As a long-time snake owner, I gotta say, this doesn't surprise me. Snakes aren't very smart.
This story also illustrates a major problem in the 'glades - there are lots of animals which don't belong there, mostly due to people releasing exotic pets. Thanks to such stupidity, the Everglades are now home to breeding populatoins of Burmese, reticulated and other large pythons; iguana; exotic scorpions; and, perhaps most scary, piranha. None of these creatures are native to the ecosystem, and all are potentially disruptive in a big way, as the local animals population didn't evolve with the presence of this many and this variety of predators.

My brother loves snakes, but I believe that over time, stupidity will kill off all of these creatures. This is a good example of how diversity is a bad thing.

Maybe I'm just getting soft in my old age, but I feel sorry for both critters. :(
