As a long-time snake owner, I gotta say, this doesn't surprise me. Snakes aren't very smart.
This story also illustrates a major problem in the 'glades - there are lots of animals which don't belong there, mostly due to people releasing exotic pets. Thanks to such stupidity, the Everglades are now home to breeding populatoins of Burmese, reticulated and other large pythons; iguana; exotic scorpions; and, perhaps most scary, piranha. None of these creatures are native to the ecosystem, and all are potentially disruptive in a big way, as the local animals population didn't evolve with the presence of this many and this variety of predators.

When will the 13-foot Burmese pythons learn? You just can't expect to eat a 6-foot alligator and live.

All of Florida is like that. It's because we're in the border between temperate and tropical zones so lots of plants and animals from either clime can survive here, if given a chance (such as one produced by habitat disruption). Plus, Miami gets lots of trade from Latin American countries so there are ample opportunities for introductions.
But the plants are worse. Sure, it's bad that we have breeding populations of cobras running around Miami's airport. Or walking catfish. Or tilapia. Or the rhesus monkeys that live up by Silver Springs, thanks to the Tarzan movies. Or all the parrots. But the plants are what can really re-shape the ecosystem because they form the base of the food pyramid. (It's a huge over-simplification, but I'm sticking with it because I don't know all the more complicated details and because it's "just" a message board post.)
For instance, the melaleuca invade the Everglades (sometimes getting planted and they suck up all the water and store it in their trunk, turning the River of Grass into just grass. Plus, they're virtually fireproof. There's about a dozen other examples of serious threats to Florida's ecosystem, including Brazilian pepper, Australian pine, hydrilla, water hyacinths, and of course, kudzu.

It's like Jurassic Park, isn't it?
And I thought college kids and gangstas turning their Rotweilers and Pitbulls loose when they've tired of them was a problem.
I almost think a pet owner should suffer the same fate as a parent who abandons a child if they turn an animal loose like this.

Or at least be glad that customs still won't let me import their intelligent Velociraptors, I suppose. (Who do you have to bribe in that organization? "Threat to the public," hmph!)

I know at least one of you had to have seen the short-lived TV show Saturday Evening Fun House when they would do the thing where you had to guess what was in the snake's stomach. It would look like the snake had eaten, say, an old woman in a rocking chair. Then, it would spit out what was inside and it would be like a bunch of rats that were in the shape of the woman in the chair.

Lucky for her, a passing velociraptor was passing by and she was able to grab it's tail. The raptor's speed was more than enough to pull her free of the quicksands clutches.
Of course, she was then gutted and eaten her alive.
Yes, it's not much of a cheer-me-up.

Don't worry if it was a real velocirapter and not a deinonychus or utahraptor then it was only about the size of a chicken and it ran away when she grabbed it's tail. Oh and it was covered in feathers.(Which almost makes theropod dinosaurs seem uncool somehow).

I got to see this months ago when it was originally published. People let all sorts of fun things loose around here. Somehow most of them manage to thrive. For example:

GAH!
I've seen photo's of a python with a muffin top from eating a whole sheep, needing to lie still and down some Pepto Bizmo for a few days while it digests the sheep properly.
But this, this is just too funny. And really kinda gross. I like the "dead 'gater seep'n gasses and turn'n snakey into a balloon' theory.
