Those who read Superman/Batman saw Darkseid get beat down phsyically by Superman.
*cough* Bullcrap *cough*
But anyways, will DC ever make Darkseid a competent force in the universe again?

This discussion has now carried across three seprate threads. Whether we like it or not, we are POST crisis. We are not pre-crisis, and are not going to be ever again. The Darkseid we see now may be but a pale shadow of his former self, but that is the Darkseid we have, thanks to the writers at DC. And I see no impending change in the future. Only time will tell.
Wait. It happened again?
I hate that Darkseid is constantly used as Superman's punching bag. First, it seems like a disservice to Darkseid's character. Second, it's happened to often that it's really, really boring... and annoying... and sucky... and many other things.
I want someone cool to take over the New Gods concepts and keep Darkseid in that book. At least there he can be a threat and an interesting villain.

Hasn't happened...yet.
I know it is coming though.
Maybe.
I'm not asking for Pre-Crisis Superman to return but please DC do not make Darkseid a Superman level fighter...

I'm used to Darkseid being extremely badass. And yet charismatic.
Hmph.

If I may be permitted to say, current Darkseid sucks. Jesus, he is bad.

I don't think I've seen him since the Ostrander guest-writer one-shot in the Hal Jordan Spectre, and he killed a kid there.
Well and there was that total fanboy moment in JLA/Avengers with him and the Infinity Quantlet, which was probably my favourite part.

Agreed.
That was awesome. I just loved thhe reaction of Hawkeye.
"He...has the Infinity Gauntlet. And he looks worse than Thanos..."

Well , Jeph Loeb is the one continually writing superman & batman as supergod and batgod and reducing everyone else to become their stepping stones , with him moving to marvel , hopefully things will return to normal and Darkseid will regain back some of his dignity.

Maybe we can bring Geoff Johns in to explain it away as some sort of Orange Suckiness Monster was controlling Dark Seid.

Even with that, somebody will need to cough up a shapeshifter character who [retcon] was posing as Darkseid in recent years, making him look bad. Kind of like how Starlin brought in clones to explain some damage done by other writers to the reputation of Thanos, or how various writers at Marvel have used DoomBots to explain away some low-end Doom showings.

I think it was implied in John Byrnes's new gods that a lot of Darkseid losses were avatars and not the true Darkseid , and that the "true" Darkseid likely cannot lose on the physical plane.

I think the Darkseid situation is part of a much larger problem involving all of the New Gods. Basically, I think there are very few writers that understand these characters, and so they write them into the standard comicbook stereotypes. Here are some exambples:
Darkseid: Darkseid is the representation of ultimate repressive order, order through total submission. He is not just another galactic conqueror.
Orion: Orion was meant to be a noble warrior who fought to contain the darker aspects of his nature. He's now written as a cosmic Wolverine, a violent uncontrollable psychopath.
Kalibak: Kalibak was the representation of pure rage and fury. Now, he's the guy people beat down on their way to fight Darkseid.
Dr. Bedlam: Dr. Bedlam is meant to be the representation of fear, who used robot hosts to house his consciousness. He's now a mad scientist with lots of robot bodies.
Mr. Miracle: While he's come off a lot better than others, Scott Free is meant to represent the human will to be free. He's more than just an escape artist.

The thing about Darkseid is he has to be used only on rare occasions. Darkseid stories have only one satisfying outcome: His plans are thwarted, and he leaves the heroes alone - for now. Anything else diminishes his image as the baddest dude there is. (Or results in him ruling the universe, but that'd be a bit of bleak ending!)

Anybody who says that Darkseid hasn't made a great appearance post-Crisis is out of his/her mind. He took over the world in Morrison's JLA. That arc was intense.
Darkseid is Doctor Doom times ten... he's only been marred by a couple bad appearances. All villains have high points and low points. He'll be back.

Rock of Ages is the exception, not the rule.
And even then he was killed by Green Arrow and Atom

It was so badass it made up for any other appearance of him as a weakling. Because I said so. ;) :D
And even then he was killed by Green Arrow and Atom
It had to end SOMEHOW.

Don't forget Barda!
Although I was fine with how they handled her in JLA pretty much. Except for the bunny slippers of course.

Maybe we'll see something cool in the pages of Morrison's Mister Miracle...
Other than that, maybe we'll get a rehash of the Great Darkness Saga, now that LSH has been rebooted again. Now THAT is the Darkseid I wanna see in the DCU.
