Cyclops and Angel (when he was Archangel) both wore/wear cowls, and Cyclops actually has resumed wearing the cowl in Astonishing. So, I was just wondering what the consensus was on cowls. Also, I was thinking about the cowl thing and though I don't like it, it works for Cyclops. B/c of the cowl it looks like he really only has one eye hence his name. I dunno...does this count as a rant?

They make absolutely no story sense, given that they are all public heroes with no civilian identities to keep secret. The only purpose they serve is that some people think they look cool and there is a certain amount of worthless tradition to them.
I think they look kinda silly.

On Angel it doesnt make much sense, but with Cyke, it kind of explains how the visor stays on. Although really, who goes into combat with their hair all flying around?

Uh, every one else...
But seriously, haven't you ever thought about how stupid it is that chicks (an long haired guys) in comics almost always have their hair out? DOesnt it get in the way?

A cowl does make more sense than that headgear thing Gambit has. It would at least prevent an opponent from hairpulling and give some minor protection (with Forge's bulletproof customes at least). Heroes tend to get lucky when it comes to headshots anyway.

Nay for cowls.
But LOVE for hoods. Hoods look great.

I like the skullcap look on Cyclops, but it fits his personality of having every little thing in control. Archangle it doesn't work quite so much on.

generally what is the difference between cowls and masks? (does DC's flash wear a cowl or a mask?is wolverine a mask wearer or a cowl bearer? )

Scott's hood/cowl is such a metaphor for foreskin. Pulled back when he's relaxing and over his head when he needs protection.

I happen to like them because they give each character an outward personality. I've grown up with characters wearing cowls and believe that they are pretty cool.
