View Full Version : Most annoying DC character?

This isn't exactly one of those characters you hate threads but more on the lines of what DC character do you find really annoying?
Wonder Girl(Cassie): Nothing personal to the Cassie fans but what I find annoying about her is her whining. If thares one thing I cant stand is characters who whine too much.

Guy Gardner just rubs me the wrong way. Arrogant, pompous, obnoxious. His greatest moment IMO was getting punched in the face by Batman. There is only room for one d*ck in the DCU and Bruce has already filled it.

I totally agree. While I don't always like Winnick's writing, I think he has enough talent to come up with a better character than Grace. And Shift, to me, is just dead weight in the DCU. Metamorpho is infinitely better as a character and a super-hero. Getting rid of Indigo was a step in the right direction, but the rest still being around annoys me.

But...but she's a woman who likes fighting and beer and sex! She's such an ingenious twist on the whole male/female stereotype thing! It's a mystery why she hasn't caught on like wildfire!
And Shift, to me, is just dead weight in the DCU.
Shift is so totally Morph from Exiles that I'm surprised Winnck doesn't sue himself for copyright infringement. :)

Depends on who's writing who the most annoying turns out to be. I'm a huge Flash-fan, but Wally West as written by Ron Marz is a pretty irritating person. Jade written by Ron Marz really gets on my nerves. Impulse by Mark Waid wasn't bad, but by Todd Dezago was annoying.
Though, for most consistantly annoying, reguardless of writer -- I have to say Hawkman. No one has ever been able to make Hawkman likeable to me. He's always just seemed to be this big macho smelly violent jerk. Now, sure, Guy Gardner is a jerk, but he's meant to be funny. Carter isn't. That's what makes him annoying, he's a jerk who is supposed to be a sympathetic character. If only writers would aprpoach him like Guy Gardner or Oliver Queen -- "Okay, we know this guy is totally tactless and won't shut up, so let's play it up and layer his humanity under than surface."
I'd rather see Kyle say "Great Guardians" in every book than have Hawkman get as much panel-time as he's getting right now.

Different strokes and all...I never really cared about Hawkman all that much UNTIL he started acting like such a hardass. I like the description of him (from Johns?) as "Conan with wings". If your one power is gonna be something as pussy as flying, you'd better have something to back it up.
That line about giving Batman "ten minutes he'll never forget" alone made me check out his back issues. :)

I like the new Outsiders a lot, but I agree that Grace is a repugnant character. I was pretty disgusted that Roy tapped that. Nasty. Dick beds Helena and Roy's shacking up with Grace, the hulking behomoth. Is there any question as to who won that particular round?
Guy Gardner just rubs me the wrong way. Arrogant, pompous, obnoxious. His greatest moment IMO was getting punched in the face by Batman. There is only room for one d*ck in the DCU and Bruce has already filled it.
I couldn't have said it better myself. Any character who is referred to as a "redneck" by his fellow heroes (Ollie used this term to describe Guy in Smith's GA run) belongs a few notches lower than everyone else on the superhero totem pole. And that single-punch KO was pretty great, wasn't it?
Hawkman is definitely a character who doesn't deserve his own hubris.

As much as I love Hawkman, Seanbaby (http://www.seanbaby.com/) put it best:
If you're a Super Friend, being able to fly is like being able to break a graham cracker along the line. It was tragic enough the only notable thing about him was his hat, but what was even worse was that he had no idea. He had no f--king idea. As far as he could tell, Hawkman was all the superhero the world needed.

There are quite a few....But I would have to say Superman. He's self-righteousness is annoying and dangerous....
I used to think that until I started reading more and more Superman comics. In most cases, he's written as a remarkably average, well-adjusted guy who just wants to do the right thing.
The whole "God among men" angle is how people look at him and not how he looks at himself.
He thinks Superman-worship is kind of embarassing and views himself as a farmboy who justs wants to help people. Also notice the fact that he's the first to caution other super-powered entities against over-extending their reach. The best example I can think of is when Kyle became Ion and Superman was the one to reel him back in and remind him that they're there to help, never to control. And, of course, there's the famous quote at the end of Grant Morrison's first JLA run.... that alone speaks more to Superman's character than just about anything else.

I actually loved Arrowette before Young Justice. Peter David actually made me grow quite annoyed with Cissie and her angst.
I also was annoyed by The Mist in Starman (stop trying to push this worthless character as Jack's archnemesis!), and Monstress in Legion. Fortuntately they're both dead.
These days, Plastic Man, Detective Chimp, and whiny Superman are on my "annoying" list.

You know, I'm with you on that, and a few months ago, I wouldn't have been. I did little but lambast him as a big Boy Scout. But I have gained something of a new admiration for him as of late. Batman is my boy, but Superman is a pleasant switch as far as personality.

I think Bizarro is the most annoying character ever created. I absolutely cannot read him. If he appears in a title I collect, I just flip through the parts with him. And for some reason, all writers claim how much they love to write him! Why? He is so irritating! Bad enough we had Bizarro, but now we have Bizarro Supergirl (thanks Peter David!) and Batzarro (Thanks Jeph Loeb). Arrgh! Get rid of them!
A close second is Krypto the Super Dog. Stupid Silver Age idea that should have stayed there.

I agree with you completely! I have never understood the reasoning behind putting him on the JLA instead of Elongated Man. Then the way they tried to force his importance down our throats by telling us how powerful he is. Big deal! Ralph is a much better fit! Plus, Plastic Man was a WWII character so he belongs more on the JSA anyway

Man, my tolerance for annoying must be a lot higher than I thought. None of the characters mentioned so far even makes my top 10 list (although Lobo comes close when he's written in his "watered-down" mode, i.e. his ongoing series).
For downright annoying, I'd have to list, in no particular order:
-- The Yazz (Yazzin DIE, you little blue weirdo)
-- Triumph (Yeah, yeah, you founded the JLA... ya know what? No one cares!)
-- Steel (The JLDetroit version...at least Vibe had personality)
-- Pariah (For the love of Oa, stop crying!)
-- Lana Lang (He's just not that into you, sweetie. Suck it up and move on)
-- Hush (I really don't care who he is or what he wants anymore. I just want him to get hit by a truck)
-- Grayven (If you look in the dictionary under "poser," you'll find a picture of this guy)
-- Jamm (You don't remember him? Good. Maybe if we're all VERY good, he'll never show up again)
-- The DEOrphans (Annoying brats that almost singlehandedly drove the previous Titans title into the grave)
-- Grunt, Nudge, and Vortex (As dubious as the decision to "reboot" the Doom Patrol was in the first place, it was made nine times worse by wasting valuable panel space on these cyphers)
What an array of nothing,
Mike.

Messed up origin > Multiple origins, lack of personality, and the best version of you, wasn't you. Oh yeah and jobbing Supes and the people you fight in your title.
Jim Lee saved Hush from being my most annoying DC character. Hush looked so cool when Jim Lee drew him! Now, I wish he can.....
1) Die. I don't care how, but die.
2) Become a cooler character. Kill Black Mask or something.
3) Go into the background and let Prometheus get the spotlight, Morrison made him cool, but everyone else Generalized him (read what Hal did to the General in JSA, and you will know what I mean!

Jade: She hasn't done anything on The Outsiders to be worthy of taking over the team.
Supergirl: They should have done her what they did Connor. Put her on a teen superteam and develope her character at a normal process. If she gets a good fanbase then give her a ongoing title. What they are doing now is stuffing the character down the fans throats and that is not a good way to go at it.

I suspect that's why he irritated a lot of us. This version of JLA isn't supposed to be midnight at the comedy club :) If I wanted real humor (instead of slapstick), I'd have read my old JLI issues. To me, he just didn't fit in with the concept of the League. Having him make wisecracks when the "big gun" JLA is in the battle for their lives came across as irritating to me. That said, I didn't mind him in his old archive stories. Just in JLA he came across as unneeded comedy relief.
After Ducklord's post, I do need to amend my list and add the DEOKids to the top of the list. Cheshire started to annoy me as well. It wasn't until Gail got her hands on her when I begant to love to hate her as a villain again. (Instead of just hating her)
