View Full Version : Who should follow Millar/ Land on Ultimate Fantastic Four?

Mark Millar & Greg Land just finished their first of 4 arcs on Ultimate Fantastic 4, and Joe Queseda made a point to mention that the next creative arc will begin their "historic" run in August, so it's an appropriate time to ask the big question- what creators would you guys like to see on the book? And what stories & characters would you like to see them handle (Millar & Land's remaining 3 arcs are "Tomb of Namor", "President Thor," and "Frightful.")
Some possibilitie creators....
Robert Kirkman- Kirkman's worked on the characters before in "Foes" and "Marvel Team Up," and he's working on Ultimate X-Men. He proved he could write teen heroes in Invincible. Sales on Foes bombed, but the man may want to make up for that.
Mike Carey- He wrote a great Thinker 2 parter between Ellis & Millar's runs, and I'd love to see a sequel to that, and just what he's capable of doing when given more than 2 issues. And I'm sure others would agree.
Alan Moore- If he's "King" this may be the big assignment Marvel got King for. With his mad genius & love of silver age Marvel (see Tom Strong & 1963), Moore would be a great match for this book, but it may not be a big enough assignment for him (on the other hand it is a best-selling book, which has had it's fair share of a-list creators in the lasdt 2 years.) I'd probably kill to see this match.
Stephen King- If he's "King" this may be his big Marvel assignment. The closest thing I can think of that he's done to this is It, but he's a versatile man, and this could be the perfect place for his weirdest ideas.
Warren Ellis- He's written the characters before in a twelve issue creative run, and he's using them again in the Ultimate Galactus saga. I'm not sure if he has any new ideas for them though, and I'd rather have Marvel hire someone who does.
Brian Michael Bendis- He cowrote the first 6 issues with Millar, and may have some ideas of his own for the book. On the other hand he's a busy man with New Avengers, Powers, The Pulse, Ultimate Spider-Man & Spiderwoman (although House of M & Secret War just ended.) I still believe there are many better picks.
Jeph Loeb- One of the most popular writers in the industry, and a recent Marvel exclusive, working on the Ultimates, and he wrote dialogue for Pacheco's Fantastic Four a while back. He's probably on the bottom of my list of possible writers.
Pascual Ferry- He's a recent Marvel exclusive, and his work on Mister Miracle was amazing. I'd love to see him as artist.
Brian Hitch- He created the character designs, so I could see him as the regular artist. He needs a lot of lead time though, so if he were the artist, I wouldn't be surprised if he was starting work on his first issue right now, which could be why a press release said that the next run will be "historic."
Alan Davis- He's one of the best artists in the industry, and this is his chance to top the sales of Uncanny X-Men. He loves the Fantastic Four, and having him be artist goes with the Ultimate idea of having new writers working with artists who have experience with the title. (Mark Bagley on Ult Spider-Man, Adam Kubert & Andy Kubert on Ultimate X-Men)
Jae Lee- He's worked on the fill-in issues, and the recent annual, so he could easily be bumped up to regular penciller.
And the stories I'd like to see...
The Return of Doctor Doom
This is a no-brainer. Doctor Doom's considered the greatest villain in the Marvel Universe, and the Ultimate version has not lived up to it. I want to see a big arc where he becomes really dangerous.
The Black Panther-
I for one think it's about damn time the Ultimate Black Panther was introduced. This version could be a teenager avenging his murdered father (to keep with the theme of featuring younger versions of the old characters.)
Whatever the hell the creators want-
For all I know Mike Carey has a Return of the Mole Man arc better than anything I could ever do with Ult Dr. Doom. I'd want the creators to tell the stories they want to tell.

Not real familiar with him, but seems pretty accomplished. I could handle this.
Mike Carey- He wrote a great Thinker 2 parter between Ellis & Millar's runs, and I'd love to see a sequel to that, and just what he's capable of doing when given more than 2 issues. And I'm sure others would agree.
Here, here! I would totally endorse this. 'Think Tank' was a great little arc, with some real creative re-imaginings. Exactly why the 'clean slate' of the Ultimate Universe exists!
Alan Moore- If he's "King" this may be the big assignment Marvel got King for. With his mad genius & love of silver age Marvel (see Tom Strong & 1963), Moore would be a great match for this book, but it may not be a big enough assignment for him (on the other hand it is a best-selling book, which has had it's fair share of a-list creators in the last 2 years.) I don't see this happening, not that I wouldn't want to. ;)
Stephen King- If he's "King" this may be his big Marvel assignment. The closest thing I can think of that he's done to this is It, but he's a versatile man, and this could be the perfect place for his weirdest ideas.
No idea what King can do in a comic book format. Could be brilliant, could be brutal, or somewhere in between.
Warren Ellis- He's written the characters before in a twelve issue creative run, and he's using them again in the Ultimate Galactus saga. I'm not sure if he has any new ideas for them though, and I'd rather have Marvel hire someone who does.
This guy wrote the Doom and Annihlus stories (the weakest in the run so far). Annihlus was a little better story of the two. If he comes back, he needs to atone for Doom who was pretty ridiculous for someone who's supposed to be one of the pre-eminent villains, and Reed's nemesis. Not to say he can't, but the initial Ultimate Doom story was pretty weak, and doesn't instill a lot of confidence.
I have no problems with Bendis, as long as he can do it. I'd say this is a longshot, given how much he has on his plate.
Jeph Loeb- One of the most popular writers in the industry, and a recent Marvel exclusive, working on the Ultimates, and he wrote dialogue for Pacheco's Fantastic Four a while back. He's probably on the bottom of my list of possible writers.
I want to see what he does with Ultimates before he's writing other things I read. Maybe after that, I'll be clamoring for him. But not part of the next UFF creative team, too early for me.
Pascual Ferry- He's a recent Marvel exclusive, and his work on Mister Miracle was amazing. I'd love to see him as artist.
- No opinion, I wouldn't pretend to know anything about him.
Brian Hitch- He created the character designs, so I could see him as the regular artist. He needs a lot of lead time though, so if he were the artist, I wouldn't be surprised if he was starting work on his first issue right now, which could be why a press release said that the next run will be "historic."
Hell Yeah! Love his work. Actually bummed to see Land moving on, though. :(
Alan Davis- He's one of the best artists in the industry, and this is his chance to top the sales of Uncanny X-Men. He loves the Fantastic Four, and having him be artist goes with the Ultimate idea of having new writers working with artists who have experience with the title. (Mark Bagley on Ult Spider-Man, Adam Kubert & Andy Kubert on Ultimate X-Men)
Can't go wrong with this. Is this even likely?
Jae Lee- He's worked on the fill-in issues, and the recent annual, so he could easily be bumped up to regular penciller.
In small doses, yes. I really would prefer if he were not the regular penciller, however.
And the stories I'd like to see...
The Return of Doctor Doom
This is a no-brainer. Doctor Doom's considered the greatest villain in the Marvel Universe, and the Ultimate version has not lived up to it. I want to see a big arc where he becomes really dangerous.
An absolute must. We need to have Doom elevated from horse-hooved, bazooka-wielding, self-proclaimed monarch who lives in a hippie commune to a true threat to all members of the Ulimate Universe.
The Black Panther-
I for one think it's about damn time the Ultimate Black Panther was introduced. This version could be a teenager avenging his murdered father (to keep with the theme of featuring younger versions of the old characters.)
Black Panther doesn't do that much for me, though I wasn't a huge Mad-Thinker fanatic before the 'ultimization'. Given his history with the 'regular' FF, I can see the logic in doing a story with him... especially if it brings us Ultimate Klaw!
Whatever the hell the creators want-
For all I know Mike Carey has a Return of the Mole Man arc better than anything I could ever do with Ult Dr. Doom. I'd want the creators to tell the stories they want to tell.
Yeah, my two favorite arcs so far are 'Crossover' and 'Think Tank'. Both seemed to come out of left-field, yet really impressed. Ultimate Frightful Four could be really good. I'm gonna miss this team no matter who they bring in... :(

Already writing Ultimate X-men, lets see what he can do their before talking about him coming over here.
Mike Carey- He wrote a great Thinker 2 parter between Ellis & Millar's runs, and I'd love to see a sequel to that, and just what he's capable of doing when given more than 2 issues. And I'm sure others would agree.
Not a bad choice, but I doubt Marvel will ask him.
Alan Moore- If he's "King" this may be the big assignment Marvel got King for. With his mad genius & love of silver age Marvel (see Tom Strong & 1963), Moore would be a great match for this book, but it may not be a big enough assignment for him (on the other hand it is a best-selling book, which has had it's fair share of a-list creators in the lasdt 2 years.) Dear God, if Marvel got him I would crap myself :D, but Moore coming to Marvel is highly doubtful.
Stephen King- If he's "King" this may be his big Marvel assignment. The closest thing I can think of that he's done to this is It, but he's a versatile man, and this could be the perfect place for his weirdest ideas.
No, I mean yes this is King but he has never writen a big comic story that I know of and I only see him doing like 6 issues, the next writer should be on here for at least 3 years, something King would never do.
Warren Ellis- He's written the characters before in a twelve issue creative run, and he's using them again in the Ultimate Galactus saga. I'm not sure if he has any new ideas for them though, and I'd rather have Marvel hire someone who does.
Oh God I hope not. I really hated his first 12 issues, kept him as far away from this book as possible.
Again no, every stroy would be a 6 issue story arc like his first one was. Plus he is already writing 6 other books, I don't think he could make more time to do this.
Jeph Loeb- One of the most popular writers in the industry, and a recent Marvel exclusive, working on the Ultimates, and he wrote dialogue for Pacheco's Fantastic Four a while back. He's probably on the bottom of my list of possible writers.
I think he could do a good job at writing UFF since their hasn't been a huge run yet,(lets wait and see Millar's whole run is like before saying anything)so he could come in and do some changes that I can't see that would bother anyone, I mean this isn't the Ultimates were talking about here.
Pascual Ferry- He's a recent Marvel exclusive, and his work on Mister Miracle was amazing. I'd love to see him as artist.
Don't know who he is.
Brian Hitch- He created the character designs, so I could see him as the regular artist. He needs a lot of lead time though, so if he were the artist, I wouldn't be surprised if he was starting work on his first issue right now, which could be why a press release said that the next run will be "historic."
I would love to see him as the artist but I would also love the comic to come out every month like it has been rather then waiting 2 years for his first run to end. So no.
Alan Davis- He's one of the best artists in the industry, and this is his chance to top the sales of Uncanny X-Men. He loves the Fantastic Four, and having him be artist goes with the Ultimate idea of having new writers working with artists who have experience with the title. (Mark Bagley on Ult Spider-Man, Adam Kubert & Andy Kubert on Ultimate X-Men)
I havn't like any of Davis's work lately, and he is already doing Fantastic Four: The End, so I don't see him doing this.
Jae Lee- He's worked on the fill-in issues, and the recent annual, so he could easily be bumped up to regular penciller.
I hate Jae Lee's art, so I say no.

I'd say some new possible writers for the book are Allen Heinberg, Greg Pak, Sean McKeever, and Brian K Vaughn based on statements made by Queseda.
"The 10 Terrific" are Joss Whedon ("Astonishing X-Men"), Reginald Hudlin ("Marvel Knights Spider-Man," "Black Panther"), Allen Heinberg ("Young Avengers"), Dan Slott ("She-Hulk"), Roberto Sacasa ("Marvel Knights 4"), Greg Pak ("Warlock," "Iron Man: House of M," "Marvel 1602: The New World"), Daniel Way ("Venom," "Bullseye: Greatest Hits"), David Hine ("NYX," "Mutopia X"), Sean McKeever ("Sentinel," "Mary Jane," "Gravity"), and Robert Kirkman ("Marvel Team-Up," "Fantastic Four: Foes"). "These guys are going to be getting a super boost from Marvel," Quesada said. "Each [writer] will be getting a regular series or a major mini-series that will hopefully push them to that next level."
When asked about Vaughan's "The Hood" and the possibilities for a sequel, Quesada said that they would love to do a sequel, but that Vaughan's current schedule would not allow it. Quesada also said "five or six different projects" are being discussed for Vaughan in the Ultimate Universe after he finishes his run on "Ultimate X-Men." For more Ultimate plans, check our CBR's interview with Joe Quesada.
For those who don't know who Pascual Ferry is, I recommend leafing through Seven Soldiers: Mister Miracle #1.

It would be great if The Ultimates become a more traditional fun super-hero action book with Loeb and Joe Mad that Ultimate FF takes the opposite road and goes more dark sci-fi, a sort-of mix between Warren Ellis`Planetary and Marvel`s golden age anthology books such as "Tales of Mystery". And hire someone like James "Golden Age/Starman" Robinson to accomplish it.

We can take Steven King off any list of possible writers. As for the others.
Rober Kirkman's Marvel Zombies is a spinoff of Ult F4, so that may make him slightly more likely to take it as a fourth monthly book (in addition to Invincible, Walking Dead, Marvel Team Up, and assorted mini series.)
Some names I'm surprised I forgot. I wouldn't mind either of these writers.
Brian K Vaughan- Wrote teenagers really well in Ultimate X-Men & Runaways. Ultimate X-Men just ended, so he is free to write one more book (if he maintains his old schedule.
Peter David- He's written teens before (Young Justice, Spyboy, etc), has an excellent blend of scifi & humor, and he's doing some of the best work of his career with Fallen Angel, in addition to best-sellers like Friendly Neightborhood Spider-Man, and X-Factor.
I can't think of any other artists who'd be amazing on the book, though.
I think Peter David has enough books to keep him busy for now. I would love to see BKV on Ultimate Fantastic Four though.
