So Sci-fi is showing Dungeons and Dragons 2. Is it just me, or does it actually look far better than that crappy Dungeons & Dragon movie there was?
I agree, it does look much better than the crap movie they had.
Of course what came out of my butt this morning was better than that Dungeons and Dragons movie.

Why did it get a sequel anyway? I thought D & D was a box office flop.
They should just revamp it (ala Batman Begins) and use a cast and crew that can execute the concept and respect it.

I didn't even know there was a sequel... October 8, huh? I think I might give it a glance.
Did they take a page from Jackson's trilogy? I picked up Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone yesterday for about the price of a DVD movie, and I was surprised t at how much it looked (and sounded) like the LoTR trilogy films... I mean, I know that the company that made it also made the Two Towers movie adaptation game, but damn.
At the same time, I think it was the way to go, really, because the Jackson trilogy has more of the flavor of good D&D then that godawful abomination of a movie Dungeons & Dragons ever did. I mean, it's got orcs and goblins and ogres (cave trolls, whatever) and elves and dwarves and epic battles and thrilling skirmishes and beautiful cities and smoky taverns and dark dungeons and sort-of dragons, and ALL the other stuff that a good, traditional D&D adventure ought to have! LoTR was the D&D movie all the gamers wanted, which isn't surprising when you consider D&D's origins.
And this Xbox game I got, Demon Stone, while sadly shallow and relatively easy, is without a doubt got some gorgeous art direction. Which is pretty much what I bought it for. If the first D&D movie had looked like this, then perhaps it would have only half-sucked (because let's face it, the story would have still reeeeeeeked).

Oh I was surprised at how much the movie sucked the second time I saw it. I actually liked it the first time, which makes me think somehow I must've gotten drugged without my knowledge.
But I've known there's been a sequel in the making for a while. I think that it's a different studio and script-writers is why the sequel actually looks good.

Isn't Paris Hilton in the sequel? Sure I heard that somewhere.

You know, me too! I saw it in the theater and really dug it...bought the score and everything (the scrore is actually pretty good, actually). Then I see it a second time when it comes on DVD and go...what the heck is this? It was the exact same movie, but it just made less sense and just sucked the second time I saw it. I can't explain it; nothing like that has ever happened before. I'm tempted to see it a third time to see what will happen.
But I've known there's been a sequel in the making for a while. I think that it's a different studio and script-writers is why the sequel actually looks good.
I've known about the sequel since last year myself. What's odd about it is that NONE of the cast is returning...except the dude who played Damodar. I'm curious to see how they'll explain away his death by impaling and then falling. Now THAT scene, to me, still holds up. I thought it was hilarious. Ridley just runs with him over to the edge and tosses him over.

Ive been reading up on this, and alot of the people on IMDB page and other sites say that this one fixed alot of the problems in the first one, and this is much better.
I liked the Earthsea movie, so I actually am holding out some hope for this one.

Well, I saw it last night. And you know what? I thought it was pretty good.
The villains were evil and competent. The heroes were done pretty well. Lots of references to the game, and lots of scenes that seem to have been inspired by common situations in the game. (IE, the goblin hut) And for a change, the supporting cast seemed to actually have something to do, and the scenes with them didnt seem tacked on.
The movie also kept on the move, which is pretty refreshing. They got to the story and stuck to it. There was some awkward dialogue, I thought the subplot thingie about the fighter chick's brother was kinda tacked on (though I did like the reference to Barrier Peaks...a sequal perhaps?),and where the hell did that lich come from(?). but for the most part thety fixed everything that was wrong with the first one.
I also gotta add that they just accepted whatever conventions they had. No self referential dialogue. It also had a good but of people die. It was wrenching, and you could tell that the good guys lost a lot to win. I found both things refreshing.
All in all, I have to recommend this movie, and I hated the first one with a passion.
(Oh, yeah, and I liked how the cleirc died. Failed his will save. Tsk, tsk, tsk. :D )

I liked it. My wife compared it to the better grade-B fantasy films of the 80's, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. I wasn't actively wishing for the death of our heroes (unlike the 1st film), the bad guys were believably threatening, and the humor, when it showed up ("Good times.") was effective without being forced.
If this film had been the theatrical release, instead of the 1st one, the idea of a D&D film wouldn't be a joke these days.

Well, I saw it last night.
Okay, HOW did you see it? All the sites I checked after I read your post said its not coming out till November 8th.
Anywho, I had a feeling it would be better. Any chance the lich is Damodar? Would make sense.

The hell are YOU talking about? The thing premiered last night.
Are you in the USA? Or are the sites youve seen talking about the DVD release?
Make no mistake. It was on last night. Theyll be rerunning it Thursday at nine.
PS: Naw, the lich and Damodar werent the same guy. The Lich did help him though....and then betrayed him. And boy, when he did, that was a great moment, sir.

I sure am. I also don't have cable, so I'm assuming it premiered on some cable channel. Sci-Fi?

The DVD release. I thought it would be straight to video, but I didn't know they'd do it like Species 3 and Beyond Re-Animator and show them on cable first.

I thought part 4 was supposed to be theatrical? Or at least limited release?
I think the plot for part 4 sounds kinda cool (probably cause its a ripoff of Resident Evil, but still), but the plot for part 5...ugh. I'll still watch both when they come out. Man I wish I had cable.

Yeah, the second one sounds lame. The title speaks for itself: Rave to the Grave. lol

Or failed a saving throw...
I'll have to rent the second one when its released, its probably better than the first, which set the bar very low. I wished they'd done an anthology movie a la Heavy Metal.

I thought it was pretty good, better than the first which I paid money to see. Some really good character moments, although I thought the elven mage wasn't really fleshed out. I liked the rogue, especially the scene with the lever, I've ran with rogues like that.
All in all, a fun experience.

The CG may have sucked but the storyline was faaaaaaaaar better than the 1st movie.
Now, if only they used halflings, dwarves, and half-orcs in the group.

Well, I'll take your word for it, since you saw both films.
But at least it beats all these creature Sci-Fi originals they keep showing. Ugh.

You'll never want to see the original, trust me. I agree, Sci-Fi tends to produce crappy movies *cough Mansquito! cough*!

This was very well done. Not LOTR quality, but decent. If only they did a DTV/dvd series of these things. I'd love to see how they'd handle Drizzt.

Theyre talking about this on the WOTC boards. Somebody suggested that perhaps they could do movies based on various campaign worlds.
Dark Sun, Forgotten Realms, Ravenloft even.
Sounds good to me.

Like with the Baldur's Gate Games, I think Drizzt and Company would work out great in animated format.

Okay, I watched this... Okay, I watched a bit of it while I played World of Warcraft.
And what I saw... was not bad. Not good, but not bad.
More like, the first one was based on a bad gaming campaign, and this was based on an average gaming campaign.
Still, if they made a third one that was as much better than this as this was over the first, it would pretty good.

Ach, I feel betrayed by this thread.
'Cause that was awful. I mean, really, really awful. The dragons were okay, but the movie... *gah*.
I didn't expect a lot, but I hoped for better than that.

Oh come on, for a Sci-fi original it wasn't that bad. Heck of a lot better than the first one.
