What role has Canada ever played in the DC Universe? Are there any Canadian Superheroes? Have any stories taken place here?

Canada doesn't exist in DC. Darkseid Omega Effected it because it annoyed him.
Seriously, no clue. I dont think I've ever even heard it mentioned in the DCU.

My guess is that its cold... really, really frickin' cold.
And, strangely enough, there's not a single secret government cabal creating any super soldiers. Which is strange, 'cause that's all us Canadians are good at. Well, that and freezing our butts off.

Its not just Canada though. Other than Russia, do any of the other "real world" countries have heroes? Do they even get mentioned?
Japan in MU can actually field a team of heroes, as can China, the UK and Russia. Hell, I'm pretty sure that marvel Canada could solo the rest of the "real world" DC without too much trouble.
The only major Canadian I can think of in DC is Plastique (and she was a villain who had no powers....)

The real reason that the DCU is able to have so many extra major American cities is that there is no Canada. ;)

Canada is really never mentioned in DC which I think is a shame. As far as I know, there are only a handful of Canadian charachters:
Plastique (stereotypical French Canadian Terrorist)
Centrix (from Global Guardians, but has only appeared in one panel in one issue of Justice League Quarterly)
Flying Fox (Stereotypical Native Canadian who was a member of the Young All Stars)
Corona and Koryak (stereotypical Inuit characters. Corona once slept with Aquaman and gave birth to Koryak. Corona became a fire elemental and Koryak led a rebellion against Arthur in Atlantis) - and heck these two might be from Alaska as a matter of fact
We get no respect! Though it is true that in DC pretty much only the US and Russia have a large representation of heroes, other countries do get more respect than Canada. Japan has 4 heroes (Dr. Light, Rising Sun, Sunburst and Bushido), The Middle East as an area has the Jihad and various solo heroes, South America has a few, heck even Australia has the Tasmanian Devil!
I much prefer the Marvel view of Canada. We may be run by an evil government (Weapon X etc.), but at least we can kick ass when we want to with Alpha Flight and we boast arguably Marvel's most popular character in Wolverine. Go Marvel! Boo DC!

One of those giant Star Conqueror starfish attacked Canada during Grant Morrison's JLA run.
So while the DCU gives us little love, at least we're worth being destroyed by giant alien starfish.
The reason Canada isn't mentioned is that it's the 52nd state and isn't considered to be seperate from the United States, Just like in real life! :D

It's odd how the Marvel Universe has more of an international feel to it, but the vast majority of Marvel heroes are operating either in upstate New York or New York City. DC Heroes are more spread out across the U.S., but DC has fewer foreign characters.
Canada in the DCU is just like Canada in the real world. Nobody other than Canadians think about it.

There are a lot of DCU heroes who could be Canadian, we just don't know enough about them...being from Canada is probably like being from Detroit. It probably won't come up in every day conversation.

Yeah, well at least when the rest of the world thinks of us they actually like us. I'd rather that than hated globally. When I was travelling in Europe, people would assume we were American and be really rude. Then when they found out we were Canadian they were truly nice, and apologized to us for the insult of assuming we were American.

One could argue the reverse is also true, just like in real life, in the DCU Americans only think about America :p
I know Robin was in Canada during "Contagion" (Toronto or Montreal, I think) but I don't know of any Canadian heros off hand (Other then Superman, who of course originally worked for a newspaper in Toronto...)

Was he ever REALLY adopted?
He would have been put in control of the State of Kansas until Johnathan and Martha were checked out and enough time had passed for his real parents to claim him. And it can take YEARS for an adoption o become final. I just read Superman Blue and John makes a comment about finding the baby and Martha insisting the keep him... nothing about an adoption. I don't ever recall hearing an adoption happened.

Um, Themscyira, Mars and Atlantis don't actually support life IRL (hell, 1 doesn't exist and the other is just a legend) so using characters from those 3 places isn't DC being "International"
I am surprised that Japan actually has 4 in DC. But Light is now powerless (and she had moved tot he States) meaning DC japan is now down to 3. Marvel's Japan's BIG HERO SIX or China's CHINA FORCE would easily mop up DC japan now.
The one thing DC International might have better is the Middle East heroes since other than Sabra and the Arabian Knight, the middle east in marvel doesn't have any other characters I know of.
Hell, marvel Canada actually only needs 1 character to beat"rest of the world" in DC. GRAVITON. Same goes for marvel Earth's UK. PROTEUS.

In older versions of the origin, Jonathan and Marth DID turn him over to the State. Even as a child, his powers were manifest, and aside from the doctor breaking many needles trying to vaccinate him, he generally busted up the place, so when the Kents came back for little Kal-el, the orpahange was only too happy to turn him over.
In Smallville the specifics of his adoption have been delved into in depth.

He probably has a birth certificate, social security number and all the requirements of American Citizen. Whether or not he was born here or not (Is the "birthing matrix" still in continuity) he spent most of his life in America.

Half of Vertigo takes place in the U.K. if not more, and you get the Knight and Squire, so you have no right to complain.
Now South America, other than Montevideo blowing up and good ole Swampy visiting Brazil, never shows up.

The UK also has John Constantine. Not exacltly a "hero", but the star od a long-running and popular DC title. Plus the new Knight, Squire and Jack O"Lantern that Grant Morrison created in JLA Classified #'s 1-3as part of the Ulta_marien Corps. They're pretty interesting.

Well, even in the real world, it seems like South America isn't a player on the world scene. So I'd say that's consistent. If we're talking about representation, they have at least one B-List heroine in Fire. Martian Manhunter was said to have made South America one of his main bases of operation during his series as well.

In the Byrne version, Clark wasn't adopted at all. Jonathan and Martha found the rocket, and baby Kal, right before a very long and harsh winter. When springtime rolled around, they produced a baby and claimed that he was their own flesh-and-blood son, born during the winter. All the normal birth documentation would have followed accordingly.

The current Dr. Fate (Hector Hall) is, technically, Canadian. He was (re)born in a Vancouver, BC hospital of a mother (who turned out to be Dawn Granger aka Dove) found floating off Vancouver Island. See JSA #2-4 (collected in the TPB "JSA: Justice Be Done).

Europe =/= the rest of the world. Americans stopped caring about what Europeans think a long time ago, which is why they're so pissed at us, but we still don't care.
Also they probably just felt sorry for you when they found out you were Canadian, at least America is a real country.

The Ultramarines, last seen as far as I know in Morrison's Justice League: Declassified arc, seemed to have a pretty international feel. Besides the already-mentioned Knight and Squire, they boasted Vixen, Olympian (appeared Greek), a kinda British-sounding Jack-o-Lantern themed guy, and a little Japanese-speaking girl capable of manifesting a big metal sumo fellow, among other members.
