I know that this has been done plenty of times with Essentials, but I don't think we've tried this with these new books.

Here is my Top 10 List (at least for today):

Johnny Thunder (Western)
Johnny Quick (especially Mort Meskin stories)
Vigilante (Meskin again)
Unknown Soldier
Scalphunter - I've only read a few, but it's always intrigued me
Sugar & Spike
Kamandi - I'm not likely to shell out for Archives
Star Hawkins from Strange Adventures
Nighthawk (western character )
Wildcat (Sensation Comics back-ups)

There are some big name exclusions, but either I've got most of the actual back issues, or I'd be willing to shell out for Archives.

I most want all 67 issues and 3 annuals of The All-Star Squadron, complete in 3 or 4 handy volumes. :)

And then Firestorm and The Fury of Firestorm.

And Blue Devil.

many if not most of these are already available as archives, but i can't afford those suckers, so my wish-list goes something like this, at least for starters --

tomahawk
metal men
doom patrol
lois lane
jimmy olsen
challengers of the unknown
phantom stranger
the legion
star-spangled war stories "war that time forgot" issues
dial h for hero
elongated man
enemy ace
sgt rock
deadman
aquaman
the haunted tank
brave & the bold
batman (silver age)
superboy

as i remember noting back when the subject first came up during the summer, it'll be interesting to see how many (if any) of the above materialize before marvel gets around to issuing essentials of, say, sgt fury or the submariner ...

I can't afford 'em either. So I really, really hope DC doesn't let the Archives influence what does and doesn't get published in Showcase Presents. :(

Since I'd at least consider picking up the other stuff already mentioned:

The Spirit (They're doing an inexpensive best of collection to conicide with Cooke's relaunch, and I have been bipassing "the Archives are too expensive" problem by buying old Kitchen Sink and Warren reprints on E-Bay, but still, I'd love to have some thick, inexpensive Spirit collections)
Shazam!
Plastic Man
The Demon
Green Arrow
The Demon
Warlord
Adam Strange
The Spectre
Wonder Woman (Despite its inevitability; the early WW stories are the kind of thing I'd been interested in reading at $9.99 but would never pay archive prices to pick up)
Zatanna- Although I'm not sure if there's enough material for one of these...
Black Canary- Or one of these.
Teen Titans
The Atom
House of Mystery- I recently picked up an annual sized special that was published under the Vertigo banner that features a bunch of reprints of these stories. It was a fun read, and if nothing else, the lineup of artists featured in that collection sells itself (Neal Adams, Wally Wood, Gil Kane, and Bernie Wrightson, among others)

dan bailey

excellent choices, brad. not mentioning the teen titans & the atom (&, while i'm at it, hawkman) was purely an oversight on my part.

i believe i read on another forum this afternoon that amazon lists green arrow as due out in january.

no doubt it'll come down to sales. the gl stories have already appeared in archives, i gather, & apparently the silver age superman stories started appearing last year in some deluxe (but non-archives) format ...

I think that the current groundrules are that Showcase Presents will be drawn from material no earlier than the first Superman volume that was just published, so I'll only look forward to stuff from the mid-50's onward for now.
I'm hoping for the following, all of which I think have a decent shot at getting published:

Diana Prince, Wonder Woman
Phantom Stranger
The Losers
Sgt. Rock
House of Mystery

Warlord
Supergirl
Rip Hunter
Doom Patrol
Elongated Man

And although it's very unlikely, I'd love to see a Showcase of one of the romance comics, especially one that featured a continuing "soap opera." The "real world" settings make these great time capsules, and they featured art by some of the real greats of the industry:Romita, Colan, Pike, Cardy...

The Wayner
09-29-2005, 05:46 PM
Green Arrow
Supergirl
House Of Mystery
The Unknown Soldier
Warlord
Sgt. Rock

And I'm sure there are plenty of others I'm forgetting...

I'd also like to see Firestorm get his due, even though I just bought the whole darned run over the summer!

Hmmm...

That stinks. Does anyone know if it's because they don't think the earlier stuff won't sell? Or is it because either there is a technical problem with reprinting some of that material?

I doubt they have everything pre-1955 targeted for Archives, although a Johnny Thunder Archives would be sweet.

I assume it would be far too costly to prepare the materials for Golden Age Showcases. They could loot the already-published Archives, but there are only 4 Golden Age Archives lines (that I can think of) that have run long enough to fill even one Showcase volume: Superman (across 3 lines: Superman, "... in Action", and "...in World's Finest"), Batman (also across 3 lines: Batman, Dark Knight, and "...in World's Finest"), Wonder Woman, and All-Star. Of those, Superman and Batman already have low-cost full-color TPB Archive-derived series initiated (the Chronicles line), and Wonder Woman is a good bet for an eventual Chronicles series. All-Star might someday be in line for a full-color TPB collection, but not until the Archives have aged, I'd guess.

In no particular order...

Superboy
Legion of Super-Heroes
Freedom Fighters
Secret Society of Super-Villains
the World's Finest issues as a Superman version of Brave and the Bold
Diana Prince -- Wonder Woman
Inferior Five
Metal Men
Hawkman and Atom
Aquaman

Sir Tim Drake

1. Sugar & Spike
2. Justice League
3. Sugar & Spike
4. Flash
5. Sugar & Spike

...

Ryan K

Legion of Superheroes
Teen Titans
Superboy
Lois Lane
Supergirl
Jimmy Olsen
Doom Patrol
Wonder Woman
Flash
Batman
Green Arrow
Aquaman
Justice Society
Hawkman
Atom
World's Finest
Brave and the Bold
Elongated Man
Spirit
Adam Strange
Plastic Man
Shazam
Sgt. Rock

And those are just the ones I'd be REALLY excited for. I'd buy pretty much anything else anybopdy has listed or can think of.

apparently the silver age superman stories started appearing last year in some deluxe (but non-archives) format ...
The Superman: Man of Tomorrow archives (only one volume so far) started the archive treatment for silver age Superman.

I'd definitely pick up Showcase Presents Metal Men. I've picked several issue from the short-lived bronze age revival, but the lack of reprints has kept me from reading any silver age Metal Men.

I'm unlikely to pass up any of these that DC feels like putting out. Thus far the only Essentials that haven't made my list are X-Factor and the Official Handbook.

But...ones I'd really like to see (within the parameters DC has set out).

Sugar & Spike
Metal Men
Phantom Stranger
Challengers of the Unknown
Doom Patrol
Rip Hunter
Kamandi
Adam Strange
Any War or Western

Top of the List for me would be The Demon. While I have one complete set and several doubles of the early issues, I would like to procure sets for my sons and back issue of this series are near impossible to find, and when availible via eBay, the prices go sky-high rapidly.

But the series itself is a solid example of Kirby's character development skills, building a solid cast with complex motivations and emotions, placed in the fantastical environments of Jack's wonderful imagination.

Kamandi would also be wonderful to see collected in mass this way.

Number two would be the wonderfully eccentric Fox and Crow, followed very closely by Sugar and Spike. I think these series have the potential to be runaway bestsellers with lots of soccer mom appeal.

Number three on the runway would be almost any 1950s early 1960s second teir characters like Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter, Elongated-man, and Challengers. I don't have much representation from this timeframe, and I would like to see more of DC comic heroes as they were presented before the Marvel Super-Heroes took hold.

I also wouldn't mind a Showcase of the Showcase and the Brave and Bold runs. The variety of characters and concepts collected into one package would be refreshing and fascination. I'm hesitant to use the term anthology, since everyone seems to think that is a doomed format, but maybe in this jumbo packaging it would be seen as a positive. I think it would be fantastic and probably a sleeper hit.

And to continue that line of thinking, a set of artist's based issues similar to the Carmine Infantino and Joe Kubert issues of DC Special would be wonderful. I'd especially like to see Mort Meskin and Gil Kane samplings (non-GL please) from the 40s to the 60s. More of Carmine and Joe would also be cool.

following up on my earlier post about a green arrow showcase presents scheduled for january, newsarama lists it as follows --

SHOWCASE PRESENTS: GREEN ARROW VOL. 1 TP
Writers: Jack Miller, France Herron, Gardner Fox, Bob Haney, Dave Wood, Dick Wood, Robert Bernstein, and John Broome
Artists: Jack Kirby, George Papp, Mike Sekowsky, Neal Adams, Lee Elias, Bernard Sachs, George Roussos and Jerry Ordway
Collects stories from ADVENTURE COMICS #250-269, WORLD ' S FINEST COMICS #95-134, 136, 138 and 140, JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #4 and THE BRAVE & THE BOLD #50, 71 and 85
528 pages, $16.99 US, black & white

sounds extremely cool, needless to say.

in the meantime, though i haven't noticed anyone mentioning it, the metamorpho volume did come out last week as scheduled. it's in my possession even as i type, though i haven't had a chance to dip into it yet. as best i can remember, i never read a single page featuring metamorpho back when i was a kid, so i'm gonna be very happy to remedy that criminal oversight.

newsarama lists another showcase presents as well, reprinting house of mystery 174-194 -- the 21 "horror" issues that followed the dial h for hero run. that's all well & good, as those 21 ishes pretty much coincide with my own readership of the title & if memory serves feature some really nice work by adams, wrightson & others, but i'm still holding out hope for a dial h for hero collection, too. oh, well ...

Durn DC for not doing Golden Age stuff in the showcase format... (yet... fingers crossed).
Here's my wishlist:

That picture probably came from the illustrated edition of Frankenstein. Wrightson did several intricate pieces for that, and Stephen King wrote an entertaining introduction.

Blowing some dust of a thread that's always fun to return to, here's what I hope to see in Showcase Presents... format some day:

Suicide Squad (I know, it's scheduled for 2008 now, but after it got pushed back a year I'll believe it when I see it.)
Firestorm
Captain Atom, although I'll likely just pick these up myself as back issues for a similar price.
The Spectre, although I doubt they'd do a Showcase for the Golden Age stories already available in the Archive.

I'd also like to see some of their bronze age and later sf series -- Electric Warrior, Camelot 3000, Atari Force, etc.

dan bailey
09-28-2007, 07:26 PM
Neat idea, Jamie. I was intrigued to see that from what I posted 2 years ago (back when I was *choke* still in all-lowercase mode), DC eventually published a sizable portion of titles from my own list --

tomahawk
metal men
doom patrol
lois lane
jimmy olsen
challengers of the unknown
phantom stranger
the legion
star-spangled war stories "war that time forgot" issues
dial h for hero
elongated man
enemy ace
sgt rock
deadman
aquaman
the haunted tank
brave & the bold
batman (silver age)
superboy

-- omitting only Tomahawk, Doom Patrol, Dial H (which would have to extend into the '80s to include the 2nd-incarnation backups in Adventure to achieve phonebook-length, so probably won't happen anyway), Enemy Ace, Deadman, Sgt Rock & Superboy (unfortunately unavoidable in the last instance, I guess, given the legal case). To those I've also added, at various times, various non-superhero strips like Sea Devils & Captain Storm & 3rd-tier strips like "Mark Merlin" & "Captain Comet" & the like, but all in all I'm awfully pleased with DC's efforts in this regard ...

... especially when I contemplate my following observation from the same post --

as i remember noting back when the subject first came up during the summer, it'll be interesting to see how many (if any) of the above materialize before marvel gets around to issuing essentials of, say, sgt fury or the submariner ...

Rex, the Wonder Dog/Detective Chimp.

Oh my gosh, another Rex fan. Now there are five of us. I've been bugging D.C. for a Rex archive for years. (I've only bought 3-4 D.C. Archives EVER, but I'd buy that one in a heartbeat.) And yes, I'd buy the Essential Rex, too, but I'd actually rather shell out the cash for the HC.

My DREAM Essential? Essential Canceled Comics Cavalcade.

prince hal
09-30-2007, 11:14 AM
I second Kan-Man and raise him a B&B non-teamups edition. Like the suggested Rex and Detective Chimp collections, they are from that treasure trove of DC's "Atomic Age" that has only been reprinted sporadically.

It was a time of anthology titles that contained many gems, like Kubert's Viking Prince. Many VP's were reprinted in various titles in the 70's, granted, but one attraction of the Showcase editions is that everything's in one spot.
It would be great to see all the Russ Heath Golden Gladiators, Novick's Silent Knight and any and all of the Robin Hood stories from both B&B and Robin Hood Tales.

And if only they could do a couple of Western collections: Tomahawk, Frontier Fighters, Daniel Boone, Western Comics, All-Star Western, etc. What art: Kubert, Kane, Infantino, Ray, Cardy, Moriera. Tighly plotted storoes, fun characters.

The same can be said of the many mystery stories that ran in Big Town, Mr. District Attorney, Gangbusters, and as backups in Detective.

Finish it off with the SF and adventure titles liek Mystery in Space and My Greatest Adventure and a lot of us old folks would be in pig heaven.

Oh, and another SP begging to be issued is Sugar and Spike.

.

MWGallaher
09-30-2007, 07:10 PM
Hal, while I'd love to see Sugar & Spike in a Showcase, DC would be idiots to put it out that way...but then, DC have proven to be idiots in failing to reprint S&S in the obvious, economically advantageous format: childrens' books! Any two issues of S&S would easily comprise a book that would sell in the childrens' book department for $10 or more. And these are not so dated as to be obsolete. If DC were to team with Scholastic and print 60+ page S&S collections in full color for that market, they'd have a gravy train. I'm fully convinced kids today would like them as much as ever.

I really enjoyed the Jonah Hex Vol. 1 collection. I thought the scripts held up and had a bit more edge than many comics of the early 70s. The artwork was always good with some issues having some amazing character illustration (like the story with the hanging judge and her sons). I would think this stuff would look more washed out in 70s comic book coloring. I'm definitely looking forward to the second Jonah Hex volume.

I'd like to see DC just get more of the Batman out getting a complete run into the late 60s and into the 70s.

Mike Grell's artwork on The Warlord would look good in black and white. I used to nearly have a full run of that title and would love to read it again from the beginning.

I think DC is holding out on the Sgt. Rock hoping that people will pick up those expensive and thin hardcovers. I'd love to read Sgt. Rock from the beginning, but there is no way I am dropping the cash for the hardcovers. The Unknown Soldier is probably next on my list to check out.

DC might be missing the boat and not just getting into some of the 80s stuff for reprint. I think doing some affordable reprints of 80s Batman/Detective, especially when the title was going back and forth might be OK. There is a lot of Gene Colan and Trevor Von Eden artwork that would look good in black and white. I know DC has put some of the Teen Titans stuff into color trade paperbacks, but considering I really just want to read the stories, I'd rather just pay $15 bucks and get 20+ issues of the Wolfman/Perez run instead of having to pay that for a half dozen issues in color. The Moore Swamp Thing with that Bissette/Totleben artwork would look amazing in black and white.

I think a big collection focusing on maybe a certain artist, writer or genre might be popular. There isn't enough Enemy Ace to fill a volume, but if you paired it up with maybe The Losers or some other DC war title, you could put together an excellent book.

Well, I'm not sure how they did it, but an Enemy Ace Showcase is due in February:

I'm excited a Hell about this one. Kubert's work looks incredible in B&W.

Great news! Some of my favorite comics from childhood, the vast majority of which I haven't had a chance to read since then.

And I'm sure I'll still go ahead & track down the last couple of Severin-drawn backups in Unknown Soldier that I don't own ... but now I don't have to.

I'll be interested to see what cover they go with. I've noted before that the following is one of my top 2 or 3 of all time -- it sure reached out & grabbed me as an 8-year-old:

I can't believe that I haven't thought of this one before.

I was flipping through a World's Finest Dollar Comics last night and it occured to me that the world needs a Showcase Presents: The Creeper asap!

I'm not sure how long a run we'd be looking at, but between the initial series, a few guest appearances in JLA and Batman etc... the back-ups in Adventure and World's Finest, we should be able to easily fill up a volume.

There would be a lot of great Ditko in there - and I think it would look awesome in b&w.

My guess is that one, along with Showcase #57 might be a bit too black for the Showcase volumes. It's funny - there are a lot of great covers for Enemy Ace, but many show him getting beat up or as a secondary figure.

My guess is that they'll go with SSWS #149 as the one that'll best showcase the character and catch the eye of a LCS shopper.

I certainly could see that. As it happens, the solicitation shows this --

but surely it's a mere placeholder & we'll instead get a cover from Showcase or SSWS. Of course, the listing does cite the comic in question, which to my knowledge otherwise consisted of reprints ...

I would have thought it was too short, but a quick count shows it's viable:
Showcase 73, Beware the Creeper 1-6, First Issue Special 7, Adventure 445-447, World's Finest 250-255, Flash 318-323, and Cancelled Comics Cavalcade 2 exhaust Creeper's pre-Crisis solo stories. Add to that his major appearances as guest star in B&B 80 and 178, Detective 418 and 447-448, JLA 70, Joker 3, Super-Team Family 2, DC Comics Presents 88, plus a page from Who's Who 5 and you reach 507 pages (counting significantly "Creepery" covers). If that's not quite enough, the page count could be padded with an appropriate backup or two (like the unpublished version of Ditko's single "Odd Man" story).

Creeper also appeared as a member of the Secret Society of Super-Villains in #9-10 of that title.

Cool, thanks for doing the legwork on that.

I don't think I've read any of those Flash back-ups, wasn't aware of 'em.

How are they?

There's another B&B story (#143) drawn by some guy named Aparo, so that helps pad the total.

507 pages would be the shortest Showcase Presents... to date. According to DC's website, the shortest to date are:

512 Pages
Flash #1
Batman #2
Robin #1
Teen Titans #2

520 Pages
Secret Society of Super-Villains #1
Justice League of America #2
Superman Family #2
The Brave & The Bold #2

I've been looking forward to this for a long time. The first one was almost entirely Jimmy Olsen; now we begin alternating in some Lois Lane. Once upon a time, I thought they were going to include Supergirl in this, but now I see she's getting her own collection.

Now, if only we could see a Superboy Showcase, collecting all those Adventure and Superboy stories. <Sigh> I wish they'd settle that darned lawsuit.

The one I'd be most interested in right now is Weird War Tales--and I think it's likely to show up next year. The time frame is right, they've just announced a surprising 5th volume in the war genre, and this one would crossover with the audience that presumably made House of Mystery successful enough for a followup volume. It's one that I rarely sampled when it was on the stands, with a variety of artists. As an anthology, it probably won't feel as repetitious as some of the other war volumes have (Haunted Tank and War That Time Forgot in particular).

Speaking of which... How would you rate the first volumes of the Phantom stranger and Challengers of the unknown? I've been considering getting them, now that our Canadian loonie is actually worth something.

The Phantom Stranger is a must-have. The Challs are great fun while Kirby's at the drawing board but the rest of the book is okay-to-mediocre depending on how much you like Bob Brown. I liked it but your mileasge may vary.

That last comment is worth its weight in gold!

There have been times I liked Bob Brown's art (Daredevil, notably) but not that often.

Thanks for the Stranger recommendation; I have a few issues with nice Aparo art and would welcome more of the same!

Here' my highly favorable review of Showcase Presents Phantom Stranger Volume 1 (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showpost.php?p=3887788&postcount=5) from last year. But I'm very biased toward the Stranger and to Jim Aparo.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the U.S. dollar.

That should favor exportation; the US should feel free to export more inexpensive comics to Canada. I promise we won't call it unfair competition.

Lucky you then, the Metal Men (http://www.amazon.com/Showcase-Presents-Metal-Men-Vol/dp/1401215599/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-4482824-2377608?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1194194339&sr=1-1) volume is already out.

When I decided to start collecting some Showcase Presents volumes, I first thought of getting this one. But settled instead on The Elongated Man volume, since we can't get him in modern comics anymore :(

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but I'd buy a Showcase presents edition of Jack Kirby's The Demon in a flash.
