These were both released today, anybody else pick them up.

I specifically went to my local shop at opening time to get them. $9.99 for 500+ pages is such a great deal I can't even put it into words.

I have to say I really liked the design for the books too.

And I just noticed Showcase Presents Metamorpho Vol. 1 is scheduled to ship (according to Diamond) next week!

I have no idea how I'm going to read all of this stuff anytime soon. But I'm gonna dive into the Superman volume tonight.

with any luck, they're sitting at my lcs even as i type -- i've got a standing order there for all the showcase presents. (unfortunately, i won't be able to get by there till [knock wood) saturday, since i have the rare privilege of working 11-hour days without a break of any kind).

since these first two were two weeks late, i'm wondering if the metamorpho volume will indeed ship as scheduled ...

Question, are the book dimentions exactly the same as Marvel's Essentials? I just want to know if they'll stack on the book shelf evenly with my other B&W archive books.

The Showcase books are exactly as thick and wide as the newer Marvel Essentials. However, the Showcase books are as tall as the old Marvel Essentials (the ones with the original covers and spines) - which means they're just slightly taller than the newer Marvel Essentials, maybe by half an inch.

I picked up both collections today.

If anyone doesn't know, this is what they collect:

Showcase Presents Green Lantern collects Showcase 22-24 and Green Lantern 1-17.

Showcase Presents Superman collects a variety of Superman tales from the late 1950s: Superman 122-133, and Action Comics 241-257.

I just read "The Kryptonite Man," from Action 249, from the Superman collection, for the first time. I think this is my first exposure to a Superman tale from that era, and...well, it is, far and away, the absolute strangest and most ridiculous Superman story I have ever read. I love it. :D

Great stuff. Starting to love those classic comics...

Hopefully this won't stop DC from doing the Batman Chronicles. In full color is worth the extra cash.

I picked up the GL one. Haven't started reading it, yet, but it definitely looks good!

Now, I'm going to sit back and wait for Shadow to bellow: "It's a coloring book, you heathens!" :D

Mine are allegedly coming from Amazon. Not having a comic shop within 150 miles is hell. I did order them along with Essential Hulk, vol. 3 to get free shipping. So...in the interim, to get myself in a Silver Age frame of mind, I'm going to read my Flash Archives vols. 1 and 2.

Superman and Green Lantern ain't got nothin' on me
'Cause the price they marked 'em is practical-ly free . . .

Read them today out in the . . . sunshine, of course.

you should try www.dcbservice.com. I'm two hours from a comic shop myself so I just pre-order from them every month. And so far every Showcase has been 50% off, as are many trades & HCs. The order that just shipped Friday has Absolute Hush, World's Greatest Super-Heroes & both Showcases. All 1/2 off cover price. :D

alas, my lcs owner got fewer copies of the superman showcase than he'd anticipated, so i guess his stock was already spoken for. i got the gl, though. as i'd anticipated, the art in these looks a lot "cleaner" than in the marvel essentials, i guess refelecting the 2 companies' differing approaches to art back in the early silver age.

locally, at least, these appear to be selling well. i dunno if the aforementioned lcs had any gl volumes left over, but from what i could tell the city's other shop sold its last copy while i was there picking up defenders 3. they'd already sold out of the superman showcase, too.
