Quick thought:

If Blade of the Immortal Vol 8 is due next week and we stay on 1 volume every 2 weeks then the last volume that's currently published will be due the last week in December. I'm sure with the upcoming holidays we may skip a week here and there so that may put us into January, which is fine.

But here's where I'm going with this: if we pick a new title NOW we can start ordering them (and get them at good discounts) and have the trades in time to read and discuss in January, or whenever.

Augie just mentioned in this week's podcast that he'd be interested in doing one of the ABC books. I know there are other manga series' out there that some of you have interest in. I think I've heard Akira and Battle Royale mentioned before.

So let's hear it! What else do you guys wanna try / re-read? Or am I nuts for even talking about this while we are only at the 1/2 way point? Let it rip! :D

We are comic book fans. Of course we're talking about What Comes Next months in advance. We're always looking forward instead of at our own two feet.

Besides, we might need items for our Christmas lists, right? ;-)

AKIRA
ABC
BATTLE ROYALE
TRANSMETROPOLITAN (it's been awhile since last I read 'em)
100 BULLETS
LONE WOLF AND CUB (we could go a whole year on that, so maybe not)
USAGI YOJIMBO

I keep thinking of the longer series, but we might also work our way through something shorter --

WATCHMEN (a chapter a week)
PLANETES

That's right! USAGI YOJIMBO was high on my list. These are all great ideas. Excellent!

I don't know about you guys, but I just re-read ALL of Sin City around movie time, so even though it's awesome I rather not do that. Strangers in Paradise is ending in a year and an half, so that's prime.

Let's get some more input and then vote on it!

Planetes is a good one for me - purely because I've had the complete set sitting around unread for ages.

I'd say not Battle Royale. There really isn't enough to discuss in one issue of Battle Royale.

Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind would be good, but depending on whether people are reading the 4 volume set or the 7 (ish) volume set, the books will break in different places.

Maybe Morrison's JLA? I've been meaning to re-read those.

I think if we did Watchmen it would probably work better two chapters a week. The story is structured in to twi issue chunks - and that is how the french version was released

I'm always up for any excuse to read Usagi Yojimbo, and with this new diamond policy on minimum sales for comics that they carry, I might be forced to convert this series to trade sooner than I originally planned because I'm not sure whether the singles sell the minimum 5,000 per issue or not (hoping I am wrong, but still).

Sandman would also make for a good discussion topic, as would Lucifer

If we want to stick with manga though, my reccommendation is for Lone Wolf and Cub. It's a bit more episodic than Blade of the Immortal, but it's a really good historical fiction/samurai comic.

USAGI is safe. If nothing else, Dark Horse's exclusive contract with Diamond will guarantee that.

And having just read my first story of it, I'd even throw out ASTERIX. OK, I'll be alone in reading that one, but I'm planning on digging into a bunch more of those soon.

More realistically, I'm surprised nobody's mentioned IRON WOK JAN yet. . .

I'd happily join in on that one - I've got the complete set of those

I'm very jealous at the moment. I know I don't have time to dig through 30 or so volumes of the stuff, but ASTERIX IN BELGIUM was magnificent. Of course, part of the reason for that is my Belgian heritage, but I'll get into all of that in the review next week in Pipeline. =)

I just finished Sandman a few months ago, and LW&C would take over a YEAR! Lucifer could be cool... as would IRON WOK JAN!

Keep the ideas comin'! Maybe we'll start a poll on Thursday, when the new BotI is due!

While I still owe the Book Thread my post on volume 7 (it has been a very bad week), I had some ideas on this topic.

Way I see it, we can either jump straight in to another multi-volume set or spend a week or two on single volume standalones. I listed alot below in the hopes of sparking some ideas from others too.

In alphabetical order:

Single volumes
Arrowsmith
Books of Magic (the mini by Gaiman)
Breakfast After Noon
Contract With God
Fray
From Hell
Goldfish
Jinx
Midnight Nation
Ronin
Torso
any Loeb & Sale collaboration

Multiple volumes
Astro City
Cerebus
Daredevil (Miller's original run, plus Born Again)
Daredevil (Bendis's run)
Kabuki
Lucifer
Planetary
Promethea
Queen & Country
Starman
Sandman
Sin City
Sleeper (w/ Point Blank)
Strangers in Paradise
Usagi Yojimbo

Single or Multiple volumes
Bone
Soulwind

Some of these I would regard as just fun reading, while others have multiple layers that would invite discussion. I would shy away from things like The Losers and Y: The Last Man as they are far from complete, and Hellblazer because there exists very little that is in consecutive order.
