I've recently bought the Ultimate Spiderman Collector's Edition HC book and I can't put that book down! I can't believe how gifted this writer is (Bendis)! My interest was peeked when I bought the Ultimate Spiderman game last week and started playing it. I really enjoyed it and wanted to read up on the comic. I've been collecting the recent issues, but I never knew that his writing was this crisp and sharp!

I've now decided to try and get all the issues starting at 1-40. I looked on ebay and just can't believe the cost of the issues from 1-10. Daaayyum! Oh well, I reckon that this series is going to replace the original Spiderman in years to come and the value will only increase.

What do you guys think? Is it a worthy investment?

I'm glad you enjoy it. (and I agree the game is fun)

Since you already have the first HC, why not just collect from there up? Or only in HC? Or perhaps in Trades? It's up to you if it's worth it. As an investment...I'd say it's probably not worth it. But again, it's up to you. Do you think spending $100 on a comic that was published in 2000 is too much? I do.

It is absolutely NOT worth the cash. Years down the road, when the Ultimate line folds, these issues will be near-worthless. Dont believe me? Anyone wanna buy my WildCATS #1 Gold for 60 bucks? ... what, no takers? :p

Hmm.. the thing is that WildCats isn't Spiderman. In fact, his issues have done nothing but gone up from 4 years ago. I will at least purchase #1 just to have it as a "prize". I don't know about this.. I think this Spiderman is probably going to last. It's already near #100.

People said the same thing about Spawn. Heck, once Spawn was more hypered and popular than Spidey, now yeah, he has lasted, but at this point, does anybody care?

True, but McFarlane messed that up. And Spawn didn't do well amongst the public after the movie.

Basically a proper analogy would be X-men and Batman or Superman. Imagine having the very first issues from 20+ years ago. They would be worth a fortune now. Why? Because those heroes have stood the test of time. Ultimate Spiderman is almost a restart of Spiderman and the writer and artist have made it a phenomenal success and it's up to issue #83! You can tell if a comic will stand the test of time once its up to 100 or so. When Jim Lee started with X-men back in the 90s, people thought it was going to be HOT. Well, the stories started getting lame and they stopped the run. This caused the issues to be worth nothing..

You are all correct. I'm taking a big risk on investing in the back issues of USM. Therefore, I'll only look for #1 and forget the rest of the expensive ones.

You know this sentence makes absolutely no sense, right?

I have every issue since #40 or so. The others I have in Trades. I did see issues #3 and #4 at my local comic shop for like 20 bucks so I figured that was worth it (and looking at prices now.... I'd say it was). I think it would be nice to own #1, but I can't justify the price. I think it will only increase in value, but even so, I can't justify it. Its not like I'd ever be tempted to sell it. I would just rather have it just to have it.

USM is a good series. It's amazing Bendis and Bagley have been going at it together this long. It will be a sad day when one or both of them leaves the book.

And yeah, the game is great. Every frame of the game looks like it could have been scanned from the USM pages.

I doubt in 40 years Ultimate will still be as big as it is, if its still running... we've yet to see anyone else handle it so it could crash and burn as soon as Bendis/Bagely leave.

Its a great series and probally will be around for years but if your going to buy the old issues, buy them because you want them not for an investment. Its alot of money to spend and you most likely won't get the return.

Yea, that's true. I'll keep that in mind.

Well as long as it keeps selling better then all other Spiderman titles, I really dont seem them cancelling it, theres no good reason to. I dont even see this book crumbling in the next 6 years.

Dunno if it will REPLACE the originol spidy, but it still is worth every penny, and is a whole lot easier to get into then the old spidy series. If you like it a lot spend the money, if not chill pick up a comic everynow and then when it looks intresting and wait till they sell um on e-bay for cheap.

I hate to say it, but I think you're right.
The stories are great, but will not be nearly as valuable when the Ultimate line folds.
However I don't see that happening for another 5 years. At the very least.

I didn't like Ultimate Spiderman until like after #30. Then the artwork suddenly got better and the storyline improved.

Before, Peter Parker was drawn with the American Psycho expression. It looked like he was ready to lash out and kill someone.

20? Try 40.

Anyway, the silver and golden age books are so expensive not just because of the characters, but because there are so few of them left in existance. Many comics were recycled in the 40s for the war effort, leaving relatively few copies around to be collected.

Go to E-bay get them for cheap. GREAT STORIES. The price if very steep and it dosen't matter if you think it's worth the pice or not if you can't afford it! As far as how long the Ultimate line will countinue who knows? It could replace everything (VERY UNLIKLEY), or it could vanish in like three years. Chances are it will be arround for a long time, but who can guess these things?

Just get the stories in trade and enjoy them. Buying over-priced comics for investment is a sucker's bet. For the cost of Ultimate Spider-man #1, you could easily buy the 4th, 5th, and 6th Hardcovers and have a lot more material to enjoy.

I guess Lee's X-Men #1 is worth nothing because it was overhyped. They printed millions of copies and most of these copies were bought by speculators. Ultimate Spider-Man #1, on the other hand, had a small print run and was a surprise hit. That's why the issue is rare and expensive.

I'd definitely recommend buying the HC's. I found that I didn't like the series after reading the first 2 issues when they first came out. I gave the series a second chance when the first HC was released, and have enjoyed it ever since. I think it just reads better in this format. Also, you get cool extras in the HC volumes, and oversized artwork as well.
