"The Amazing Race: Family Edition (http://www.cbs.com/primetime/amazing_race8/) is the first ever all-family installment of the two-time Emmy Award-winning adventure reality series hosted by Phil Keoghan. Ten teams comprised of four family members will set out on a trek around the world for approximately thirty days in the hopes that they will be the first team to arrive at the final destination and win $1 million."
An exciting start to a season that I'm still iffy on. Will the bigger teams, some of which include children, take something away from the suspense of the previous season, or add to it?
So far I'm pulling for both the Ghagans and the Blacks.
OmG: Kevin and Drew!!!!!!!!!!!! Those guys were my heroes in the original Amazing Race! I can't believe none of the teams recognized them!?

Yeah that was pretty funny.
The new family dynamic is pretty interesting so far. I think its funny that they are coming up with nicknames for the other teams already. The Desperate Houswives one was pretty good.

Okay, this is just sad. This used to be one of the best shows on TV. I always hated that they never spent time in the US, but the idea of having the whole season in North America defeats the purpose of the whole race. And, as much as people hated them, this race is gonna get real boring real fast without any arguing couples.

So are they staying in North America the entire race? The website seems to be implying they are still going around the world.
Maybe they're waiting to wittle the teams down a bit to cut down on aircraft costs.
This does explain why gas is covered now at least.
And I missed something I think; what was that about Kevin and Drew?

Where has it been said that its entirely in North america?
And spideyguy0, if you watched tonight I think you'd see that there was plenty of bickering amongst the different families.
Anyways, my favorites is the Ghagans - aka team marathon family.
I also like the the four blonde sisters.
I can't stand the Paolo's - way too dysfunctional, the Weavers - way too much praying, and Schroeders - cause the dad is pretty horrible.
And I missed something I think; what was that about Kevin and Drew?
Kevin and Drew were the two bald guys at the "frank" stand. Before that, they were one of the top 5 teams on the very first Amazing Race: they were 2 frat brothers from NY, and they were very funny. They lost their place when team Guido used an unfair advantage. :evilangry

A friend of mine told me he read online that it was all North America. Also, the opening credits only show North America, as opposed to other season, and Phil never says "race around the world" and it has been said that this is an 11,000 mile race. Its kinda hard to do a regular Amazing Race in 11,000 miles.
I got the distinct impression that they were going to be staying in the USA -- w/ possibly some trips to Canada or Mexico.
I admit, I was disappointed when they didn't leave the New England area (and the preview for next week looks like Gettysburg). I don't think I've ever seen the first episode NOT have a trip to the airport at some point.
Right now, I'm only pulling for the Widowed Mom and her kids. .but I'm getting real tired (and really quickly) over how many of the teams are praying, and thanking Jesus already. I mean. . more power to em, if they are religious. . but damn . . . it's a little much for me.
I was rooting for the Blacks (that poor kid. .fell in the ditch and couldn't get out!). .but I just about lost it laughing when Phil said "Black Family, you are the last to arrive". . . LOL. . . I'm sorry if it sounds racist. .but it sounded racist when Phil said it.
heh
eh. . . the Italians are dull as are the 3 brothers and sister.
I don't have high hopes for this season. . .

NYC, Pennsylvania, and Jersey are definitely not New England.
Since I lived in NYC for seven years and now live in Philadelphia, it was fun for me to see them racing through my backyard, as it were. I don't mind the all-North-America format, since after seven seasons I think I've seen more than enough airport drama.
Plus, since the teams seem to be driving themselves, they won't have to depend so much on the quality of the cab drivers they get.
I was sorry to see the Blacks go, too. I like the Gaghans and the Aiellos, dislike the Weavers (you don't even know whether Pennsylvania is a state?!) and the Paolos (Shut. Up. All of you. Except Dad, who never says anything.), and am indifferent to most of the other teams so far.

I for one think it's great to spotlight American locations and historic areas. Do you know how many Americans probably never leave their own areas? I for one can't wait to see what other locations are spotlighted. Having spent much time camping and touring in Gettysburg I'm really looking forward to next week.

NYC, Pennsylvania, and Jersey are definitely not New England.
They would be called "The Mid-Atlantic States." Along with Delaware and Maryland. Anything past New York is New England. Anything past Maryland is The South.

That was crazy seeing those guys again and I hope this is a precursor to Amazing Race: All-Stars!
Right now I don't really like the Weaver family; I hate the boy from the Gaghan family (just for singing); and, I hate the sons from the Paolo family.
I like the father from the Paolo family; I like the Aiello family; and, the Linz family seems fun.
I'm still not sold on this family edition though. I would much rather see another season of two people, preferably, an All-Star season.
I bet Boston Rob was disgusted when he saw everyone helping each other in yesterday's episode.

It's only the first episode , teams can afford to help each other out. The throat-cutting will come when it comes down to a few teams left.

It totally did. I was so used to the team descriptions being flashed everytime the team appeared in previous seasons that when I started watching it I was thinking "Black Family? How condescending. Couldn't they just have listed them by name?" and then I realised that was their surname.

Actually, if it does turn out that this is only a North American race, it makes sense to me.
Could you imagine how dangerous it could be to take those kids to some of the places the two-person adult teams regularly go? Like those aggro bus drivers in Africa that got in the models' faces a couple seasons ago?
We're talking major liability waivers that parents might not be willing to sign. At least in America, there's a semblance of control.

I think it was the boy said, "sorry I can't help mom". So, (I believe it was) the girl said, "get used to it dork". That was a pretty good line.
NYC, Pennsylvania, and Jersey are definitely not New England.
Cool. .
I learned something new.
I always thought that all those States up there (the original 13 colonies) were considered "New England"
so what States DO make up "New England" ?

That's a good point. I don't think an 8-year-old girl being groped on an Indian train would make for good TV. And if you do, well, then, (stealing a line from Dennis Miller) you need to step in front of a bus and take one for the team.
Right now, I'm pulling for the four sisters. It's still early, and early on, I always root for the hot women. It's a guy thing.
In an episode or two, once the teams get more distinct, I'm sure I'll start rooting for someone else.
I have a question: What kind of emotional toll is this going to take on some of these really young kids? The Black kids were on the verge of tears. Can you imagine if the other kids make it far into the race? How bad they'll feel when/if they lose? I felt sorry for the Black kids when they were eliminated. I'm sure I'll feel sorry for the other kids when it's their turn, too.

The "New England" area is Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.
The states New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania belong to the "Middle Colonies" or the "Mid-Atlantic".

I agree this is going to be rough on the younger kids; and can't be easy on Phil to have to look at them and tell them they lost.
I wonder if it was the Suits that pressured to have some young kids on the team for the family edition. If they had put a "16+" minimum for everyone in the family then they'd probably have been able to do a world trip and not have as much of that turmoil.
As for if it's North America only, I can understand it and it makes sense, especially since Gas is free this trip too. Part of me is a little bothered by it, but another part of me is glad for it. Because all the races started/ended in North America, I always felt we wouldn't see much of the history/sites that are available here; but now we have the chance.
Still a USA/Canada/European Union/Japan/Australia/New Zealand race could probably have been done safely even with the young kids.
So, if they are just in North America.... anyone heard of any of the places the race is going? Surely if CBS was going throuhg someone would've been seeing something. :)
(Not gonna happen but I'd love to have seen them run throuhg the Maritimes, just so I can point and say "I live there!" :)

That would be cool, but I'm sure they try really hard to keep the locations of the challenges and pit stops a secret. It wouldn't do for fans to show up asking Phil for his autograph while he's trying to check teams in.

Well, Phil definitely said, "Gas and plane tickets" were already taken care of and not part of the starting money for each leg. So it stands to reason the teams will be flying at some point. Possibly a little later on when the teams have been weeded down a bit, since it's tough enough getting 3 seats on a plane at the last minute, 5 is even harder (team plus cameraman).
Freakin' morons. READ YOUR CLUE!!!!
I am so sick of the Jersey Mom's "No one ever listens to me" crap, and it's only the second episode. That 10 or 11 year old kid is starting to annoy me, too. But I have to give him props for helping carry those wounded soldiers.
Still rooting for the four sisters team.
Creative editing at the end, I'm sure. The final team was probably well behind the others. That's nothing new, though.
SNORE. . .
oh my goodness. . . my FAVORITE show on Television. . and I picked up the phone and called a friend during the last 20 minutes.
Oh. .the TV was on in the background, but I had the sound turned down.
The roadblock was stupid, the detour was boring.
and what's this????
no 12 hour rest period?
I suppose if you lose the airport "equalizers". . you have to have it set that all the teams start out about an hour apart. . .
sheesh. . half the fun of the race was watching the team in first place get to the next clue, and have to wait until morning for the place to open up so they could get TO the clue.
two shows, and I'm completely bored.
can't wait for this to be over, so I can have the "real" Amazing Race back.

Part of the Amazing Race is the exotic locales and the cultures. While I love America, I've seen it all before. I'm guessing the Roadblocks aren't going to be too challenging simply because an 8 year old girl has to be able to complete the task. I'm pretty bored as the rest of you.
I did feel horrible for the son in the eliminated family. Gets totally attacked by the Father, and at the end--when it's revealed to be the Dad's fault, he's like "Placing blame on people gets you nowhere." Asshat.

Actually, I like this Amazing Race so far because it's been nothing but the United States. It's a welcome change, considering every season TAR goes to a lot of the same places over and over. Like they always go to India, for one. This may be a chance for some people (possibly me included) to see parts of the U.S. that they might never see otherwise. (Of course, I've been to NYC, Philadelphia, York...)
And sorry bert, but one of the most annoying aspects of TAR is a team getting a lead and then getting shoved back in with the rest of the pack because they get a stupid starting time (like 2:17 a.m.) and have to wait 7 hours until the place opens for business. It's an artificial catch-up that the teams behind don't really earn through anything other than bad planning by the TAR staff and a crappily enforced 12-hour rest rule.

I'm enjoying it too. It is different, but the families are entertaining thus far. That dad who got eliminated was a real idiot. The son had every right to be pissed, especailly after how the dad was blaming him after they missed an exit earlier in the day.

I didn't really watch much of last weeks premeire but I watched last nights and it's ok. Of course I don't think I've ever wanted a team to lose more than the Brooklyn team. The mother nags waaaaaay too much and the kids backtalk waaaaaay too much.
But I do like that they're staying in the US for a while, at least this seasons different.

I'm still enjoying this new season.
The lack of difficult roadblocks hasn't lessened the suspense of the competition IMO.
And the American theme has me hooked. I really hope to see more quirky locations, such as the shoe house.

Phil did NOT start out saying "the teams will leave from here, after a mandatory 12 hour resting period, where the teams may eat, sleep, or interact with each other"

When I read the FAQ last week for the offical website (http://www.cbs.com/primetime/amazing_race8/show/faq.shtml), they mentioned they still have the rest periods, but at least some of the dedicated to interviews they do for the filler parts.
What do the Teams do at a Pit Stop?
During Pit Stops, the Teams primarily eat and sleep, but soon after arriving at the Pit Stop each Team is interviewed about their experiences on the leg of the Race they just completed. Those interviews are eventually used to add depth or emotion to the edited episodes.
Do the Teams ever have time to eat during the Race?
Teams are provided meals at each Pit Stop. Other than that, the Teams decide for themselves when, or even if, they want to eat. Since they must use part of their limited funds to pay for food, many Teams try to eat only what is given to them for free on planes, but if the leg is long enough, they will ultimately have to break down and buy some food. The Teams must always deal with in one dilemma: save money and risk being weak from lack of food, or eat to be strong and risk running out of money?

you know. .
I followed your link, and I'm convinced that FAQ is for the General show. . it's not specific to the "Family Edition"
the questions about paying for the Airline Tickets. . the noting of the "race around the world". . and this answer to the question about the "local greeters"
The "local greeters," as they are known, embody some cultural aspect of whatever country we are in. They may be representatives of the country's native people, or a respected member of the local government, or the person might hold a job commonly associated with the country, such as a fashion model in Italy.
I think that FAQ is for the "regular" editions, not really applying to the Family one.
and come to think of it. . I don't recall Phil giving them money for the leg last night either. . did I just miss it?

What kind of bullshit was that? The family that was last on the challenge was guarenteed to lose. I mean it wouldn't bother me if more than one family could go at a time but set up like that it was impossible for the last family to catch up.
And what the hell was with the Weavers? "Waaaa, we're tired! Waaaa, we're hungry!" I wonder what they would do if faced with real hardship? I want the whining to STOP! Quitcherbitchin and do the damn challenges instead of crying about how hard it is. This is voluntary, you signed up for it, shut the hell up and do it.
yeah. . .
they can't seem to make me happy, can they?
So-- we have the re-appearance of the Mandatory 12 hour rest period. . which gets the families to an airport. . where they sit for 5 hours.
THEN they go to a bus, where they sit for 8 hours.
I suppose it was nice of them to open up the Space and Rocket Center after hours, so they wouldn't have to sit and wait for that to open up (since the museum closes early, and the only thing open late is the IMAX).
yeah. . I know the Space and Rocket Center well. . since my Ex lives in Huntsville (we went there several times. . not much to do in Huntsville :) )
So. . they got to a location I know, and I was still bored.
and that last Detour?. . with the next clue AND the Pit Stop RIGHT there? There was no way the last team at the Detour could catch up (whomever it was). They can edit it all they want, but you PASS NEXT TO the Space Shuttle exhibit when you come in the back doors to the museum (which is where they all came in), every single player knew where that was -- and it was stupid to even pretend there was "drama".
ach. .
no more complaining from me. I'm just not going to watch it anymore this season, and I'll be back when the real AR is back (I can pretty much guarantee that it won't get nominated for an Emmy this year . . unless the Academy is really desparate for candidates.

Ditto. I am a huge AR fan, HUGE! However, this season blows. In the past, I would rearrange plans to make sure I was able to catch it before bedtime (Tivo) but I don't even look forward to it. Last week, I was home doing nothing and I didn't even care to watch it.
On the bright side, I no longer have the issue about missing The Office.

Okay, looks like more creative editing. I figure the Schroeders were well behind the others. And to lose in your home city had to hurt, too. Oh, yeah, drama queen Stassi needs to be seriously beaten.

They are leaving the USA next week BTW, going to Panama apparantly. I missed the preview at the end of last ep due to mom's normal post-ep call, but I saw a preview just now. :)
Last week was interesting. Gotta wonder if places might NOT want TAR to come throuhg. 2 Races ago they went throuhg Sri Lanka then the Tsunami hit. Now they went to New Orleans, and Katrina hit. :)
It was a bit freaky to see the images of NO back then , compared to the ones we've seen recently post-storm.
As for the race itself, I haven't really picked any fav's yet, though some are starting to grow on me. Now that the number of people actually involved are down they can focus more on each family so we can get a better feel of them.
Oh and I guess the reminder for the Great Lakes is now "PHOMES" according to one mom there. I heard that and I was shouting at the screen and boggling. :)

No comments on last nite's ep? Well IMO it was a good ep. A trip down to Panama, a visit to the rainforest, and 2 double bungee jumps off of cranes for the Fast Forward (only one on this race ).
A non-elimination round too, and this was the first time dressing up in all you own actually worked. Man wearing all that stuff in the Panama heat must've been killer.
They look like they are staying in the Panama area or moving elsewhere in Central America too since they are staying in the Rainforests.

All this God stuff the Weavers keep saying is simply Gawd awful; mom said she's ready to reach into the TV and strangle them if she hears them say Pray or God again. :)

That's because they don't get anything. If your car breaks down, the show will replace it. But you don't get any time credits or anything.
That has to suck being in the lead, then going to last because your car stalls. I really hope the Linzs can pass the Godluskis. I am so sick of those four sisters clawing at each other all the time.

I'd sooner buy Season 8 on DVD than Season 7. Rob and Amber are a major NON-selling point for me.
At least the Linzes are fun to watch... and Wally and his girls aren't so bad. But the Weavers may surpass Flo as the people I most would like to dump in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean... next to Rob and Amber.
Seriously, this team claims to be Christians, and all they talk about is how everything sucks and make fun of other teams and whatnaught. And if I heard them call the Godlewski's the "Desperate Housewives" one more time... how would they even know about that show? I'd figure there's nothing more offensive than Barney at their house.
Of course, wanting to dump them in the middle of the Atlantic isn't very Christian of me... must clam down...

Thank GOD that the weavers lost even though at the beginning of that final leg , they looked like they were going into a lead. Those 2 daughters are the worthless whining bitches , notice that in a lot of the roadblocks, they always ask the boy to do while those girls just whine and bitch about the rest of the other teams.
The Linz deserves the victory , they were a cool bunch and they worked well together. The Bransens were good but they do have a handicap in the sense that in the physical challenges , they are weak because most of the team are girls.

I really enjoyed this season. The family concept didn't affect that. Anyway, I'm glad the Linzes won, though I would have been fine with the Bransens. I kept flip-flopping on the Weavers. I did like them for some reason (maybe it was just sympathy), but I too found them to be very hypocritical. Preaching their Christianity, yet isoloating themselves and constantly ridiculing others (players and civilians).

How great was the preview for TAR 9??
Thank God they're back to the original concept!

All-in-all it was an okay season. I was pulling for both the Linzes and Bransens all the way, so to see them finish 1-2 was especially satisfying. Not a fan of the Weavers, especially since the boy is the only one who did anything whlie the other three sat and watched him and bad-mouthed the other families - all while asking God to help them win. Bleh.
Did anyone catch the bonus competition on CBS's website. The Bransens and Weavers battle it out for a car. Interesting, if not overly captivating.
I'm glad the Linzes won, but I hate that damn "Who Dey?" song.
There isn't anything worse than 60,000 Cincinnati Bengals fans singing "Who dey? Who dey? Who dey think dey gonna beat dem Bengals?" when you're a Browns fan standing outside of Riverfront Stadium just after you lost a game you should have won.

Yesssssss , the weavers got nothing. The bransens deservedly got the consolation prize.
I just wanted to say I met the Linz Family this weekend at the Cleveland Auto-Rama and they were cool. They still watch the show, so we talked about the current season for a while (they think Lake is the new Jonathon and the guys want the Double D's to win, but don't think they will). We also talked about previous seasons, too. They were pretty candid when they admitted that the family edition didn't do very well in the ratings. Also, I didn't know this, but The Amazing Race is the most expensive reality TV show to produce. The cost of their last-minute tickets to Panama was, according to them, $33,000.
And we talked about football. The guys are big Bengals fans, and I'm a Browns fan, so we had fun with that.
All-in-all, it was a lot of fun. The only bad thing was I was disappointed with the turn out. In the 20 minutes I talked to them, they didn't sign more than 10 autographs, and 3 of those were for me and some friends of mine.
