When I first started reading comics, one of the first titles I picked was Ultimate Spiderman. I hated it so I didn't think much of the other Ultimate titles.

Now I've been reading articles that Ultimate Hulk has been eating people, and that some Ultimate titles are written at a more mature level. I also like the idea of how the Ultimate universe is much more tied in together, with super-soldiers and arms race.

What are some good titles? Any TPB's to pick up?

I'll probably pick up Ultimates, once I get the two TPB's out. I'm not interested in Spiderman. I'm not really into FF, or X-men, unless of course, their Ultimate Universe counterparts are interesting. I like how there is a stronger spy element, SHEILD, in the Ultimate universe, but I'm guessing that's covered in Ultimates?

The Ultimates is the Ultimate book that deviates the most from it's MU version, so it's a very entertaining book in it's own right.

You'll probably want to start with The Ultimates. There is a hardcover (or 2 tpbs) of the first volume, and one tpb of the current volume so far.

You then might want to use additional Ultimates stories as gateways into the other Ultimate books. Ultimate Six is a crossover with the Ultimates and Spider-Man, Ultimate War is the Ultimates and the X-Men. The Ultimate Galactus trilogy that is currently being published features the Ultimates in all 3 parts. The first part, Ultimate Nightmare features the Ultimates and the X-Men. The second part, Ultimate Secret joins the Ultimates and the Fantastic Four, and it's third issue comes out this week. The final part, Ultimate Extinction looks as though it will join the Ultimates, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four all at once, and I'm thinking maybe an appearance by Spider-Man as well.

You forgot UX-men. The current arc is playing a lot with the whole concept of the superhuman arms war, with the X-Men trying to keep X-Factor (ok, they aren't, but basically) from breaking Lorna Dane out of the Ultimates' headquarters.

Or to make it simple, one group of mutants want to bust their friend out of the joint, the other group is trying to stop them, and in the middle are the Ultimates. Because just as big of a problem, the mutant in jail? Her cell mate is Magneto.

I may have asked this before....

How's Ultimate Iron Man?

here's my general thoughts on ultimate titles...

current ultimate ongoings...

ultimate spider-man - wack
ultimates - dope
ultimate fantastic four - ehhh. pretty boring really
ultimate x-men - dope for millar and vaughan's run, wack for bendis's. really, the difference is night and day

cancelled ultimate on-goings...

ultimate team-up - from what i read it was ok. probably the highest praise you'll see me give bendis.

ultimate mini's...

ultimate daredevil & elektra - didn't read
ultimate elektra - didn't read
ultimate war - wack
ultimate six - wack
ultimate iron man - wack (really disappointed with this one)
ultimate nightmare - ehhh
ultimate secret - pretty good
ultimate hulk vs. wolverine - hasn't come out yet, i'm checking for it though.

hmm, what am i missing?

Good taste? :D

FWIW, even though I completely disagree with your Bendis opinions, The Ultimate DD and Elektra minis were pretty boring. I like the creative teams involved, but these books didn't click with me at all. I think you're missing Ultimate Adventures (unless you listed them and I'm just an idiot) - they were certainly different than any other Ultimate books. Kinda funny, mildly entertaining. Also, Grant Morrison's "Marvel Boy" may have been the first book to take place in the Ultimate U., and it was brilliant (and gorgeous).

Your missing ultimate adventure which is pretty much a rip off of Batman.

Actually, come to think of it, All-Star Batman and Robin might just be a ripoff of Ultimate Adventures...

right now i think the ultimate fantastic four is the best ultimate book. ultimate spiderman is getting out of hand with its teenage drama, ultimate xmen really annoyed me when they turned wolverine into this depressed, emotional, crybaby who now looks like a caveman. but ultimate fantastic four is great. the only thing i didnt like about it was ultimate doctor doom

It really, really sounds like Ultimates is the best jumping-on point for you. Get the hardcover, it's great stuff.
