I understand Unlce Phillip, Thomas Brother is dead. When did this happen? Was it supposed to have occured when Bruce was traveling?

I don't think Phillip Wayne even exists Post-Crisis. Pre-Crisis, he was a necessary plot device to explain who raised Bruce after his parents' deaths. However, Post-Crisis, it has been retconned that Alfred was the Waynes' butler since long before Bruce's parents were murdered and afterwards became Bruce's guardian.

It was at least a while after, as Bruce had taken on Dick as his partner before hiring Alfred.

Wow, and I thought Batman always had Alfred by his side. The post-crisis idea is much better than Alfred being employed later.
On the subject of Pennyworths, the new animated series talks about Alfreds family working for the Cobblepots generations ago. I took this to be something they made up, but it got me thinking. Do the comics say anything about Alfreds family? did his ancestors serve anyone as far as we know?

Pre-Crisis, Alfred's father worked for Thomas Wayne, though I don't believe he was ever seen. Presumably, he died before the Waynes were murdered. Alfred came to work for Bruce on the basis that his father worked for Bruce's.

Post-Crisis, Alfred's father was still a butler, but I don't think it was ever said who he worked for. On his deathbed, he asked Alfred to continue the family tradition, which is why he gave up acting and went to work for Thomas.
