Lets say Marvel asks you for feedback on the Sentry's character thus far, and limits you to one word. What word would you use?

I think mine would be... unwieldy.
Which Dictionary.com describes as:
"Difficult to carry or manage because of size, shape, weight, or complexity: an unwieldy parcel; an unwieldy bureacracy."
I thought of using 'annoying', but that's too broad.

I find it interesting that the Sentry is so widely disliked so early in his 'career' (on this and other boards), and not from over-exposure or poorly written stories. In fact, he's appeared very little, and many people enjoyed the Sentry's original series, and/or thought the NA arc was well written.
That makes some kind of statement...

I mean, sure, I'll give anyone a shot....but that was the lamest "origin" ive ever seen, original sure, but jeezus. "I'm from a comic book" "Somebody hired Mastermind". And his costume = teh suck. I'm sorry, but I think this is a lame attempt at replacing Thor with a Joke, Lamer, and Loser. And you can't tell me this isn't what they're trying to do with Sentry either.
Lets see, Blonde? Check, Beard? Check, Power Level bordering on godhood? Check, Power House of the Avengers? Check. Hell, just hand him a hammer and a winged helm while your at it, atleast it'd be obvious.
I look forward to the day he falls into obscurity (which will prolly be a week after Bendis leaves NA)
Thats all for me today, gonna go take my nerve pills now....

Why some people apparently like the Sentry:
1. He's powerful! Powerful characters are always a sign of quality entertainment.
2. He's going to be Marvel's Superman. (Never mind Gladiator and the various Hyperions)
3. The Void! His weakness is powerful and evil!
4. His retcon secret origin makes them feel, for once, equal to older fans who know everything about Silver Age Marvel.
Why I dislike the Sentry:
1. The hype!
2. Another Superman *yawn*
3. The Void problem: either it's real, and that makes the character unusable except for an occasional thrill, or it's fake, and we have a character that is too powerful to function in the Marvel Universe without heavy doses of PIS and CIS.
4. His retcon secret origin is a heavy-handed gimmick that has now been turned into a convulted mess with the recent storyline in New Avengers. Even readers who like Sentry are confused by him now.
How I might have preferred the Sentry:
1. Tone down the powers somewhat, classic Thor level at best, or maybe somewhat weaker than that but with superhuman speed so he can blitz foes.
2. A different and more original power set. Superman's powers plus light powers is dull and derivative.
3. If his powers had been toned down, there would have been no need for the Void. A more palatable weakness would have been fine with me. Maybe megalomania... he started out with good intentions, but was corrupted by his great power. The whole memory wipe could have been a mistaken attempt to correct some damage that he did, or to protect his original heroic legacy while erasing memory of his crimes.
4. They could have totally sold me on the retcon if they had really gone with it... by doing one-shot issues with classic creative teams of the past, only co-starring Sentry. For example, a one-shot Sentry/Iron Man team-up, written by David Michelinie and drawn by Bob Layton would have easily grabbed my interest. The Sentry/X-Men one-shot could have been written by Chris Claremont and drawn by John Byrne... although given the results of that pairing on The Tenth Circle storyline in the pages of JLA and Doom Patrol, we may have ducked a bullet there.

'Potential' is a good choice, but just to vary a little from that I'll go with...

I guess I'm similar in that I don't disdain the character so much, just don't care enough to spend any money on comics about him.

Yeah, Andy S. Didn't mean to characterize you as a hater. Sounds like you're more indifferent. My bad. Just sayin' the jury is still out with me. I need to see his character develop (never got the original mini, just along for the New Avengers ride). Guess I am in the middle, but willing to follow his story as long as he is a member of the New Avengers. I doubt I'll chase down every book he's been in, however. Now if he keeps tearing the symbiotes in half, well then I may become a huge Sentry fan ;)

Oh, I just realized that your question may have been regarding the new mini series that just came out. I only reacted to the character, having not read the issue yet.
But, though I love JRjr's work, I'm not sure I care for the character.
However, I liked the appearance of the void and enjoyed his misty image, fading in and out.
Don't know if I'll continue buying the series, unless it goes somewhere.
I liked seeing the New Avengers in it, but unless I'm mistaken, the only ones who spoke are Spidey and Logan... the other "newbies" on the team... cooincidence?

Stale as melted butter on concrete...
Very ambitious, but ultimately he needed to be brought back.
The Sentry mini-series had a lot of incredible ideas and undertexts to it. But all in all the main message was "The Sentry is the ultimate good guy. But he needs to go away, or the villian will destroy us all."
And I think it was grand for him to go away for as long as he did. But he needed to come back. He needed to be around for a while. And really it was well down "the hero triumphs against the villian and gets to return."
Hell Johnny Storm and Peter summed it up perfectly.
"Is this a happy ending?
We don't get many of those."
I like him. It was really summed up in the first issue.
"when danger threatens. When all hope is lost.
Suddenly with the power of a million exploding suns!
There is the Sentry."
It'll be interesting if Bendis can try and ballance a human, caring Bob Reynolds that we saw in NA and Jenkins fixated, god who's either crazy or completely right but damn close to crazy from the mini.

Random.
I enjoyed the 10 issue story ar about The Sentry in The New Avengers, but they're suddenly making him out to be like, the Superman of Marvel.
Sure, in terms of how much power he has. But I would hardly call him a popular character, let alone one that is popular enough to warrant this much attention.
It'd almost be like if they suddenly made Aquaman the leader of the JLA.
But hey, I'm open to new ideas. I have yet to read my issue #1 of The Sentry, which I will do after I am done on here :)

Making him marvel's Superman isn't sudden, he's been doing that since his first issue a few years back, and btw Aquaman has been leader of the JLA during Justice LEague Detroit among other times :p
