Is it just me or is Mike Mignola's work getting repetitive? It just dawned on me after seeing the cover of 'On earth as it is in hell' on the site's homepage. It has all the trademarks of your standard Hellboy cover: HB in the foreground, some detailed rendition of a sculpture in background, a skull and a whole lot of black. Don't get me wrong, he's still my favourite artist and his work is still better than anything out there. It's just that I'd like to see him draw something other than demons, skulls, and nazis...
try this link theres non-skull and hellboy stuff in there

Ya know on one hand I get what you’re saying. Mike Mignola is the greatest artist. And on the other hand it seems that on every cover he does (non HB related) there has to be a token demon, or skull, or something like that. But if you were writing a book, and your like 'Mike' (cause you'd have the balls not to call him Mr. Mignola. I'd say sir all day to him.) draw me a cover. Wouldn’t you want a Mignola-esque picture? My local comic dealer isn’t too hip on new artists and books. But when he sees a Mignola cover he knows to hold it for me, if I haven’t already had him hold it for me. So I'll say yes, his work is becoming a little repetitious, but at the same time, that’s his style. And that being his style, he needs to draw me a picture. And I will pay him legal tender for it. Or I will draw him a picture. Fair trade.

I guess it's not the demon thing per se I've got a problem with, it's just that I'd like to see him do other characters/stories than Hellboy stuff... Ironic I should post this on the HB forum ;)

Did you read his interview that someone posted? It was with like comicdom, or something, I cant remember, but I just read it (stupid lack of food). Anyway, Mike talked about that and how hard it was for him doing "super hero stuff". He said what he really wanted to do was the monster drawings. Thats what he digs, its his style. I have to say, his run on X-Men Classics are some of my favorites though, even though they are super hero. I think Mignola also has a place in the "super hero's". Who else does a better Batman? John Cassaday, but he's a totally different style. For me, I could go the rest of my life with Mike just doing the same style. But I dig what your saying. Here's the plan, lets (his faithful followers) make him do a GI Joe run. That'd be so sick, Mignola doing war. Or Thundercats. Anyway, I'll shut up now

Some people think he spends too much time on Hellboy, some people think he spends too much time on side projects...
It's all a matter of taste. I like the skulls and demons and can't wait for more folk lore-ish tales.

Bite thy toungue Tofer!! Mignola and repetitive should never be uttered in the same sentence IMO. Perhaps sometimes his imagery may borrow from familiar sources, but Mike is truly a visionary with a unique sense of just about everything. :)

I am not what one would call a collector of art but I do love every stinkin' piece he makes! Sketch or completed art I am a complete sucker for his work. I love it. I want my house adorned with it, well, when I don't live in a college dorm room anymore. *Sigh* I can dream, can't I? If he was content to just do covers for the rest of his life I'd still be happy. Even if he did nothing but hellboy covers with skulls and statues and demons I'd be happy. As far as I am concerned he can do whatever the heck he wants because I will still love it.

Ok, let me clarify my argument: I have always been a big fan of Mike Mignola's artwork, I even got my first sketch from him in 1988 (!). However, I just feel that lately he's been restricting himself as an artist by covering the same themes over and over again, as opposed to exploring new visual horizons. Also, doing something other than Hellboy would give him a chance to develop his narrative skills and write dialog other than 'Aw crap!' and 'Son of a...'. My favourite Mignola work to this day remains the stuff he did on 'Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser'. I would love to see him tell another epic with his improved graphic skills. Skulls and demons would still be welcome :)

WELCOME TO HOUSE CHURCH OF MIGNOLA. TODAY YOUR PREACHER IS DANNYBOY7783. Prech on Danny Boy, Preach on. You think Mignola would come do a mural on my wall? How much would that cost? I'll buy him dinner at the Sizzler

I'm sorta weary from watching this thread and wondering if it will end up being a possible headache for me-- I'm disabling it for now. Don't have the energy to check the forum alot today.
In general, everyone please give me a break for a while. No controversy for me to have to watch everytime I'm online. Some threads/comments are better suited to be letters to the lettercol.

Tofer, is this CR(?), it's just that I've been having to be super-mod and I'm a bit beat up right now. Not directed at anyone.
