My copy came in the mail today and it looks great.I wasn't sure what to expect when I heard it was going to be in B&W but I think it might actually look better this way then it did colored.I was never able to read the original issues but I did remember reading the Marvel Spotlight issues in the mini series,The Original Ghost Rider Rides Again from a few years ago and I had some early issues of the regular series that I was able to find off Ebay but its nice to actually have all these early stories in some form or another.I haven't even started reading it yet and I'm already looking forward to Vol.2 when it comes out.Hopefully the wait won't be too long.

Hopefully the wait won't be too long.

Depends on how popular it is. Most Essentials only get one volume a year or so, even the main ones like X-Men and Spider-Man. (Though they do have spinoffs as well, like X-Factor, Spectacular Spider-Man, Uncanny X-Men, etc.) However, Essential Tomb of Dracula released four volumes in fairly quick succession... I'm not sure if that was due to demand or some other factor.

Anyway, yeah, it looks cool. Can't start it until after I finish Killraven (and then Werewolf by Night next month, agh when will I find the time?), but I like what I see so far.

It's missing the Marvel Team-up issue that introduced the Orb (GRs main villain for much of his early run). :(

Other than that, a great collection!

That story was already included in Essential Marvel Team-Up.

I don't have the original copy of that issue either.I think I might have a reprint of it when Marvel Tales was doing reprints from Marvel Team-Up.

And? Essential Defenders and Essential Doctor Strange vol. 2 both have halfa dozen issues that are found in both volumes. I was hoping the EGR would have it so I wouldn't be forced to buy another Essentials volume I'm not interested in.

Marvel also has 3 issues found in both Essential Tomb of Dracula vol. 4 and Essential Monster of Frankenstein. It seems having the issue in another Essentials doesn't mean a whole lot.

Well I finished it off today and I have to say it was great reading the issues I've never read before and re-reading the ones that I have.I did notice that in alot of the early issues, almost every issue had a recap of his origin.I can't wait for Vol.2 to come out whenever that'll be.Now I just have to sit back and wait patiently for my Essential Monster of Frankenstein Vol. 1 and Essential Tomb of Dracula Vol.1-4.Hopefully by the time Essential Werewolf by Night comes out,I'll have all those others read.A couple others I wouldn't mind seeing are Essential Man-Thing,Essential Morbius,Essential Son of Satan and Essential Godzilla.I know the Godzilla one is a real long shot because Marvel doesn't have the rights to the character anymore but I can dream :)

I tell ya, I wasn't gonna pick this up since I have all the original issues, but boy am I glad I did. Even though I'm not enamored of the colorless format, it's a GREAT way to catch back up. I didn't remember ANY of the elements of the 1st arc's villain. Pretty intense! And it makes me realize how faithful to this original iteration of Johnny Blaze's story it seems Garth Ennis's series is going to be.
