View Full Version : Runaways #8... not seeing the point (spoilers)

The end of RUNAWAYS #8 was a bit of a let-down for me.
Karolina was an interesting character, and I don't really get why the writer chose to drop her from the book. How does that make for a better story? I thought she added a lot to the dynamics of the relationships between the children of the Pride.
I mean, the plot itself was a good one. An obligation made by her parents shows up to haunt one of the characters. I just don't get why Vaughn sends the character packing at the end of it. Did he just not have any more Karolina stories he wanted to tell?
I kind of liked the Leapfrog's AI, though it could have used more justification for not having said anything before now.

Alright issue. I think this one has probably been the weakest issue thus far. It's almost like this issue and the last were meant to be the calm before the storm since next issue starts the trip to new york storyarc. Dialogue and plot always top notch but Karoline just up and leaving so quickly didnt ring quite true to me. It seems like shed have at least stuck around with her friends one last night instead of just hauling @$$ like that. never really cared much for her shes my least favorite of the team and now thats shell be gone for the forseeable future i want her back already. go figure.

I think she left out of embaressment, feeling rejected after being turned down, and an overall sense of obligation and duty, i can understand why she left, and besides she now has a hot chick all her own

Did she ever leave hints about liking chicks before? I sure as hell don't remember any.

There were a bunch of hints scattered throughout the first series in particular. Can't remember them offhand, but I definitely remember getting that vibe.

The whole love square with Nico/Alex/Vampireboy & Karolina was a big hint.
It was obvious from the dialogue that she liked Nico back then.

Another one was when (in the middle of a heated fight) she stopped and commented on how pretty she thought Julie Powers was

Yet another hint was the flashback to Alex first discovering the secret of the Pride, when Karolina offers fashion advice to Nico, telling her "she'd look so hot with contacts".
When Nico says that "she's over boys" after Alex's betrayal, Karolina says smiles and says something to the effect of "Cool!"

..nope, that pretty much covers it.

Yeah, but don't girls compliment each other on things such as clothing and such all the time?
About the actual issue, I thought the dialogue and stuff was just fine and dandy, but i really couldn't get past how much i disliked the art.

I'm really surprised that no one mentioned that . . .
SPOILER WARNING
Karolina didn't want to go with her male fiance, until he found out her orientation and changed into a hot woman. (Skrulls can do that.) I guess it's true what they say about teenagers -- all they think about is sex.<g>

I mentioned it in a less descriptive way.
Drew, Karolina has been presumed to be gay for at least a year or more due to hints dropped in the series. At first I thought you were being sarcastic.
If I were more cynical, I would suggest that BKV was able to have a mainstream character come out, but then avoided the drudgery of having to appease everybody's expectations by writing the character out of the series simultaneously.
I won't go that far. Change seems to be a hallmark of this series. I'm thrilled to see that Cloak and Dagger will be back next issue, what with their brains still scrambled by the Pride and all. Should be a lot of fun.

That's not how I saw it.
She felt obliged to go already, but said she couldn't because it would be dishonest. She couldn't marry a guy when she only liked women. But when the skrull demonstrated that there was a workaround, and that he didn't care anyway, she wasn't left with any arguments.

Anyone think the Leapfrog's sudden ability to talk is due to something squirrely that pseudo-Chamber might've done to it?

I'm thinking that BKV got rid of Karolina (for now) for good reason. We'll see within the next couple of arcs how much she'll be missed, or if it was just done to even out the gender dynamic of the team. I'm thinking that she'll be back sooner rather than later, but I do have to agree that this issue was probably the weakest one in quite some time.

Not trying to nit pick here but the Skrull boy suddenly transforming to a hot black chick (liked how the Skrull was black, instead of the usual white, only because it was different) is about the equivalent of a transexual no? I can understand her being attracted to this image she saw but really its just an illusion. Its like some dude putting on a dress, make up and taking hormones for boobs you might think the he/she is all hot at first but once you find out he/she has that extra ooomph shouldnt that pretty much kill any sexual attraction?

Except Skrulls are a completely different race. Maybe they don't have a gender in the first place.

Glad i wasnt born a Skrull than.
But they do have different genders. Virtue's mother was shown to be female, so was Lyja, some of the Skrull analogs for the X-men were females and Thanos's mom as well(if you count Earth X contuinity)
I can't blame her. You can't find a much someone who has the potential to be more interesting or fantastic lover than a shapeshifter. :p
Except maybe Multiple Man. :p

Oh, let me understand this, to save the lives of thousands of people, she couldnt' bear to pretend to be married to a guy because it would be dishonest, but once the guy shows that he can change into a girl, that's different? So she has not problem marrying someone she doesn't know and may have nothing in common with? So being gay, was the things that was keeping her from saving thousands of people?
I think I was right the first time.<g>

No, she was probably figuring that when the Skrull inevitably found out she was gay, then he wouldn't be willing to marry her, and then the people would still die.

Well, that's a nice rationalization, but I don't see any indication of it in the actual text.

Actually, given how this was presented as a ploitical marriage, a la European royalty, consumation could easily be part of the deal, and that would have presented a problem except for the Skrull's natural shapeshifting abilities. (Although they have always seemed to have a "default" appearance and gender, like Lyja)
I kinda hope they rope the Avengers into helping.

definitely seems more adept at a runaways style setting. and he makes dagger look ...credible. that in and of itself is impressive
He's also the artist for the Mary Jane series, isn't he?
