I know I may be a little late asking this, but has anyone read the 12 issue Thanos series from about a year ago? I ask because it was such an amazing book and it ended with a cliffhanger that seemed to indicate Thanos had a universe shaking plan up his sleeve for the near future. Are there any fans of cosmic marvel out there who can tell me if this is ever going to be followed up because i for one cannot wait any longer. Somebody please let me know if u liked this story and if you've heard anything about its follow up.

There is no follow up. That was an ongoing series that was cancelled after 12 (I wanna say 13) issues. Thanos hasn't been seen since.
But it's starting to smell like more cosmic stuff is coming down the pipeline, so I imagine we won't have to wait long before we see Thanos again.

i know it got cancelled, but even so, in the last issue thanos had captured that dark matter heral of galactus so that he could unlock his secrets. Everything leading up to that issue, all of Thanos seeming character development and evolution towards becoming a better man in the series was revealed to be part of his clever chess game to capture this herald. Plus a couple issues before the last one, Thanos finally spoke with Death, which is a huge revelation because she had never spoken back to him. I assume she finally spoke to him because this was his greatest plan of all and he was finally worthy of speaking to her. Which means I absolutely cannot wait for this plan to come to fruition and see what he actually is going to do with this herald (who was so powerful he scared galactus by the way). I know the book wasn't that popular, but if anyone remotely knows what I am talking about please respond because i have not seen it discussed on here n it could potentially be bigger than any of that infinity gauntlet stuff.

I dont know how much more shacking it could be considering at one point he destroyed the universe. Though going by the trend of the series it seemed to me like he wanted to become one of the upper cosmic powers and seemed to be focusing on Galactus. Though he was always overmatched by him by quite a bit.

I too hope we see Thanos return at some point later this year, or early next year...I really thought he would a cameo appearance in 'House of M', due to the universal effect on reality, but that's strictly a mutie event.
If he does return, don't count on Starlin writing him, or Ron Marz...who is the only other guy I've seen that's written him well. Then again, I didn't mind the work of Giffen, either...maybe he should write him again.
There's a new Silver Surfer series coming out early next year (MK) and maybe the Mad Titan will be tied into it somehow...wouldn't mind seeing Adam Warlock again, either. Here's hoping.

No Giffen , Ron Marz is the only one that can write Thanos as good , if not better than Starlin at times.
In my opinion , Giffen work on Thanos was bad and incredibly dull , i am really not surprised that the series was cancelled , it was dying a slow death under Giffen. You compare it to Marz thanos stories that lead up to the cosmic powers mini series and the mini series itself and it was superior to anything Giffen came up with.

Oh it's true that Marz' works is as good as Starlin, but he's not available to write any new Thanos. I posed the question to him in his forum last month.
Giffen's writing wasn't bad at all...a new direction was taken with Thanos, and it was far from dull or boring. It certainly wasn't as bad as the Titan's portrayal in 'Celestial Quest' or the X-Man/Hulk Annual. The latter left a bad taste in my mouth...but I'm glad it was retconned.

I liked Giffen's THANOS work, and was disappointed when it was cancelled so abruptly. The idea of the cosmic prison was nifty, and I thought the supporting cast was nicely handled. And Ron Lim is always welcome on that type of storyline.
Maybe Giffen will touch on some of that stuff in his upcoming DRAX series.

Peter David wrote a mean Thanos during his guest appearance in Captain Marvel.
Giffen's wasn't bad. What irritated me was the ultra heavy accents on certain characters, characters whose presense really didn't matter that much. It was distracting.
I thought the story ended up being interesting.

No offence but obscure character like Starlord & the imperial guardsman Gladiator would appear with not much of a backstory and suddenly there's beyonder , things just happen like that. Weak writing with flat characters will ultimately leave the book unmemorable and that basically was the sum of Giffen's work on Thanos. It reads like Giffen's suicide squad , dull and flat.
Peter David did write a decent thanos , and so did Mark Gruenwald who writes a decent thanos. He wrote a decent story in Quasar about a annual meeting between Thanos & Starfox.

At least Gladiator's presense was explained.
I do agree that the cast was too big, with too many characters that just didn't matter and weren't at all memorable. But it wasn't just "suddenly, the Beyonder!" That was the entire point of the arc.

Maybe you can refresh me because i can tell you that i do not remember the details now as it was anything but memorable.
Why were Starlord and Gladiator there ? Why were the beyonder there ? Why were Death supporting Thanos ?

I'll have to go read it again.

Actually, I like Peter David's work on Thanos more than I like Starlin's. When david is writting him, his being so uber doesn't seem nearly as forced.
The best Thanos writers are Jim Starlin & Peter David.

Davids only wrote 1 decent Thanos story , Marz has wrote several memorable ones and are often mention when you talk about Thanos's feats, i.e the blood and thunder saga where he fought odin , cosmic powers where he fought tyrant etc.

What's the longest a cosmic based comic has lasted at Marvel?

Not counting THOR . . .
SILVER SURFER went over a hundred issues, the last time around.

Giffen's work probably was the weakest of the thanos writers, but it definately had its shining moments and a great premise, even though it might not have been executed in the best way. Thanos actually having a conversation with death was huge though. Honestly i kinda hated what Giffen was doing until the final issue. I felt that ending totally redeemed the whole story though. And whoever brought up Mark Gruenwald is right. I still wish he would do some more Quasar stuff. That was a cosmic series that lasted a while n was one of the greatest comics of all time too. I am being serious too.

My best Thanos writer is Jim Starlin (and I like his art) ever, but I can't wait Drax mini. :)

Ron Lim does the best artwork; for writing, I'd say Starlin.

Its either Surfer or Uatu doing his Rod Serling impression in What If...?
As for Thanos, I'm pretty particular to Starlin on Thanos the way I am about Gerber on Howard the Duck... though Marz isn't bad. Has Byrne ever written the character... one of the MTUs or Marvel 2 in Ones maybe?

I shudder at the thought of Claremont one day getting his X-paws on Thanos...he'd reduce his status to X-villain in no time.

Well, at least it would be bette than the constant cycle of, "I've got a artifact that makes me the most powerful being in existance ... oops. I guess I don't have it anymore. Oh well."

Well, at least it would be bette than the constant cycle of, "I've got a artifact that makes me the most powerful being in existance ... oops. I guess I don't have it anymore. Oh well." Yeah but then he'll be a whipping boy for the X-Men and lose all his credibility, like Apocalypse. There's the trade-off.
Thanos is a mutant. Not a mutant in terms of Earth mutants...he's a mutant Titan Eternal born with Deviant syndrome, but he's just so powerful you really can't compare him to Earth-born mutants.

Mark Gruenwald died? That sucks. How old was he and how'd it happen? I don't know much about the guy aside from seeing his name in some of the best comics i have ever read.

Quasar was my favourite comic at the time, esp the first few years. The first half of his Captain America run was also impressive, and both have held up over the years
but I was under-enamoured with both before he wrapped up his runs

Well he's already the main boss in two games...'Marvel Super Heroes' 2D fighting game and 'MSH: War of the Gems'. Both games are from about ten years back.
I don't see any game with him playing a lead role, cause you have to remember he's a VILLAIN! Plus he's not really that mainstream.

Haha, that'd be great. Thanos runs through a couple thousand Sentinels while eating his third snack of the day... but he doesn't need food, so that doesn't make much sense...
I'm really craving some Thanos, he has always been one of my favorite characters.
EDIT: When does Drax The Destroyer #2 come out?
