Has anyone picked up the 1st issue of Wraithborn yet? What's it like? I think I might buy it.

Is it out already? I haven't seen it.
I was thinking of trying it.

i have it on my pull list, but i don't get my books till the weekend. :(
the art looks to be the definite selling point, how well the story turns out remains to be seen.
I just read it. From the first issue, thus far, I like it. Don't really see the point in discussing the details until someone else has read it. The scenes at school were really good, and I liked the way the action was written.
The art is really good, too.

I didn't feel I could afford it this week with all the comics that came out.
Anyone have a review?

I just read it, and I would definitely say it's worth it. This first issue is mostly character building and origin (which I really enjoy, but I know some others prefer to get to the action earlier), but the ending definitely left me wanting more.

I read it also. the art is good but a little too manga-esque for me. perhaps I don't know what I am talking about. the story is ok also--not really developed yet--but I am a little concerned it is sort of a mix of Buffy and the protype story of 'geek kid at school gets super powers'--done ad naseum at this point. not sure--maybe I'll get #2 because the actually 'writing' is pretty good.

I thought it was excellent. Nice art, good writing and very well paced. Can't wait for the next issue.

It's great. Excellent art, strong writing. There were a couple scenes that seemed weaker than the overall story (too much exposition at the bookstore, too much exposition spoken aloud at one point in particular), but we're talking about a panel or two here and there.
Otherwise, this is a really impressive first issue.

for the most part, i liked it.
the plot isn't exactly original, (buffy/arana meets highlander with a little lovecraft thrown in) but it mixes and matches enough to make it interesting.
overall it's how the story is presented. the dialogue flows well, and the art is fantastic.

Huh. I was wondering if anyone else noticed the similarities to Arana. Which are pretty overwhelming if you just compare the first issue of each.
On the other hand, issue one was one of Arana's strongest, and these guys look like they did a better (if darker) job.

Flipped through this. Very pretty, but awfully written.

I didn't think the writing was that bad. I've read much, much worse.
In fact, compared to ASBM&R #2, it was almost Shakespeare.

The plot was decent but the art was awesome.
I'm definitely into Joe Benitez's art. I can't believe I neglected this dude before. Maybe cause he was doing books I never cared for, Top Cow books like the Darkness and others like Magdelena and Vampirella.
I did some research and his style has improved big time since the days of Weapon Zero. He has the Silvestri style but I think he could be even better than Silvestri himself afte browsing his art here (http://comicartfans.com/). Go ahead, do a search. Top Cow should've signed the man to an exclusive. I think he's even better than the other two former Top Cow artists, Francis Manupal and Talent Cadwell.

I picked up the first issue on a whim and was very disappointed. The premise is extremely uninspired and cliched, the writing is illogical and cardboard cutout dull, and the art wreaks of early-mid 90's Top Cow house style. Oversexed 16 year olds aplenty. IMO though.

I enjoyed issue #1, but I thought #2 was just awful. Terrible writing, and the art wasn't as good. Will probably drop it.
I didn't think the first one was that bad. Not alot happened in the second one, but I probably would have thought better of it had Zoe not been so...extreme. I'm just not particularly fond of that character, which is strange, because I'm usually fine with most characters.

agreed. Missed the first issue, picked up the second. Very pretty, Benitez' style is nice to look at and the book narrowly avoids all the pitfalls of the past, making the main character less body-perfect-centric than what the bad-girl style used to be (of course, her new 'friend' is the typical image of this) but for the art alone, could be worse as it seems like a Witchblade/Darkness/Darkchylde type story set up.

Ugh.
I do still like the art, but this is quickly spiraling down the cliche' hill. Going to give it another issue or two before dropping though.

I haven't read it, but I think I'll give it a shot. Top Cow comparisons have already started. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's interesting. I think I read somewhere that the plot bears a striking resemblance to Witchblade, so I can see where the identification comes from.
Does anyone have details about plot or characters?

Replace Buffy or Arana with the main girl (can't even remember her name) in the biotech armor with the swords and Marilyn Manson makeup stripe.
Replace "The Slayer" or whatever Arana is with "power of the Wraithborn" and there you go.
I dropped it before the current issue. The art is great in a pin-up sense, but it gets hard to follow in the action scenes. And the writing, ...eh. But the plot was something along the lines of Wraithborn are a line of defense against the Elder things that do bump in the night. The power of the wraithborn is passed along from person to person, ideally with someone receiving training to go along with it. (Can't remember exactly where the power originates from.)
A female demon wizard thing wants to bring her Lovecraftian legions to earth. As far as she knew, the only thing in her path, the previous Wraithborn was killed. She finds out though that there is another with the power, and much sword and demon carnage ensues.
However, the girl in question, didn't want the power, doesn't know how to use the power at first, and really doesn't want to be involved.

I almost dropped it, but I want to see where it goes, it's only six issues currently. I do love the art, and agree that sometimes the writing is a bit weak.
Have not read this months, shop was out and I don't have it being pulled, they have one waiting for me at this weeks pickup.

There have been three new issues of Wraithborn since this thread was last touched, and I'm wondering how opinions of this title have shifted since then. Personally, I still think the book has some merit, although the chances of it getting picked up for an extended run look fairly bleak at this point. The writing isn't at all bad, it just seems a little obvious in some places; Melanie needs to lay off the first-person exposition a bit. Voice-overs are fine, but thinking out loud in paragraph form is a bit strange. That aside, I'm still in for the art. The art speaks for itself.
Is anyone else still reading this, and if so, what are your thoughts?
