View Full Version : Anyone use Craig's list?

Just wanted to know who out there has ever used it for anything. I'm advertising a room for rent. The responses (all arriving in my junk-mail folder, fortunately) so far seem to mostly be spammers (i.e. "I'm a single, beautiful model moving to Portland, Maine! I wanna live with YOU!").

Anyone bought/sold anything?

Jobseekers with success?

How about the personals? How legit are they?

I got my current job off of Craig's. And I've bought a few items off there that have all been legit. And after I showed my friend the site, he got an apartment off of there. And I've attended a few market research studies I learned about off the site. Haven't tried posting anything though, or tried the personals.

My ex-girlfriend used Craig's list to find roommates. The first roommate only needed a place during her three-month internship at a local corporation, but she was a really good roommate. The second one was a flake, who moved out after a fight with her boyfriend and moved back in with him in less than 60 days. The third roommate was another good one, a pre-med college student who was very studious and quiet.

Interesting. Are you in a large market area (urban)?

That's another thing with the room-for-rent scenario:

Although I advertised that this is preferably not short-term availability, I seem to get the "oh, I can only stay for 2-3 months" type of responses, even though I clearly say in the ad long-term prefered. Both my landlord and I would prefer a longer-term (i.e. 12 months) commitment. I'm not in a large metro area, so the choices are much more limiting than say Boston or NYC.

Yeah, Los Angeles. Craigs is big here.

So that WAS you in the personals saying you were a rich mature woman doctor all alone looking for young studs to satisfy you, no strings atached (but rope is okay)?

No, I was non-pro pre-teen Asian girls looking to suck cock to make rent.

I know a married couple who met through Craig's list.

Never looked at it myself.

Nicole and I use Craigslist all the time. We have bought and sold things: pianos, computers, furniture. And have found jobs on the site as well.

The cool thing about Craigslist is it is San Francisco Bay Area based. So when you go to http://www.craigslist.org/ you automatically get the SF page.

Isn't Craig's List just an exclusive San Fran helper? I have heard many men get hooked up in distreet encounters on that site.

I buy almost everything that's non-comics off of Craig's or Freecycle.
To me it feels kind of like a local version of eBay. Also, since it's usually used stuff, I have that nice, fuzzy feeling that I'm helping landfill control.

Yeah, I'm still going to use use the local paper, although it's expensive. And I have a flyer saved on my computer, so I'll print one up. But Craig's List does seem to be useful. Ya just gotta weed through some of the riff-raff sometimes, I guess.

I've used Craig's List for job searching. I've gotten a couple of interviews from it too, but nothing that panned out.

It's a pretty decent site, you just have to wade through a lot of junk.

Yeah, now that I've spent some time on it, I see that. And one has to be patient as well, as it can be days between "good items".

The date: was it through the regular personals or the *gasp* casual encounters (if you don't mind me asking)?

Anyone:
Those casual encounters: are those for real, or are they mostly spammers-to-be?

Well, quick roommate search update: I have two girls and two guys interested in the room already after a few days. At this rate I may not need to advertise in the paper. I'm beginning to schedule times for them to come by. I really was hesitant to reply to some emails because they just did not "look right", but so far so good.

Brush with greatness moment.

I used to go drinking with Craig all the time when he and I first showed up in SF. We were both known for showing up to the opening of an envelope.

I still see him from time to time, but by God is he busy now.

I don't know how people can do that. I wouldn't live with someone I didn't already know for any amount of money. Last time I did that was in the dorms when I didn't have any choice.

But, hey, whatever works for you.

I haven't seen much for advertising/sponsors on the site. Does it charge for a customer to buy/sell something? I'm sure it's a profitable site, just wondering how it makes money.

It charges for a few things in specific cities. I know it charges for San Francisco real estate listings. I think some job listings in LA and SF too, but I'm not positive.

I don't know how it is now, but it used to charge just for job listings. Craig runs a skeletal staff.

Law of Unintended Consequences:

I mean, Craigslist is a damn fine thing, and many of us have done well off it, and it's improved the community no end. But it's also putting small (and indeed large) newspapers out of business. It's not immediately obvious, but many newspapers really rely on small ads (particularly dating and sex small ads) to keep afloat. And Craig's put paid to that.

Oh well.

My experience is actually that it works much better to have strangers for roommates. It's much easier to lay out and enforce ground rules. You're not as inclined to let things slide because they're a buddy or something, and then eventually getting silently all stressed out and annoyed. Everyone is automatically more respectful of each other's property and needs. Also more likely to meet financial obligations, because you can't just ask them to be a pal and pick up part of their share until payday or such.

Good point. I have found it very easy to work with these details with people I had not known beforehand. However, back in college, I had roommates who were teammates/friends of mine who made life a living hell and who never paid their shares of things.
My roommate now has his share of the bills ready as soon as I open the envelopes!

I'm just learning how Craig's list is used by Pimps to use their underaged, runaway & kidnapped prostitutes.

DON'T USE IT FOR PAY-FOR-SEX!! Apparenly people either don't know or don't care they are paying for sex-slaves.

I've several friends who got jobs - good jobs - off of Craig's List. All I ever got was people who wouldn't read my resumé, weren't very cooperative when I spoke to them on the phone, and/or seemed really disinterested in actually filling the advertised position. There's a film called 48 Hours on Craig's List, which was all put together via the site, so obviously it's working for others.

now if they'd only take some responsibility and not allow pimps and criminals to sell underaged girls, then that WOULD be something...

Craigslist is amazing.

The following successes:

1. Sold my car within 15 minutes of posting; had the cash in my hand within an hour
2. Sold my bedroom furniture set
3. Found a nice apartment in Seattle
4. Found an amazing house in San Francisco
5. Found my current apartment

There's a reason why Craigslist is making newspapers bleed: it works, and works well.

Craig also sounds like a cool guy from what I've read. It sounds like he has zero interest in selling out and making a palace of pure gold with swimming pools of $1000 bills.

Oh well, indeed. Nobody has a right to stay in business, and certainly nobody has an obligation to support any given industry. If newspapers want to survive, they might want to start figuring out what business they're actually in, and figuring out what they do better than the competition.

I recognize the reality that newspapers have always been primarily in the business of advertising. It's why they exist, it's why they've always existed. I've worked at enough newspapers to know that.

Yeah, but they've generally become truly great when they've ignored that from time to time.

I realize that the news as a purely informational entity is something of a fantasy, but these days, even the fantasy is getting replaced by "is it making money?"
