Yeah, you might be right about a delayed reveal on Ronin, thik...
Still, for my personal tastes, these next two weeks are gonna be good. Conclusion of 'The Sentry' arc, beginning of Ronin... (and return of Finch ...yeah!), not to mention the Ultimates 2 'traitor' reveal, and the conclusion of ASMs Hydra arc (which I really have enjoyed)... oh yeah, and the Ultimate Fantastic Four zombie arc concludes! I'm going to try and wait till all 5 of these are out, pick them up at the same time and savor them all in one reading... if I can learn to resist... ;) Guess I'll just have to be extra careful on the web-surfing so as not to spoil any of this for myself...

Quite probable. And this is different from, say, Thunderbolts, where we STILL don't know who Swordsman is, how?

OT: Have you ever read a mainstream superhero title with comedy in it that you enjoyed? (Mostly meaning highly comedic titles but those that have fairly equal balance too)
True enough, and now we have to figure out who the new Doctor Spectrum is on top of it.
Probably some random hot co-ed that Kilgrave gave the prism to.

similarities - both characters have been mysteries for a while.
differences - its been 2 years since ronin was first revealed to the public, less than a year with the swordsman. the mystery of the swordsman has been enganging with clues to his identity, motives, loyalty and purpose serving as a subplot for almost a year. the mystery of ronin is nothing but a name, a picture and a big guessing game so that whoever gets it right can pat get a few pats on the back for basically making a wild guess.

Swordsman has been a mystery for 12 issues, Ronin is likely to be solved in 3.
That's the key, Ronin hasn't even been IN Avengers yet.

you're right that's the key. it's all hype and no substance.

I think it would be better if we didn't know someone new was comming soon and it just happend.
Yep.
The death of White Tiger in DD.
Never saw that coming. I was shocked and I was pissed because I liked him. But that story was so well written.
The Death of some archer in purple outfits in Avengers.
Everybody knew for months in advance that somebody was dying. Those who don't have internet or walk to the publisher's homepage as well as newboards get to know it with the cover because of the EFFING huge letters.
And as for Swordsman - I'm still looking for an arc called "The new Swordsman".
Fabian builds up interest and the reveal could happen anytime on the last page.
With Ronin on the other hand... he was presented on several covers, had two costumes so far and we get to know that "all will be revealed" in this arc.
It's not that I'm interested to know who Ronin is, because Bendis didn't build up interest. There were no pages in NA so far that dealt with his introduction (like writers to do in the 80ties... and like Fabian is doing with the Swordsman).
My gues is that Ronin will apppear in 1 or 2 pages of #10, mostly hidden in shadows. Then he will have his big scene on the last page of #11 and finally we get to know who he is in #13 and I will think that Bendis wasted to much pages and cut the final short.

For me, well other then me not being surprised at all, no I could care less about daredevil, just another of Bendis dream charaters.
I really don't understand how it would make a difference in how it was hyped. Except of course it would mean that Joe Q and Bendis have been lying about it not being Matt Murdock/Daredevil. Still a bunch of hype for over two years with nothing happening.

Yet, when you look at the whole thing honestly, fans are for the most part more interested in who Ronin is. I guess this means that marketing and hype works. Sure it's a cheap way to introduce a character, but it's an effective one.

And it was confirmed today on Newsarama that the Avengers will not get one artist and continue to use rotating teams to produce extra issues a year.
New Avengers will continue to have a rotating art team so that 14-16 issues are released each year. House of M artists Olivier Coipel is slated to take an arc after his work is completed on HoM.

....I didn't even find out about Avengers till January 04, honest! And regardless, I drew the blacked out cover toward the end of dissassembled, just before solicitation, the way we always do it. The Quesada cover came even later actually. Origionally I drew the alternate cover to issue one, but Bendis had something specific in mind that he wanted for the cover, so I redrew it as the blacked out one. The origional that we were going to scrap ended up getting used in the end, and there's been a lot of confusion because there's this white headed guy on it. That was the Ronin character in his origional incarnation, and I drew it around June 04. You know, the first time I drew Spiderwoman was on that cover too, and the version that got printed is very different than the origional art. I was given reference for her with blonde hair and a white and blue costume with a big honking spider on it. When Bendis saw it colored Frankie had to fix it in photoshop, and he did a great job!
Joe's cover was drawn about a month afterwards with the final incarnation of Ronin. Anyway, it was known before dissassembled that the book would be relaunched, but the promo piece wasn't even concieved till months after that. None of them were!

well i can't argue with that. i'm trying to remember where i got the notion in my head that it was from late '03. thing is, i remember recently looking back at some old articles or something about the news of bendis first writing avengers came out, and something about me had me thinking late '03, but i was kind of in disbelief myself, like "nah, it couldn't have been that long ago could it? no way" but i guess i eventually came around to that thought though. i guess you out of all people would know. it's good to have you posting here.

AT LAST!
The image that was originally used to solicit New Avengers #2 had a white faced dude on it that some people thought may have been a new Vision, some thought maybe a reformed Mysterio, but nobody had ever addressed who that dude might be!
AT LAST, Finch tells us that was just the first image of NA he drew, and that was his original Ronin. File one away to solved.
Happy for you doing Moon Knight Mr. Finch, but I really wish you'd had stayed on NA for a little bit longer to help define it's initial style more.

Hey Dave, Welcome to CBR, hope to see many more posts; we love to see the pros post here at CBR.

Mr. Finch:
I have enjoyed your work ever since I saw your cover for Cyberforce #31. One of the girls was wearing a shirt by one of my favorite bands, Gravity Kills. Awesome!
I wish you luck on Moon Knight, but hope you come back to New Avengers eventually (for more than just the Ronin arc). By the way, the cover NA #5 is the single greatest Wolverine pictue ever! Also, NA #11's cover with Ronin is equally badass!
DJ Rustbucket.
PS--
Your head is waaaaay shinier than Bendis'!
Yeah, well Bendis shaves, whereas I've always been bald. I have a distinct advantage that way.
And thanks! It's sure not often that I meet anyone that remembers the old stuff anymore.
I'm definately off of NA, and I've got another 10 pages to go!

I can't wait for Moon Knight as well, I read the interview with Huston and I thought it was really good, got me hyped for the book. Sounds like he doesn't have any plans beyond the 6 issues so everyone needs to buy the crap out of this series to ensure it comes back
Dave do you know if you will be doing more NA arcs since it was announced they were going to keep it rotating so they can put out 14-16 a year? Love your work on that book
I am definately hoping that the book goes over well, and who knows? If it does well enough, an ongoing may be a possibility. That's kind of thinking far into the speculative future though. Mostly I'm just looking forward to getting onto a book that's more in my comfort zone artistically. I want to do so many things with it, I don't even know where to start!

Thanks! I've been reading the boards for ages, but for some reason it took me till now to write something. I guess I'm a lurker by nature or something.

Yeah, not knocking the Avengers stuff, but Moon Knight seems a lot more up your alley. All capes and angry people. But I think you missed out on your true calling - you need to do the Speedball monthly!!!

For what it's worth, I've got the first 3 issue's of Aphrodite IX - really great looking stuff, it's actually why I was excited that you were doing New Avengers.
