Just a few questions here:
When was the Avengers Assemble battle cry FIRST used?
Did the Defenders ever have one? "Defenders Dissemble!"
How about the Champions?
I don't recall the Fantastic Four ever using one, except for the Thing, "It's Clobbering Time" or the Torch, "Flame On!"
And I'm quite certain the Xmen didn't have one, unless it was Xmen Attack on occassion.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

It was first said by Thor. I know that much, and I'm pretty sure (but not positive) that he said it in the first issue when they decided to actually be a team.

Namor used to shout "Forward, the defnders" and junk like that as I recall, but it never stuck.

It's also one cool catchphrase the JLA doesn't have.

In Avengers # 12 p. 16 Iron Man yells "Avengers Attack!" In issue # 14on p. 8 Thor does throw in a good one with "Fight, Avengers!! To the Death!!" (which is good in its own right but not the real deal). No, the real thing happens a few pages later in issue 14 on page 16 panel 8-in panel 7 Iron Man says "Sound the Battle Cry" and in the next panel Thor lays it down-"Avengers Assemble!"

Thanks for all your hard research.
So it would appear that the famous battle cry arrived just at the tale end of the original Avengers run, eh? Hmmmm.... it almost makes you wonder if Stan had a plan, or was just flying by the seat of his pants? I do recall the cheer at the end of 16, with Cap's quartett, as we most recently saw at the end of #503...
But who knew that it was only two issues earlier that the cry was first used?

I LOVE that cheer at the end of #16! That's a great moment. Personally, I think Stan was totally flying by the seat of his pants. Not to say that was bad or anything-he just seemed all over the place in some areas. Which ended up being such a boon for the Marvel U. Between the first 50 issues of Avengers and FF, they're truly the building blocks to the whole thing. I think it was good that Stan was just letting it come out.
*To find the first time Thor said it, I reread the Essentials volume 1-best thing you can get for under $20 in my opinion!

To my GREAT surprise, I discovered the local library has a growing collection of hard bound trades, and essentials. I picked up the first Captain America Essential volume and was pleasantly surprised that I had read virtually everything in it at one time or another.
But I was also surprised that the only stories that really stood up to re-reading and in terms of drama and consistancy were the Jack Kirby drawn ones. I had forgotten how distasteful the three part Gil Kane Red Skull/Bucky story was... surpassed only by the dreadful Jerry Robins one shot. There were several pages not reproduced from the original art, but shot from comic pages complete with gray tones to complete the story. But that's OK, I still enjoyed them.
I have to agree. For under $20 for about 20 issues, the Essentials are the way to go!

Actually, the traditional Avengers rallying cry emerged a bit sooner than that (though it was indeed first voiced in print by Thor): in AVENGERS #10, during one of the team's battles with the original Masters of Evil, panel 4 of the second-last story page, Thor shouts: "AVENGERS, ASSEMBLE!!"

Ah HA!
So it was a bit earlier than we might have thought!
That at least feels a little better.
Good work, Sean!

They made fun of that in JLA/Avengers. The combined teams rush to attack, with both sides joining in for a big "AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!", and the Wasp pipes up with a "And Justice League, er, Lambaste!" as I recall. :)

And the Nerd tips his pocket-protector to the Dazzler-Slave (which has got to be a good gig). The first utterance is indeed issue 10 page 19 panel 4! Three cheers for Ms. Blaire's boy!

Naw, he just has his copy of Essential Avengers close at hand, and read it cover to cover..... Anyone could have found it, but this question of who said it or who coined it has probably come up every ten years for the last 40 years or so...
