I've read through all the Sandman trades, and I like them, but generally I'm confused. Can anyone summarize the whole plot for me very simply, as if to a particularly slow child? Why and how did dream die exactly? Thanks for your time.

I think he died because he was finally unwilling to change and adapt. It was kind of a tragedy, in that sense.

It was High Tragedy. Ultimately Morpheus realized that he'd spent his existence being a putz and hurting those that he loved. He committed the functional equivalent of suicide by putting Orpheus to rest and then not fighting the fate that that engendered by not battling the Furies. So, in the end, he was redeemed.

So why did Loki and Puck kidnap Daniel and make him into a dream?

They didn't make him in to a dream. Daniel was conceived (?) and gestated in The Dreaming. He was a dream made manifest. All Loki and Puck managed to do was strip away the mortal shell. The kidnapping was to upset Lyta so that she would call down the Furies on Morpheus.
This is all from memory. It's been a few years since I've read The Kindly Ones.

Loki and Puck seemed to be working for somebody, but it was never revealed who it was.
Some people have thought that somehow Morpheus set that up himself.

There's a website devoted to the question of who Loki and Puck were working for.

I think it was Titania, because then there's a trinity of women who were spurned by Dream unknowingly conspiring to kill him, which fits perfectly with the theme of The Kindly Ones. And Titania's emotional reaction to hearing of Dream's death could be because she wanted to get back at him somehow, but didn't realize how much damage she would do.
