View Full Version : The obscure Marvel character that got me into comics has made two recent appearances.

I first got into American superhero comics through the back door. My first American comic was Marvel's GODZILLA # 7, which featured a giant robot called Red Ronin (which was closer to my tastes...big robot anime' and Godzilla movies...at the time; I was four years old). The giant robot was featured in GODZILLA # 7, 8, 9 (cameo), 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 17 (cameo) during 1977-1978, in AVENGERS # 197, 198, and 199 in 1980, an issue of SOLO AVENGERS in 1989, an issue of WOLVERINE in 1996, Alex Ross's WONDERS in 1996 (cameo), EARTH-X in 1999 (cameo) and assorted entries in various editions of THE OFFICIAL HANDBOOK OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE over the years. Very sporadic appearances since the 1970s.

But Red Ronin appeared prominently in the last two issues of EXILES, and is also appearing in this month's issue of MEGAMORPHS. What gives? Why the sudden renewed interest in this Marvel character (or hardware) so near to my heart?

Do I get extra points for looking at your thread title and yelling "RED RONIN!" to myself? :evilsmile

Isnt the name of the new avengers guy Ronin? Might not be red, but could this be a less colorful version of your guy?

Not unless Ronin is a sixty foot tall "japanese-style" robot (and he isn't).

Just FYI, the name "Ronin" refers to a masterless Samurai.

Considerably bigger than that. Red Ronin is about the same size as Godzilla, who has been depicted at various times as between 100-600 feet tall.

Buried Alien corrects me:

60...600...all considerably bigger than the normal human sized Avenger's Ronin.

And I thought I was a nitpicker. :p

Yes, of course you're right. And, come to think of it, kind of hard for there to be room for someone to "drive" him inside his head at only sixty feet. ;)

Red Ronin is huge,my guess would be that he's 300 ft tall. He'd make a great assembly character for the Marvel Legends toy line.It would be like having a two-foot SHOGUN WARRIOR from the 70's.

Why he's made such recent apperances, it's unusual but makes some sense.

Think the Exiles issue he stars in has the team basically visiting a Sentai/Kajuri Hunting(sp?) version of the Marvel Universe, so Red Ronnin's a natural to show up.

As for Megamorphs, it's one of the greatest works of fiction ever and involves heroes fighting villians from afar (using giant robot-cars.) So of course it needed Red Ronnin.

Oh yeah BTW Red Ronnin was also mentioned in passing by Techno in one of the mid 30's/40's issue of Thunderbolts. (He basically built an alarm that would yell out a warning if Red Ronnin ever attacked them.)

RED RONIN appears in "Megamorph" Limited Series... a four issues miniseries released now (from August 2005).
