This issue opens with Ultimate Jean Grey and Ultimate Cyclops staring at a mental image from Scott's past - he and Ultimate Lorna Dane crafting a valentine heart out of junkyard scrap. Jean says it's Scott's most vivid memory of Lorna. Scott says "Stay out of my past, Jean". Jean wonders why Scott has never told her about Lorna. Jean's worried Scott still has feeling for Lorna (well duh, she's a beautiful green-haired sylph) and whether Xavier sent Scott on this mission to keep him from trying to bust out Lorna himself. Scott has a zinger of his own to hurl back at Jean, but he quickly recants and they declare their love for each other.
The scene shifts to The Triskelion. Ultimate Nick Fury is escorting the latest detainee, Ultimate Longshot, down to his cell. Along the way, we see Ultimate Lady Deathstrike and Ultimate Mr. Sinister - but Fury tells Longshot that they keep the real threats downstairs.
Downstairs, Ultimate Magneto is playing chess with Lorna. Lorna accuses Mags of hating humans. Magneto replies that he doesn't kill humans out of hate - he kills them out of love, comparing his tactics to the use of the Atomic Bomb to end WWII. Magneto subtly manipulates Lorna's feelings, the sly dog.
Elsewhere, the New Mutants are on their way to rescue Lorna. Ultimate Nightcrawler appears and makes Ultimate Havok crash their car. The X-Men team of Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Ultimate Wolverine, Ultimate Kitty Pryde, and Ultimate Storm have arrived. Ultimate Cannonball gets a great scene where he rockets Wolverine off the playing field. Kitty goes to handle the remaining New Mutants, only to be clocked by Ultimate Northstar! Storm threatens Jean Paul, but is felled by Ultimate Sunspot, who is then blasted himself with Scott's optic beam.
Ultimate Havok emerges from the wreck of the car. Scott says "Give up, Alex. If you throw down now, it's gonna be to death." Havok's gonna throw down though.
But not until we get an interlude with Ultimate Angel and Ultimate Dazzler, who have cooked up their own plan to help rescue Lorna. Dazzler thinks that success could put her back in Xavier's good graces, but Warren has a bad feeling (possibly from reading the ominous letter column) that something awful's gonna happen. Kissing ensues.
Back to the fight between Cyclops and Havok! Of course, their powers cancel each other out, but Alex has a little trick up his sleeve called ULTIMATE LEAD PIPE! Havok thinks Scott let him when though, because Scott wants him to rescue Lorna. He and Jean Paul speed off.
Nightcrawler and Wolverine bamf back with a defeated Cannoball, to find their teammates and Roberto dusting off. "We got schooled" says Wolverine.
Alex and Jean Paul zoom past the police vehicle containing Ultimate Mystique and Ultimate Forge. Forge wants to waste them before they can screw up Magneto's plan, but Mystique reveals that "Northstar and Havok ARE the plan."
Scott communicates with Jean, but he's not exactly chomping at the bit to take down his brother. Jean says not to worry, she and Ultimate Iceman and Ultimate Colossus will be ready to intercept them. Colossus seems pleased that he'll be seeing Jean Paul again. Jean reminds him that they are there to prevent the New Mutants from reaching The Triskelion.
But who should appear in front of them but six members of The Ultimates! w00t!
SUMMARY: A great issue, it left me wanting the next issue right this minute. I appreciate how Vaughan gives everyone in the book their moment to shine. I would've liked to learn a bit more about Mystique though. The highlight for me were the scenes with Magneto. Vaughan portrays both his menacing nature and his charisma.

My only problem with this issue is that Havok and Cannonball looked to much alike to the point where I thought it was Havok getting out of the car.

Once again just another reason why I get sad when I realize Vaughan will be gone by the end of this....
I love the Cyke/Lorna/Jean thing going on, and I've got to say that Cyke is an excellent character in the Ult. universe, he's the same as 616 but he shines in the fact that it seems like he doesn't "sell-out" as much as he does in the 616 verse. I don't know if that makes sense or not but if you get my drift than cool....
It was also brought up that Scott may have purposely lost so that Alex could save Lorna...... but why??
I don't like the fact that Alex is the older brother, he even looks younger than Scott so I don't understand the turnaround......
The letter pasge brings us seemingly bad news for you Dazzler fans out there...the next ish iwll bring an "X-Man to near death" and that when someone brings up the future of Dazzler, the answer is ....."we'll find out in the next issue!!"....put 2 and 2 together....
I sure hope she doesn't bite the dust....she's one of the best overall made-over X-men and Vaughan has really giver her life, to think he would waste her would be not only surprising but apalling as well.......

Since youre reviewing an Ultimate title, why keep putting Ultimate in front of their names?
No opinion on the book, wont get my pull til next week. But reading your review that question kept popping in my head.

Cyclops getting his dome cracked by a tire iron was pretty hilarious.

Well, since they said it would bring an X-Man to near death...
but Alex has a little trick up his sleeve called ULTIMATE LEAD PIPE!
Heh. Heh heh. Nice. But when are we going to meet the pipe's 616 counterpart?
:D
Nice issue, and like everyone, I'll be sorry to see Vaughn go. I'm also wondering about the anonymous tip Fury got about where to find Longshot. Two guesses:
1) Mystique did it. Forge could cobble together something to track Longshot down, no problem. Mystique did it not because she has any interest in Longshot being behind bars, but because she wants him close by when Magneto's sprung so they can use his luck to their advantage, and then recruit him to the Brotherhood. Sweeeeeeeeeet.
2) Dazzler did it. No idea how she'd know where Longshot was, but it'd fit in with her shady personality and the odd way she seemed to go from completely disagreeable to relatively docile; she's a plant at the mansion, with one of Forge's gizmos keeping her thoughts in positive territory around the Prof and Jean. Cozy up to Angel to get his trust, then use him to help spring Magneto for Mystique, as well as the guy she's really interested in: Longshot. That would fit in with the letter column response to the guy who loved Dazzler, telling him to see how he felt about her after next issue...
Hey, only time will tell.

I had a similar moment in that last issue of Astonishing were Scott says 'War?' to Emma. After years of War being an affectionate nickname for Angel, well....one slips up occasionally.
Nice issue. Do peoples think Essex and Deathstrike are to be recruited? Wouldn't it be hypocritical of Mags to recruit humans to his cause?

Oh, since BKV.TV seems to be reporting a common printing error where Magneto's word balloons on panel 2 of page 12 are being cut off, Brian K. Vaughan posted the dialogue over on his site. I haven't seen anyone else mention it here, though.
Magneto: Similarly, when you or I take “innocent” human lives, we do so to spare the blood of our fellow mutants.
Magneto: We do so to show the people of this planet that our kind will NOT surrender quietly to their bullets, their poison gas, their SENTINELS.

Oh my god, Ultimate Havok rooooooooooooocks!!!!!
*READ THIS BOOK AND TAKE TIPS MILLIGAN*
First off, I think when they said Havok was older than Cyclops a while back, it was confirmed as a mistake...? I'm sure they meant to put younger but it came out wrong.
Secondly, how badass is Alex in the Ultimate Universe!! He announces that he ALWAYS wins their fights, then he SMACKS Cyclops over the head with a lead pipe! Ha! I love it!!!!
Its so obvious Northstar fancies him. Look at the way he's touching his bottom as he carries him...
Dazzler is so dead next issue.
And yes, I got the hint that Deathstrike, Sinister, Longshot & ... (Angel...?) are going to become Apocalypses groupies.
Ultimate X-Men is fab. Alex is such a rebel.

Nope Flight, Havok in the Ultimate Universe is the older brother. Has been from the beginning. BKV even confirmed that it wasn't a mistake back when Havok first turned up. They wanted to avoid the 'Big Brother Scott' dynamic, and make Havok more independant, instead of trying to follow in his brother's footsteps. Which is great, Ultimate Havok is mucho preferred by at least this reader over the 616 version. :)

No, Ultimate Cyclops is pretty much the same as his 616 counterpart- calm, collected, in control of every situation except emotional ones, and basically just the coolest guy out there. Havok, however, is lots different- since UltiHavok isn't younger and doesn't look up to his brother, he's free of feeling like he's in Scott's shadow. He's a bit of a jerk because of it, but he's definitely not the same as 616 Alex.

I actually did notice that in my copy. I wish Marvel were more careful with the printing and layout since Magneto's most important lines in the book are somewhat cut off.
Anyway, another great issue. I can't wait to see the Ultimates kick these guys asses, for the first time I want mutants to get stomped out. The dynamic between Havok and Cyclops are interesting now that we know their backrounds more, it's odd to see Cyclops as the little brother but since it's the Ultimate universe it's a welcome change to make the characters interact on a different perspective.
BTW the scene in the X-Jet with Cyclops and Wolverine got a good chuckle out of me.
Angel and Dazzler make a cool couple, ever since Bendis introduced her a s a punk rocker with sass I've become a big fan. Vaughn just made her all the more better with great characterization.
The way the past villains of Brian Vaughn's run were in the prison was pretty cool, oh and Mystique is just so damn evil throughout the arc. Kudos to Stuart Immonen, he's been a fantastic artist throughout the run so I'm looking very forward to his Next Wave work to see his art fully unleashed.

I think Angel will bite it next issue, and it will be all Dazzler's fault.
Angel is aching for it, considering he's such a one-note, "blah" character. Then it will change the team dynamic/opinion of Dazzler, and offer her more characterization.
I mean -- really -- why off the one character who is actually making an impression on the readers? She's the only Ultimate X-Man to really not register on the 616 readership's radar, and Angel has been nothing but droll since he was introduced.
Plus, it will open opportunities for Angel to be resurrected as Archangel, blah blah blah. Makes a lot more sense than Dazz dying.
But that's just my guesstimate.

I think this is currently the best X title. It stunned me that Havok and Cyclops could hate each other to the point that one killing the other was the only acceptable solution for the two.
The contrast between them is interesting....where Cyclops is generally emotionally restrained, Havok is very emotional, extremely so at times.
I love this version of Dazzler the best. The punk attitude appeals to me.
BKV has quickly become my favorite writer - Ult X, Runaways, Ex Machina, and Y: the Last Man. It is extraordinary that he is writing so many excellent titles simultaneously. Many writers seem to find it difficult to write one :p
