How did Norrin Radd escape his imprisionment on earth?

In the first issue of Volume 3, Reed Richards suggests that the barrier isn't against the Surfer himself, but the board. So, converting the board to energy and using his power like a rocket engine, the Surfer leaves Earth to ask Galactus to remove the barrier.

However, Galactus makes Surfer a deal-Nova, his herald, has been captured by the Skrulls. The Surfer rescues her (great sequence-the facility she's held in is wired to explode should it be breeched, and Norrin outraces the explosion while rescuing her), and in gratitude (close enough for Galactus), Galactus alters the barrier so Surfer can travel to and from Earth at will.

It should also be noted that the relationship between Galactus and Nova is probably the closest thing possible to romance for Galactus-he was fond of her, up until her death, and she felt something for him other than the master/servant relationship, although she was apparently more attracted to Norrin because a) he was the main character, and b) it's just not possible for something like Galactus to reciprocate these sorts of feelings.

It should be noted that, despite having no apparent genetalia, Norrin Radd managed to bag about 5 women during his series:

and I think maybe Nebula, but I'm possibly remembering the story wrong.
