Summery

This issue opens with Reed (Zombie) Richards telling Reed (Ultimate) Richards how their world became the cesspool of zombie madness that it is. Apparently a Superhero (I believe Sentry) fell to Earth after breaking in from another Universe. The first people on the Scene were the Avengers who were turned to Zombies themselves. The infection only targets metahumans, normal humans are just consumed. Twenty-Four hours later the entire planet was devoured and the starved Fantastic (Zombie) Four went out looking for a new supply of food.

Reed (Ultimate) Richards asks what this has to do with him, and Reed (Zombie) Richards tells him that they want to crossover to the UU for more food. But first the Fantastic (Zombie) Four try to eat Reed (Ultimate) Richards. Reed (Ultimate) Richards manages to escape into the sewers only to be followed by the Human (Zombie) Torch. The Human (Zombie) Torch comments that really superheroes don't run like little girls as he flies right past Reed (Ultimate) Richards who has flattened himself on the sewer’s ceiling. Reed (Ultimate) Richards comments that the Human (Zombie) Torch must have been reading too many comics books.

Reed (Ultimate) Richards climbs out of the sewer onto a destroyed times square. He gets snagged in the webbing of a Zombie Spider-man and at least 12 other Zombie Superheroes show up when they smell the fresh meat. Their meal is interrupted by the Zombie Hulk who pops by ripping Reed (Ultimate) Richards out of the webbing intending to eat him. Unfortunately before he can a Semi truck lands on top of him. Reed (Ultimate) Richards wonders what is going on while the scared Zombies try to run away. About 20 cars are hovering over their collective heads. The Cars smash down and explode.

Magneto (Not Zombie) appears before Reed (Ultimate) Richards and tells him that following Magneto is the only hope to live.

Meanwhile back in the UU the Human (Ultimate) Torch is looking for Reed (Ultimate) Richards. He and the other Ultimate Fantastic Four go into the lab to discover the teleported.

Back in Zombie land Magneto tells Reed (Ultimate) Richards that the two of them are the only ones left with powers. Magneto reviles that the world has only been over run in two or three days. Then he introduces Reed (Ultimate) Richards to the last three humans, one of whom needs medication. The survivors wonder if Reed (Ultimate) Richards is related to Reed (Zombie) Richards. Reed (Ultimate) Richards reviles that he is from another universe, and realizes that Reed (Zombie) Richards now has access to his world. He wants to go to the Baxter (Zombie) building and stop them from accessing the Baxter (Ultimate) building. Magneto tells him it is too late his world is dead.

Meanwhile The Fantastic (Ultimate) Four stand in front of the teleported which clicks on and they meet the Fantastic (Zombie) Four.

Review

To start off I would like to say this is by far the best Zombie story I have ever read in comics. What makes zombies scary is the swarm factor. That it does not matter if you can out run them since there is just a never ending legion of them. This is really hard to do in a mainstream superhero book for two reasons. Number one is that you simply can not supply enough zombies with out it spilling over into other books. Unlike DC comics most of the cities in Marvel are real cities so killing the entire population of an existing city and making them zombies is just not practical. The other reason is that Superheroes have superpowers that would make most Zombie swarms useless no matter how many of them there are. The Human Torch could wipe out entire Zombie armies with little effort. So we are usually treated to about five or six dead super-powered individuals fighting some living superheroes.

However this story got it right. Only super-powered people already are zombies. And then entire planet is destroyed. And then Ultimate Reed stumbles upon it as arrogantly optimistic as 616 Reed.

Now for my nitpicking. Most of these can just be ignored as it being an alternate universe, but still kind of annoying. First off even if we go by the approximate 16 million metahumans in the 616 universe here then it would still mean that each one of those 16 mill would have to eat about 375 people in under 24 hours. That is just not all that realistic. And secondly what are they all doing back in New York if it has only been about two days? Most of them should be places like Obscure Japanese Islands and savannas of Africa if they really had consumed the whole planet. But hey alternate universe, we do not know their geography or population.

I am extremely happy to see that the story archs have been cut down lately. All of the previous archs I felt were far too long, particularly the last one where Nihil didn't even appear until issue four. This pacing seems much more interesting.

The Art of course is gorgeous. They were really wise to bring the whole Phoenix Endsong team to this book. I do think that Greg land's hair designs could use a little tweaking (particularly Reed and Johnny). But all in all it looks gorgeous.

I would probably rate this issue the best issue of UFF to be published.

Yeah, I agree that this is a well done zombie story so far. I really dig this book, and it is getting better. Land's art is awesome. Not everyone's taste, I understand (seems the most common complaint is photorealism). Heaven forbid. ;) Can't wait till the conclusion comes out next week. You didn't forget about the two-issue 'Think Tank' arc I hope, Emma. That was an excellent reinterpretation of the Mad Thinker (kudos to Mike Carey). Jae Lee's art is not really my cup o' tea, but it did fit the creepy atmosphere pretty well. Here's hoping the 'Tomb of Namor' arc (3 issues) will reinterpret Namor in a way that is interesting. I have never found him to be very interesting... and look forward this creative team's interpretations of Namor and the Inhumans.
Oh yeah, Johnny's hair? Thumbs up. We've seen him with essentially the same hairstyle forever. The change is refreshing. I mean he's a teenager, and is a bit of a 'Type A' personality, no? I wouldn't be surprised (or bothered) if he gets some body piercing or tatoos.

Best UF4 to date? As a single issue, I dunno. I might put #21 ahead of this one, because the Chrono Bandits getting taken down by Sue was awesome, and let us not forget the setup and misdirection that we all fell for was brilliant. Still, #22 is one of the best of the bunch. I could hardly wait to get it once I finished #21. And now I can hardly wait for #23. I also would put #5 (first fight, against Mole Man's giant dragon creature), #17 (Ben vs. Nihil & Co.) and #20 (Think Tank conclusion) amongst the best single issues. We will have to see how this arc concludes. Best arc so far? Hmmm, either the "The Fantastic" or "Think Tank". Now once this arc ends, maybe I will say "Crossover" is the best, it certainly has the potential to be the best yet. "N-Zone" was pretty good too, some of the sci-fi elements were cool, even when they weren't dealing with Nihil. "Doom" finishes last, though the killer bug attack was pretty cool. Doom needs to develop more into a tyrannical ruler, then perhaps his character will improve. Here's hoping so! :D

Great recap and review! I just started picking up UFF with this arc and I'm loving it. The zombie plot is fun and strikes me as an amusing commentary on the 616 universe. The Ultimate Universe works best for me when they approach it in the widescreen/cinematic aesthetic they've established in the Ultimates and thanx to Greg Land's gorgous art we have a similar effect here. I agree that his hair designs need a little work, but overall I like what he's doing here. Johnny Storm's curly top looks kinda fresh. And Magneto finally looks handsome and regal as he should. Great issue. Can't wait to see what happens next. :)

The piercings would melt every time he flamed on. The tattoos might work out okay.

I don't read UFF, but that sounds kind of cool...

Until I remembered that it's already been done, in Heralds: Paradise X by Jim Krugger. Only it was with Vampires.

Yeah, I loved it too. After hearing about this story I picked up the first two parts. Sooo glad I did! Incredible, fun, scary story. I can't wait to see how it finishes.

So, who was the hero in the blue cape who first brought the sickness to that reality anyway? I'm guessing it was Sentry, maybe...

That is what I thought as well. Only that hero has brown hair and the 616 Sentry has blonde. But still alternate universe.

I am on the fence about Johnny's hair still. It just looks a litle weird to me. Kind of like a really short Medusa's hair. Reed looks like he has a mohawk from certain angles.

But I am really excited about this story arch. It is fresh and new and a great way to ultimatize the Legion of the Unliving. And I love Magneto as a protagonist instead of the rather psychotic killer he normaly comes off as in the UU.

Yeah, Magneto is pretty cool. Greg Land makes him look awesome, with and without the helmet. He does look and speak regal, and his mention of the irony that he is basically stuck with some Homo sapiens to stick together and survive was well written. Still hates us -- or doesn't deny hating us (sorry if I am addressing any Homo superior out there), but this level of devastation requires him to overlook his political leanings for now.

The first zombie was Ultimate Zombie-Sentry. He supposedly "punched a hole in the sky", and simultaneously took on all of the Ultimate Soon-to-be-Zombie-World Avengers -- led by Colonel America. That sure as hell wasn't Ultimate-Zombie NFL SuperPro!

Speaking of costumes, anybody notice Luke Cage in the 'vintage' threads? Yellow shirt and the metal tiara. Also, it seems the Ultimate Zombie-world heroes are designed after the regular Marvel U costumes, not the Ultimate U outfits. So who was the black dude in the blue cloak? He's the only one I couldn't identify...

Possibly Ultimate-Zombie-world Cloak?
