View Full Version : Favorite Batman analogue?

Who is your favorite character based on/inspired by Batman? Could be anyone from Nighthawk to Die Fledermaus, just who do you like the best, and why?

My personal favorite is the Confessor from Astro City. Complex, brilliantly realized character, as scary and as dark and driven and brilliant as Batman should be, a true hero, and yet, a very original take on the character.

Sometimes, especially recently, I like the Midnighter a little more than Batman.

Hmm. Been a while since I reread my run of the old "Hero Alliance" title that was published by Innovation for awhile (and I think at least one other company whose name I forget?) but I really liked the guy they called Sentry, who was obviously cast from the same mold as the Batman (at least in some ways - although he was such a mystery that we readers and the other heroes never did find out who he "really" was under the mask or exactly why he did what he did). Shortly after first meeting him, Victor (a Superman type) was shocked to learn about something he had done - I think it was dangling a hoodlum off the edge of a high roof and threatening to drop him - and asked in concern, "What? But aren't you concerned about your reputation?" Sentry said with a smile, "You bet I am. My reputation goes to the dogs if I don't pull a stunt like that every once in a while!"

Talk about a major communications gap here . . . :)

Heh, I think I love them all by default.

I'll throw in Nighthawk, from Mark Gruenwald's Supreme Power. By acquiring the presidency, Kyle Richmond almost seems like a "realized" Batman.

And of course there's Die Fledermaus. :D

Nosferata The She Bat of She Hulk fame.
Wow, I googled the character. I'm speechless.

http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix/nosferat.htm

Her name is "Purple Hayes". Her base of operations is called the "Nosferattic". She drives in the "Nosferauto". Uses "Nosferatarangs". She saw her parents gunned down when she was a kid, started studying criminology. Got beaten badly the first time she tried heroing, convicing her that she had to "form an identity to strike terror into evil-doer's hearts, and was inspired by a rubber bat that was thrown at her by a disgruntled homeless person". She finds her parents' killer, and he is put to justice in "Dorkham Asylum".

Wow... just wow.

Gotta love She-Hulk's silliness.

I'll go with ol' DW too. That show was funny. Well, from what I remember, it's been a long time. But I can strangely still remember that theme song. That and Gummi Bears...

And don't forget her trusty maid Freda and her evil publicist Lexington Loopner and her arch enemy Jack Serious. Oh, and she is also known as the Dark Princess. Fun stuff from She-Hulk!

Midnighter, probably.
It used to be The Owl, until I learned that he was actually inspired in the Blue Beetle.

I thought about the Owl who was a Daredevil enemy (and maybe he still is, for all I know), and then I thought about Owlman the evil twisted version of Batman from a parallel Earth, and then I wondered if you might be referring to the guys in Alan Moore's "Watchmen"? They had actually used the name "Nite Owl" which is why I didn't make the connection right away.

Nite Owl I and Nite Owl II, with the Nite Owl II costume looking quite similar to Batman's if you replace dark blue with brown and give things a feathery look here and there?

Die Fledermaus - I've been seeing reruns of "Tick" on Toon Disney and it's a pity that there's only one episode ("Evil Sits Down For A Moment") that puts the spotlight on him. I don't much like when Edlund turned him into Bat-Manuel for the live-action show. Something was lost in the transition, there.

and The Black Fox - the John Byrne/Roger Stern character that appeared in Marvel:The Lost Generation.

All-Time Favorite: Courageous Cat (with his trusty sidekick, Minute Mouse)

Courageous Cat was the first "Batman analogue" I ever encountered, and so he holds a special place in my memories. And what an instrumental theme song! Plus, he and Bats share Bob Kane as a creator.

http://www.toontracker.com/courcat/courcat.htm

Runner-up: the original Nightwing (that is, the depowered Superman as basically the Batman of Kandor) -- (with his trusty sidekick, Flamebird)

Superman acting like Batman in a City in a Bottle is just too cool!

Favorite Analogue of Recent Years: Larry-Boy (with his trusty butler, Alfred)

Just when you think he doesn't know what he's doing, Larry-Boy once again saves the day! (And he apparently does it all without arms -- the appendages kind.) When he wears a cape, he's literally a caped crusader. He's got a keen car and a signal in the night sky, too.

Midnighter, hands down. He is Batman with NOOOOOO moral compunctions whatsoever dictating his actions. If you ever want to see what Bats would be like as a cold blooded killer, read the Authority.

Analogue?

Midnighter or Nighthawk. Midnighter for his ability to seemingly overcome anything in being the ultimate human, and Nighthawk for the ba@ss factor in Supreme Power.

Out of all the batman analogues , Faust is the only one that had his own R-rated movie. Not only that , it also inspired a storyline in detective comics 622-624 where a comic book was produced in gotham about a batman who had supernatural origins with cover art by legendary golden age batman artist dick sprang. It was a pretty interesting storyline , a comic book within a comic book. 2 different penciliers for the storyline - one for the comic book , one for the "real world" gotham.

Fantomex from Morrison's New X-men.

Actually according to Morrison himselfFantomex (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantomex) is an analog for Diabolik (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diabolik), who is probably an analog for Fantomas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fant%C3%B4mas). All three are awesome however. Like Batman they are all polymaths and they all posess an air of mystery.

My favorite Batman Analog? I guess I'd have to go with "Steven Grant, Moon Knight".

But, in story, he is Weapon XIII, and he was supposed to be the grimdark urban vigilante of the superteam of Supersentinels Weapon Plus was building. Except that he figured being a French master criminal would be heaps more fun.

Fair point. I must have skimmed over that tidbit in my recent re-read of Morrison's run. Which made me really want to catch up on Morisson's Batman run which I completely missed.

Though he borrows at least as much from the Shadow as he does the Dark Knight Detective, my vote goes to Moon Knight.
