Here's my latest piece. It's going to be used as the cover for a sci fi book from Ronin called "The Reservation" (previously Chronicles of Metrograd). There's a couple of mistakes that were corrected in the final version (steam from breath/coffee blowing the wrong way, reflections/shine on the big blue window pane in the foreground), but I couldn't ever get it to upload into Photobucket. C&C welcome and appreciated.

Marc Williamson: Thank you. Still learning how to color, but this pic let me practice a lot on depth and a few other things that I don't really get a chance to do on the pinup stuff I usually practice on.
Typo Lad: Thanks, glad you like it :D

Instead of starting a whole new thread, I'm just going to keep posting stuff in here :)
Here's something I did last week and completely forgot all about. It's a small banner that the guys and gals at Powerful Press (http://www.powerfulpress.com) asked me to color for one of their webcomics. They sent me a few panels set up for a collage, and told me to have fun with it.
Here's the individual panels and the final banner. I have absolutely no idea who did the lineart :o
C&C always appreciated.

Colored this one for fun the other day before we evacuated for Rita. I figured I always wanted to color a Mad piece, and I've been wanting to color a mech. And since I didn't think I'd have a puter when I got home, I compromised.
I had to rush it some in order to get it finished before we bailed, so the light source is off a little bit, and I didn't get to spend a lotta time on the shadows for the robot, so they kinda suck.

Finally got my generic tablet working in Photoshop, so I decided to give it a test spin to see how it handles. It was definitely a lot faster than mousing! I've still got a bit to learn about controlling the fade/pressure, but I'm still kinda happy with how it came out. I didn't spend a lotta attention to the light source on this one since it was basically a practice run on the tablet.

Haha, thanks howyadoin, that piece was a lotta fun to color. Ya have to have something to go in and color lightheartedly from time to time.

The contest was for a new book coming out called The Sword. Pretty sure I read it was to be a trilogy, but don't quote me. They're not really "my people" though. I just lurk on their forums a lot. They do have a bunch of great talent, and a lot of great ideas coming out of their creators though.

I was told I could post this, so I wanted to share it.
This is the model sheet for the hero of a short story script I wrote that's going to be used in an upcoming fantasy anthology. I'm coloring my own story, so I decided to start working out a color scheme for his clothes. It was quick color job (so don't go too crazy on the crits :P ), but it was so much fun working on a character of my own.

I've been a giddy little fanboy ever since Dean sent me this.
Dean did a bangup job, especially considering how little description I gave him to work with. Dean will also be doing the lineart for the story.

Quick color of the hero's mentor/teacher/Obi-Wan. This one was pretty tough. I needed colors that were bright but powerful, but there needed to be enough difference between the color of the 2 characters to avoid any tangents that could pop up. I went through about 4-5 color schemes before settling on this one.

Been busy lately and now I'm fighting off the flu, but I did manage to get this one finished.
The image was sent to me by Nic Carcieri. It's from a charity book (Bots) he's been working hard on getting together. He asked me if I'd like to color this for the artist and I said sure.
Yes, it's overworked and the color choices are gaudy, but it's a huge friggin robot, man!!! This one was a ton of fun to color.

I haven't had a chance to color in a while with all our Christmas company here, so the other day I snuck in on my computer and did this one fast to keep up on the practicing while the house is crowded. The colors are a little muddy/dark in spots, but it's close to what I was shooting for so I was happy with it.
C&C welcome as always.

Just finished the first of 2 covers I'm doing for an all ages superhero book called Guardians of the Galaxial Spaceways by Jason DeGroot over at Repercussion/Proletariat. I "think" the book is going to debut at Staple in March, but I'm not 100% sure on that yet. This one was approved, and I was told I could post it.
It was actually extremely tough to color this. I had to adjust a lot from my normal coloring style which kept causing my brain to lockup and my hand to go retarded.
Now I'm just down to 2 covers, 3 posters, and my story to be all caught up on projects/deadlines. YAY!
C&C appreciated as always.

Man, you're really good at what you do. I've been noticing lately the increased role of coloring in comics, providing a lot of depth and shading that used to be done with crosshatching and other ink-tricks, and it's great. I've also noticed a few cases where the penciller and inker obviously intended for a certain area to be heavily shaded and the colorist didn't do it. Anyway, my point is you seem to be really good about that type of thing, and I know a lot of people underestimate the skill that goes into coloring (and inking), so my hat's off to you.

Thanks. Glad to know I'm doing something right :D I actually prefer coloring stuff that's heavy on the hatching and spot blacks. Not because it's easier to color, but simply because that's the kinda stuff I grew up on...the old Warren mags, those big b&w Conan mags. But I do like messing around with the stuff that doesn't have the heavy inking (Drewerd's stuff for example). It gives me a lot of room to play and experiment. Luckily Drew's always been nice enough to let me use his stuff for "experimenting".

YAY for bright kiddie colors!!!
Here's the second of the covers I did for the same ages comic (Guardians of the Galaxial Spaceways). Finished it up Friday and sent in 6 different versions of the cover. This is the one they chose. Thanks to Will Caligan and Felton Allen for offering their advice on some of my really newbie questions.

Just an update on the Bots project.
Inspired by Nic's son Ben, PPS set out to create a project to promote autism awareness and raise money for the Autism Society of America. BOTS is a collection of artwork, donated by many of today's top comic artists. Contributors include Tim Sale, Randy Kintz, Sanford Greene, Lesean Thomas and Craig Rousseau. BOTS is currently in production and will debut at Mega Con in Orlando, FL, February 24th-26th.
If you can't find the book anywhere, you can order it online from the Portal Productions site found at this link: Order the Bots book (http://www.portalproductionsstudio.4t.com/index.html)
Nic's also set up a site to order prints of Joshua Ross's Bot pic that I colored. The prints are 11x17 glossy cardstock (I think that's what he told me). The cost for the print is $12 USD, which includes shipping and handling. You can find all the ordering info for the print here: Bot print (http://www.portalproductionsstudio.4t.com/whats_new.html). Just make sure to specify that you're ordering the Ross/Henderson Bot print.
For more information about the Bots project, including a list of contributing artists, visit the Bots blog here: Nic's Bots blog (http://projectautism.blogspot.com/)
All money raised from the sales of the book and prints will be donated to the Autism Society of America.

Been extremely busy coloring, and a lot of it is stuff I can't be showing so I figured I'd post a sneak peek of something I can show.
Here's the 2 page spread from my short story (the one the model sheets I posted in this thread are for). The monochrome flashback panels kicked my butt! Seriously. There's a couple of small things that I'll be fixing, but this is pretty much the final.
Sorry bout the size, photobucket shrunk it down so now you can't see most of the textures.

Thanks 13th. I feel outta my league when I see some of the other artists' contributions to the book, but by golly I'm still gonna do it! There's a few well known names contributing stories and art, so it'll be a hoot to at least be published beside em.

Been too busy to color any "just for fun" pieces to post. But the editor said to post this one as much as I wanted.
Here's page 10 for the short story I wrote for a fantasy anthology. The pulp art fanboy in me took over on this page and wouldn't let go, so I just rolled with it.

Here's a cover I did this weekend for a new comic called Last Sentry. The book will be used as a launch for a new hero universe, so that's kinda cool. No clue as to when launch date is set or anything like that. I couldn't even tell ya the publisher LOL.
No idea if the universe is gonna be all set in the WW2 era or not, but every now and then you need ya a good ole Nazi stompin American hero yarn. This one was pretty fun to color. Not only cuz it's a good ole American soldier hero pic, but because I also had to actually research stuff. That was kinda fun.
Now it's back to another fantasy short and a fantasy mini. I'll post some pages from the new stuff when I'm allowed. :p

Lately, a bunch of people have been asking me how I color and if I could make a tutorial. So I talked to ole Randy, and he gave me a piece to use that he thought would be quick. It was. Making the tutorial took forever though. Ended up getting so late that there's some typos towards the end.
The tutorial's pretty big. Had to split it into two pieces for DA.
Anyway, here's the pic and links to the tutorials are under it.

Hi Mudcat,
among all the pictures, I really like the first one..
It's simpler compared to other pictures, but it has some sort of depth on the
surrounding. I can feel the windy environment with the moving cloud and flying bird..
damn good!!
