I rereading my good books and Im wondering was Supes parents dead at this point? These are on of the few precrisis books I actually like....Oh and how they cover up the whole scandal thing

Both Ma and Pa Kent were dead in the Superman comics Pre-Crisis. They contracted a rare incurable disease when Clark was in his late teens.

Byrne retroactively changed this during his reboot of the character in '86, so both are now alive and well.
In the movies Jonathan died of a heart attack. Martha is still (presumably) alive.

There was a story in the seventies in which a time-travelling Pa visited the adult Superman in Metropolis.

Almost. They found some old chest with interesting items from a few hundred years ago...something to do with pirates who may have been Kent ancestors, or something like that. Anyway, he took them back in a time bubble so they could witness the chest being buried on a tropical island, and shortly after their return to the present they fell ill.
Superboy of course went on a massive guilt trip, blaming himself for their deaths, but later it turned out that the items in the chest had been infected with the disease (don't ask me how it survived for hundreds of years in a sealed box) and they were infected BEFORE their time trip, so it wasn't his fault.
And heavy sunspot activity prevented him from projecting them into the Phantom Zone to save their lives, the way he did Mon-El.
