Anybody remember Marvel comic's Shira Brie aka Lumiya? Parts of her story (As well as her appearence) are very similar to Mara's, and it's possible that's part of where Zahn got the inspiration for the character. Also Mara Jade sounds a little bit like Mary Jane, so perhaps when thinking up Mara Zahn was inspired by another Marvel comics redhead as well...

IIRC, Shira Brie had red-hair and green eyes, just like Mara. But she answered to Vader rather than the Emperor.

She's suppossed to return (as Lumiya) in the Legacy of the Force novels.

Assaj Ventress looks like a man, baby. But Shaak Ti as her real self is most impressive. But why no props for Barriss Offee yet?
