I was doing some research on Enemy Ace today, and found that there were stories in MEN OF WAR. Among others, several were drawn by Howard Chaykin. Has anyone here read these?

Thanx in advance.

I'm a fairly big Chaykin fan, and I was totally unaware of these.

Chaykin can be very good on period type art; I'm thinking about the first issue of the Scorpion for Atlas.

Since he is listed as both penciller and inker, I'm going to say these must be pretty good, tho I've never layed eyes on them. The only thing that might make these look bad is they were done during the period when the printing was pretty awful.

These are pretty pricey at Mile High if that tells you anything.

I agree on the period stuff. I think he did a backup in the Evanier/Spiegle BLACKHAWK that was pretty good. And I also like a JSA story, set in the 40s, that appeared in a DC Christmas comic.

How pricey? Overstreet lists them at $1(GD)-$8(NM).

And didja know there are a bunch of Enemy Ace bacups in UNKNOWN SOLDIER drawn by John Severin?

I knew I shouldn't have revealed this until after I found my copies. :)

MEN OF WAR is, I think, a much overlooked gem in the DC war lineup. When it was running, I liked it more than the contemporary Sgt. Rock and Unknown Soldier. I initially picked it up for the Enemy Ace stories, but actually, the Gravedigger stories were usually superior. That was a great character, with a good hook: black soldier initially assigned to gravedigging duty (in the segregated Army) steps up to a far more significant role. In later issues, Cary Burkett did some really nice jobs on the Dateline: Frontline backups, too.
