View Full Version : IRON MAN: THE INEVITABLE - a new series by Casey/Irving

Big fans of the Iron Man of the Marvel Universe proper have been required to exercise some patience over this past year. While the character can be seen monthly in Brian Bendis’ New Avengers, readers of his solo adventures haven’t had much reading to do of late, with the well-documented delays of the current Warren Ellis-Adi Granov Iron Man story arc bringing that “ongoing” series to a crawl.
Marvel is looking to reward the patience of those fans in December with the debut of Iron Man: The Inevitable, a new six-issue monthly limited series by writer Joe Casey and artist Frazer Irving that will not only help fill the need for contemporary Iron Man solo adventures, but offer a different sort of Iron Man story than is going on in the Ellis-Granov arc.

Irving's Klarion is gorgeous, so I'm in for the art alone!
They should just have this be 7-12 though.

I honestly don't see Ladronn ever coming back to Marvel due to massive screw over they did to him.
Great news with another IM mini, there's definitely a need for at least more Iron Man than we've been getting.

Some of Casey's stuff I dig, others I can take or leave. But this sounds VERY cool. I usually wait for the trade when it comes to mini series, but I'll be picking this up monthly just to support it. It doesn't hurt that Casey's favorite IM writer is also my favorite. :)
Just because you write a story where a superhero and a supervillain throw down doesn't automatically make it ‘mindless’.
I can think of more than a couple writers who should have that tattooed on their arm for easy reference.

Sure, here's the details:
Acclaimed artist J.O. (Cable, Inhumans)Ladronn has announced that he will terminate his exclusive employment status with Marvel at the completion of the current Inhumans limited series.
According to Ladronn's agent, Jean-Marc Lofficier, Ladronn was to be exclusive to Marvel pending three conditions: 1)Marvel pay for Ladronn's work visa, a somewhat standard arrangement in the comics industry 2)Marvel would replace a project which Lofficier and Ladronn had secured at DC but had to forfeit due ot Ladronn's exclusive status with Marvel, which evolved into a 64-page Silver Surfer graphic novel; and 3)that a $5000 stay bonus would be paid to Ladronn if he completed ten out of twelve consecutive issues for Marvel, an agreement which had been a standard practice in the industry, but has been on the outs, and was recently given up by DC.
Ladronn's exclusive contract was in the form of a signed deal memo from January 16, 1998 as well as a longer agreement because which went unsigned because the work visa pending approval. The final agreement was later signed in May of 1999.
However, as a result of miscommunication and crossed wires within Marvel regarding Ladronn's visa, the artist was told in January of 1999 that Marvel would not employ him under the agreed upon terms, and that the agreement regarding Ladronn's visa was made without the knowledge of Marvel's editor in chief, Bob Harras. The changes cost Ladronn $6000 in immigration fees to set right.
Also, shortly after Ladronn signed the exclusive agreement in May, 1999, Marvel canceled the Silver Surfer project he and Lofficier understood they were to produce, something Lofficier clearly feels is a breach of contract by Marvel.
Finally, when Ladronn signed the agreement in May, 1999, the stay bonus provision had been removed.
"This is my interpretation of what happened," said Lofficier in a statement. "Marvel wanted José to be exclusive and had made and agreed to a good faith offer in early '98 which included all the conditions described above. Then, for some mysterious reason, later that year, they withdrew that offer, jeopardizing the visa application in the process. When they realized in early '99 that this meant that Jose would no longer be exclusive to them, they scrambled around and connived to have their immigration lawyer switch visa petitions back from Starwatcher to Marvel, effectively forcing Jose to sign their new contract. And at that point, they saw an opportunity to rid themselves of these other pesky obligations (the Surfer project and the stay bonus) and they grabbed it. Considering all the broken promises, there is no reason for José to remain exclusive to them any longer and he has therefore decided to become a free agent again."

Heh seriously.

Well he was supposedly going to do a Thor project in 2001 but he never did it so I'm not sure if he's going to come back anytime soon although I do hope Marvel gets him back.
The fact that the Silver Surfer project was canned was a travesty.
Check out the pencils on this site among his other works: http://www.hollywoodcomics.com/surferjm.htm
Anyway Frazer Irving is an incredible artist, his Seven Soldiers Klarion the Witchboy is just amazing. I'm happy Iron Man gets such a kickass team. Funny that Marvel also scored Ryan Sook from Zatanna for X-Factor too.

Man, those Ladronn SS pages look incredible.
Anyway, I'm glad to see Marvel is actually getting Iron Man out there again. It's a shame that his book has been so badly delayed that this has become necessary.

I'm of two minds about the matter.
It IS a shame that the regular Iron Man book is ridiculously late.
On the other hand, I get the feeling I'll like Casey's book a lot more than I do Ellis' gabfest.

Here's the thing with Casey, his work is usually either spectacularly awesome or terrible. There's not much middle ground with him. There is no medicore Casey. The question is, will this be awesome Casey, or Uncanny X-Men Casey?

Boy, that's a GOOD reason to be pissed.
And those Silver Surfer pages... GAH! s much as I dislike that character but these are awesome pencils... like Moebius. Just.... better.

That's my fear, too.
I liked Hellcop and I loved EMH, but I hate his Intimates (buying them only because of Cammo) and some other titles as well.
As for Frazer Irving: I only knew that Atuthority special and thought it was awful. But seeing those pencil-only pages makes me think how much the colorist screwed up maybe.

Very true. His Uncanny X-Men run was bad, bad comics. Hopefully this'll be good.

I am psyched. The current solo titles do nothing for me, but this one sounds (and looks) promising. I like how Joe Casey was totally candid and revealed the villains as well as the basic premise of the story. Refreshing. I don't want this done all (or maybe even most) of the time, but once in a while this is okay, Marvel! Especially when you consider that the mini isn't going to start until December! I'm not familiar with Frazier Irving's work, but that cover looks real nice. I like who the villains will be, and David Michelinie's strong influence won't hurt, either. I'm hoping this mini meets or exceeds expectations, and sells well as a result. It just might get Marvel to get serious about giving the fans a truly regular Iron Man book of high quality! Now who's with me! Cheers!

The Landrun issue is retarded beyond belief considering it was with the previous Marvel regime. Landrun would be mad at what, the Marvel name?

I can't agree with you more. I find Ellis' IM to be mind-numbingly boring. Casey handled the character well in EMH, so I'm confident this should be decent.

That said, Casey handled Children of the Atom amazingly, and totally screwed the pooch on Uncanny. Which is only to say that Casey is wildly erratic, and is either amazing or horrfyingly awful. He aims for the fences. When he connects, he's awesome. When he doesn't, big wiffer.

Great news about Casey writing a Iron Man mini, and if I wasnt psyched before, I am now after reading that Casey interview. Boy did he say all the right things! Anyone who praises Michelinie and Layton is okay in my book.
They wrote the definitive Iron Man that should be the template for every other writer IMO.
Looking forward to this, and I'm curious about Frazier Irving's art, I've never read anything by him before.

I agree.
I think he's a better Avengers books writer than an X-title writer since he seems much more familiar with the continuity of those books.

Good point. Still, Casey seems to be a bigger Avengers fan than he is X-fan, so I'm hoping this will translate well into the Iron Man story.
