View Full Version : The MTV Hate Thread

Sooo...

Weekend with mom's friends. One of their kids always hanging out in my room. He's at the MTV age. Yep, most of the weekend has been me hearing MTV on my TV. This is a good thing because now I'm reminded of my hatred of MTV. I sort of needed a reminder of why the network has sucked since I was a teenager. The difference being that now younger kids are watching MTV (He's 11). And honestly I don't blame the kid for liking MTV, considering I was only 2 years older and adored MTV until I turned 16.

The good was it was MTV2, which actually show Music Videos throughout the day. The bad was that MTV2 is now where MTV was when I first started hating it. In other words beginning to be infested with crappy reality shows that really don't have much to do with music except for the title and the background music. And that's only a few of them. The rest are just variations of Jackass which I hate as much as I hate MTV. Maybe moreso.

Then this morning he was watching The Real World. Will that show ever die? Do kids honestly think that's how the real world is like? A bunch of twenty-somthing one-dimensional people sitting around in a two hundred thousand dollar house bitching about how life sucks for them? There was some chauvinistic pig on a confessional "preaching" about how most of the time he wants to conquer girls, except he's finally found one he wants to treat with respect (One of the room mates), and how another room mate became like a little sister to him and he was going to teach her how to "act like a woman should". Cut to a scene where he's explaining to her that if she wears a skirt and sits on a bar she's acting like a slut, and some other roomie agreeing with him, and you have me trying not to barf up my pancakes and sausage breakfast all over my keyboard while restraining myself from throwing said keyboard at the TV! I'm ecstatic the kid changed it after that, though only to watch "Pimp My Ride" on MTV2.

Does "Pimp My Ride" serve a real purpose other than making cars so glamorous that the driver will be car-jacked in a day and his/her car will be stripped and sold for parts while their rotting corpse is being urinated upon by a stray dog in a ditch? Seriously, after they were done with this guy's car I knew he was either going to crash it or someone would steal it and stip it beyond recognition. The guy had a friggin' computer in his trunk! Nothing says, "Hey, jack my ride!" like having a wireless internet computer in your trunk!

MTV should just change their name to PopTV. At least then that would explain the lack of music.

I give it two years and the kid will loathe MTV as much as I do.

I, too, hate MTV and its blonde daughter MTV2. I don't even have cable and I hate them every time I see them. It's unbelievable that they pretty much don't show any music anymore. What little they do show is cut off by screaming morons and adverts or is only on because of music industry payola. MTV is such a miserable place to go. All the people there represent the worst morons of the youth culture and I reckon more than half of those reality show contestants are swimming with VD. It should be called MVD - Morons with Venereal Diseases.

At 16, that's one of the main reasons I stopped watching MTV, because the only time they showed Music Videos was TRL. And rock videos were always cut short because Bubblegum Pop was more popular, and they'd always show some idiot onnscreen in the middle of videos giving a shoutout or talking about how they liked the video.

Along bottom of screen: OMG cant belive this wanna dedicate this song to BLAKE my BF! luv U baby! this song is about our hard times and i love u - Cindi

Couldn't agree more
MTV is basically shite
But the derivatives (MTV2 is my flavour) ain't so bad (well this side anyway). But yeah, Jackass was alright when it first aired (and has some good points), but we have too many derivatives of it, and they're mainly shit (Dirty Sanchez I'm talking about)
I don't give a fuck about some dickheads life, who don't mean shit too me
But they constantly churn out all this shit, & they wonder why music is it such a state

Hate both MTV channels, and I think I'm part of the MTV generation. FUSE is where it's at.

I don't think they have a show that isn't related to music in one way or another.

Fuse is just as bad. Sure they show music, but every time I turn it on it's either crappy "emo" bands or crappy metal bands.

FUSE has the problem that MTV and VH1 have somewhat "monopoly-like" grips on the videos for a lot of bands and FUSE can't show them.

But, yeah...MTV's always been "pop TV". It's only gotten worse as time goes on.

I hate it pretty much much because of all the reality tv has on it. Which is why I hate network tv too.

I only watch 5 channels... :D

MTV's a piece of sh*t. Since they rarely show videos, why the hell to they bother with the VMAs anymore? The only show worth a damn is Subterranean.

Ever since we got cable, I always preferred VH1, but they play vidoes when most people are sleeping. Fortunately, I like some of their non-music shows, and VH1 Classic more than up for their lack of videos.

They show videos. Actually, they show non stop videos...from like mid-night to 7 or 8 am. ;)

Both MTV and VH1.

I certainly don't like what MTV has turned into, but I'm old enough to remember a time when MTV was actually kind of cool. 1980s MTV, to me, was the *real* MTV (especially the New Wave first half; didn't care so much for the hair metal second half); that MTV died with the 80s.

VH1 has been superior to MTV since I've lived in America (since 2000). But slowly its being turned into a MTV-lite. :(

Is that because MTV owns it? Wouldn't put it past them to mess it up. Oh well, at least VH1 has Rachel Perry on it. She's cool.

Top 20 Countdown is my favorite show on that channel. VH1 also has better shows, like Behind The Music. Which are slowly being replaced by sh*tty reality show programs like Hogan Knows Best. Ugh.

I agree. I remember, when MTV first came out. The videos meant something, they mini-mini-movies, but as the 80s waned, MTV just got(in my opinion) more desperate. I do remember, tuning in when they did The Real World, but even that got to be stale and predictable.

For me MTV went past the point of no return when they got rid of 120 Minutes. That was truly the last good show they still had going from the glory days and they decided it would be better to replace it with more Real World reruns. I mean it was 2hrs a week were you actully know you were going to see music videos, and it was not going to be the same 20 crap videos they played the rest of the week. A lot of the bands I ended up really liking were ones I first saw on 120 Minutes.

The way MTV is now just makes me sick.

Then, he explained how Reality TV started here, and how the shows are so stupid. Including "WildBoyz".

Last night I watched an episode of The Real World with my sister because it was her last night of freedom before she starts school- and, apparently, of all the great things on TV, she decided that The Real World was what she wanted to see.

ANYWAY, we're watching the episode and one of the girls (Lacey) on the show is described by her roommates as 'anti-cliche' (i.e. 'stereotypical' MTV music). One of their tasks is to choose a couple bands for some program. Anyway, this girl Lacey wanted to pick the more 'indie' 'artsy-fartsy' bands.

I just think it's kind of funny how someone who doesn't want to be involved with anything 'cliche' is on MTV's The Real World.

If Rachel Perry was on MTV instead of VH1, she'd have been huge long ago. Instead VH1 clearly doesn't know what to do with her. They have her narrate all their shows, host some dumb reality show ("Strip Search") and give away Pontiacs to guys that give her pick-up lines, but these are steps nowhere for her as an actress/model/whatever-it-is-she-wants-to-be. Now she's on Top 20 countdown every two weeks

So much of Hogan knows best looks really scripted. They make a big deal about his daughters career, but her routine is a bunch of dated, derivative material. Hilarious watching Hogan be a stage mother to her, though.

Now they gave that idiot Danny Bonaduce a reality show. Guess they need to fill out his contract after that "real" Partridge Family contest-series bombed.

Huh?

In all honesty, have any of you actually seen a music video lately? I have a hard time believing that you would rather watch those pieces of sh*t than the sh*t that is already on. I don't like most of what is on MTV, but I don't like 50 cent videos either.

The way MTV is now just makes me sick.YES!! I loved 120 Minutes in their pre-grunge days when Dave Kendall was host. Subterranean seems like a latter-day version. Like its predecessor, it was a break from their usual sh*tfest.

Speaking of which, why the hell did VH1 knock Behind the Music down to occasional status? Not that I dislike "Awesomely Bad..." and "I Love The...," but BtM was their best non-music show. The ratings couldn't have been that bad, and it's not as if they lacked source material. What gives?
Agreed. VH1 Classic is beautiful.Yes it is :) It's my favorite channel. I just wish our cable provider had VH1 Hits, which plays current videos.

I actually do not have as much hate as you guys do.

Over here, if you don't like the reality crap on MTV you can always go to MTV Hits, MTV Base, MTV2 (Which rarely shows anything apart from music, Daria and Celebrity Deathmatch), MTV Dance or even VH1 before 9:00pm cause they all show music non stop. And with Digital, there are a gazillion more music channels where nothing happens but music so we're pretty lucky :D

Breaking Bonaduce. See Danny be an alcoholic. See Danny's current wife file for divorce. See Danny go to rehab. See Danny hope that this pays off in some twisted way like it did for Anna Nicole Smith.

I think Vh1 smashed their piggy bank for new shows now that they have three/eight(?) reality shows devoted to pseudo-celebs on their lineup: Gene Simmons, Bonaduce, The Brady Bunch guy that's with that model, Celebrity Fat club, Surreal Life, Best Week Ever, Strip Search, Hulk Hogan and an upcoming show about celebs competing for a recording contract to sing. No news about new episodes of "Awesomely Bad..." "All Access..." or anything.

Btw, about VH1 not doing "Behind the Music" often: I think they're convinced that E! cornered the market on that type of show with their "True Hollywood Story" which has a larger variety of subjects. Plus both these shows were rips of "A&E Biography" and "Lifetime:Intimate Portrait" anyway, which were very popular in the late 90's and people still watch them, even spining off into THE BIOGRAPHY CHANNEL, which shows a lot of British detective stuff as well.

Hi
Been reading through the posts on here and the views are pretty similar to this guy I heard of.
He got so sick of MTV he started Music Television Sucks (MTS)
http://www.musictelevisionsucks.net
It's a community based music site, they have band videos - no adverts in between :), links to band websites, music news etc etc.
You guys might want to check it out
Of course with anything good I think the big record studios are getting down on them.
