I'd heard that this was a woman who somehow obtained the powers of the energy Superman. How was she able to do this, and what ended up happening to her?

I don't recall the exact details, but after Superman lost his electric powers, they suddenly became up for grabs. A cosmic being named Kismet sent the powers to a woman from Clark's childhood, named (I think) Sharon Ventura.
She went on to sacrifice her life against Imperiex in the "Our Worlds at War" crossover.

IIRC, Sharon was actually Kismet from the beginning. To escape Dominus, Waverider showed that Kismet became a little girl in Earth's past (she had the power to do that kinda thang) and grew up in Smallville alongside clark. Later, lightning struck Sharon's plane and she seemingly got powers as a metahuman, but really this was just part of her Kismet abilities coming back. She used Superman's old energy suit to keep herself stable, just as he'd needed it before. Superman had been able to change the design of that costume at will but for some reason rather than do that Sharon decided to stick with it and said that her "S" stood for Strange Visitor rather than Supergirl or Superwoman or something similar.
During OUR WORLDS AT WAR, Sharon and Superman went on a suicide run during which her full awareness as Kismet resurfaced and she shared these secrets with Superman just before her own sacrifice.

Yep. That's it. Kismet, a.k.a. Strange Visitor, imbued Superman with all of her powers, thus sacrificing herself.
