I spent the last week working 11 hour shifts at the paper, doing exclusively hurricane coverage. My vacation was supposed to start Wednesday...my boss finally forced me to leave Friday morning. I come home to SE Ohio to visit the folks a few days.
So tonight I'm at the bar and I see the news pop on at a bar and see Rehnquist died. What do I do? I rush home, hop online and help get stuff about it on my paper's site ASAP.
On vacation. On my parent's dialup connection. Mostly drunk.
What's wrong with me?

Are you required to do that on your vacation? Are you always "on call" whenever news breaks?
If not, you should just enjoy your vacation.

You're not a loser, you just really care about world/political issues and the world around you. It IS part of your life, so leaving it behind is somewhat difficult.

Loser? No.
I'd say dedicated.

I'll tell you what's wrong with you. You're extremely diligent, focused, and full of work ethic. And if those are wrong, you shouldn't wanna be right.

Loser? No. Interrupting your vacation for that just shows that you just care more about this country than the president of the United States does.
Which would be more impressive if it were a harder category to get into.

No, a loser would be a President who sits on his ass on vacation while a hurricane bears down on a major US population center, and does nothing tangible to prepare for said hurricane or the aftermath of same, then when called on it afterward, has his talking-head assholes say retarded things like "We wanted to wait and see how things went. We didn't have anything prepared because we didn't want to overreact."
What, they could have had too much water and food and transportation and medical help ready to come in the moment the storm ended? Yeah, that would have been so tragic.
You're good, pho. No loser. Just dedicated. And smart. And cute.

Everyone else covered most of my intial thoughts, so I'll ask:
Why did you do this?
On vacation. On my parent's dialup connection. Mostly drunk.
How's that different from most of the media? I thought that was SOP.
Yes, yes. It's a cheap shot, I know. I just couldn't resist.

Hey Pho,
It's gonna take a lot more than this story to make us think you are a loser.

Marriage isn't a hobby, it's a career.

Okay... so we have a lot of the typical, "You're dedicated" things, a Bush slam, and a really good cheap shot by Tom.
Now, the blunt truth - you work too damn hard. They have other people to do the job when you're on vacation. Heck, they have other people people who do the job when you're there doing it. It's like the "Dante" complex from "Clerks" - you probably think the paper will fall apart without you there. It won't.
So enjoy your vacation and stop worrying. Bush will do something stupid for the news when you get back.

Okay, I'm coming at this with a different perspective.
I think this shows you've lucked out, Pho. You're doing something for a living that you actually care about. You don't happily completely forget about it the minute it's the weekend or a vacation. That means it's an actual calling. People are much happier and more fulfilled with those than with just a job. And also in those cases, burnout is not necessarily a risk. Depends on your motivations for doing it. If you feel you have to put in the extra time, sure, problem. If it's because you want to, great! Think about artists, chefs, musicians, political aides, teachers, aid workers, etc. It's not a 40-hour/week thing. It's a life. And that's not a bad thing. Workaholic is not necessarily a bad thing. It can be to loved ones and such, so that's a complication, but enthusiasm is a nifty, rare, fortunate thing.

Actually it's grounds for committance to a mental hospital.
