I just finished The Man Who Laughs and thought it was great. I am new to comics, but seem to really like Ed Brubaker. I haven't seen this one discussed much on here and kind of wonder why. Does anyone have thoughts on this it they've read it? Just curious.

It was good stuff.
If you like Brubaker's work, I'd recommend his stuff on Sleeper, Authority: Revolution and especially Captain America.

Thanks. I just started Point Blank last night and look forward to the others. I plan on staring Captain America as well.

Just finished this myself last week.
I would put this in my new top 20 list for the best batman story arc's of all time now.
I love the way this picks up straight after matt wagner's dark moon rising stories.
The 3 part back up story collected in this edition was a pleasure to read as well.

Really the way Matt Wagner's "Dark Moon Rising" stories tie seamlessly in before this - TMWL came first! But yeah, there's a very nice flow from Year One to Dark Moon to Man Who Laughs.
While I personally prefer the Joker's first story from all the way back in Batman # 1 in the 40's, it needed to be retold for the modern continuity, without Robin, and Ed Brubaker and Doug Mahnke were just the guys to do it.

Brubaker would have the best man to write the new batman with dick grayson as batman.
damn it.

It came out in 2005. It's gotten very positive attention from fans.
Before TMWL, LOTDK 50 was the canon first encounter with The Joker. I didn't like LOTDK 50, it had Joker's cousin Melvin have all the chemical knowledge, and Joker simply steals Melvin's recipe.
Brubaker is one the best comic writers out there. If you interested in Dr Doom, I recommend Bru's faithful retelling of Doom's awesome origin in Books of Doom (tpb).

I have not read #50 yet, is it collected?

Batman:Dark Legends TPB (1996).
I don't know why you'd want to read it. It's not canon anymore, and not that good IMHO. But if you like Joker having no knowledge of chemicals, and stealing Joker venom from his autistic savant cousin Melvin, then go for it.

Had this in my hand earlier today, sooo close to buying it. I am new to comics myself, I bought the dark knight returns (weird place to start I know lol) and loved it read it in a day. I got the dark knight strikes back just cause its the sequel, and bought watchmen today. I was so close to getting this I am definitely going to get it later on this week, it looked really good.

^ Eh, get Gotham Central: Unresolved Targets instead. It's Joker and Ed Brubaker and about ten times better than TMWL.
I hope you like DKSA ha ha

Both are really good.
I loved Gothan central, My only quip is that some of the cops are so boring.

I was late reading that book and eventually picked it up along with the Killing Joke. Those two books work so great together.
I hope you are following him on Captain America.

They do flow well, they almost feel like it's one continuing series. But there is a continuity gaff that Ed made in TMWL. Year One's epilogue has the Joker's debut and threat to the water supply happening in December, with snow falling. TMWL appears to be in the midst of a summer heat wave.
I liked the Green Lanter story too, though I wish they'd included something a little more connected, either thematically or chronologically. At least Going Sane's backup was another Joker tale.

I'm a big Brubaker fan, but TMWL never really grabbed me. I've always liked the Joker, but having read the Joker's original appearance in Batman #1, I think that no one's really gotten him. The original Joker was a violent, genius, serial killer/thief who never laughed maniacally and appearance aside was not a clown. I would have liked to have seen that, not the cackling maniac in TMWL. And Manke's art was pretty scratchy in it as well. Eh.

just finished reading this and I loved it. writing, art, story, all awesome. love brubaker. In the past two days I've read the Killing Joke, Arkham Asylum, and TMWL all for the first time and TMWL was my favorite. TKJ was very good also, but I didn't really enjoy AA.

I read it recently and liked it a lot. It's been a while since I've been freaked out by a joker who isn't written by Grant Morrison.

I liked it well enough. I liked how gruesome it was. I'm a little sadistic, if I do say so myself. The first half of it, the first story, I thought was much better than the second one, even though that one wasn't necessarily bad. "Mommy's doll makes too much noise!" I loved that.
