Now, I just read the book, and I've seen what Cronenberg has written/said about his Cannes film. Apparently, he says that the movie is only a little like the book, and he even says he did not know the screenplay was based on the book. He says that fans of the book will probably not like the movie because they are so different.

I've seen the clips, and tho they are just that, let's say.....they're not so different from the book. What's the deal?

Is David intentionally trying to not make light of the fact that his movie was based on a graphic novel? Is he embarassed? He admits he did not really know about the movie, yet, the movie looks like the book. Is he afraid it will get less good reviews if people know this? I feel a pulling away... why is he acting this way? I wonder if the movie is a lot more like the book than he wants to admit.

It's possible, and I certainly agree that it looks the same in the trailer.

It's also possible that there's a change big enough that he felt the need to offer a warning. Or maybe he's just been warned about comic geeks picking stuff apart and just wanted to fire off a warning shot.

Who knows? The movie looks great. I'm totally looking forward to it.

I haven't seen the trailer, but he might be distancing himself from the "comic book movie" because he's afraid people will go in expecting Batman or Punisher or something. It's been a while since I've read the book, but the Paradox line had nothing at all to do with superhero stuff. It's fine to hype a movie as being made from a comic book if it does actually fall into what people would expect (namely, superheroes), but hyping the source material in this case probably wouldn't do the film any favors.
