This one is specifically for Grant, howyadoin, and leonaozaki, but everyone is invited to join in.

I want to level with you guys (no hostility, no snark, just honest discussion).

I often disagree with you three on a number of musical issues. There's nothing inherently wrong with that. Without disagreement, there'd be no discussion. We don't want to become a mass of same-thinking conformists. I hope we agree on that much.

That being said, I wonder why we never seem to agree on *anything* musical.

It seems that by sheer coincidence, we'd find ourselves in agreement at least once in a while in musical discussions. Looking back at the many discussions we've had, however, it seems that that *never* happens.

Why is this? Are we failing to communicate effectively somewhere?

Why is this? Are we failing to communicate effectively somewhere? I'd say it's because you have a very specific area of music that you're interested in, and you don't seem particularly interested in anything outside that genre. At least, that's the way it looks from my perspective.

That, and you don't always acknowledge points to the contrary when you have a theory in mind. Like when you were slagging alt-rock and grunge because to you they only ever expressed limited, negative emotions. You gave a list of other emotions that alt-rock should have also expressed, and I gave you back a song for every one of them. I don't recall you responding at all.

All that being said, we'll always have the Beatles.

Ditto. Buried Alien's never mentioned liking a band that I outright disliked outside of maybe Bob Seger. I just think you spend too much time overanalyzing why you don't certain music that's all.

Plus you take this stuff way too personally. I don't think you're an idiot or anything but like howy it's annoying when you don't acknowledge any counterpoints we make.

Make it short I like the Beatles I like the Stones but I'm not going sit around and complain that there's nothing else like them because there's plenty of other bands out there.

Actually, my liking of Seger is limited to one song: "Old Time Rock 'n Roll". I'm pretty indifferent to the rest of his catalogue and can't stand "Like a Rock" at all (maybe because of all those truck commercials).

Just to chime in... It's lucky that I don't post all that much because if you guys find yourself constantly disagreeing with Buried, I'm even more relatively closed minded about sixties and seventies music. Of course, you've got to wonder just how limited anyone can be if one likes most of the better stuff from that period because, damn, popular music was ridiculously diverse back then.

WARNING! MORE OR LESS RANDOM RANT COMING UP!

Incidentally, as far as Buried not liking the same genres of music as you other guys, I don't really see that as being true. Alt-rock and Indie-rock are in fact not musical genres (or even sub-genres) at all. Really, what seperates Alt or Indi from any other kind of rock and roll/pop aside for the fact that it's distribution and popularity is much smaller. Like I said, this is just a random rant but it really does puzzle me as to how anyone can actually call alternative a "genre".

Sorry to butt in to the thread but I just wanted to post this.

As for me, I love Bob Seger's music.

From my perspective, the root of my disagreements with Buried Alien and Ilash can be summed up like this:

I like the Beatles but I don't love them.

But that's cool. I'm sure I have equally strong opinions about Pixies, Joy Division, and/or the White Stripes that they don't share.

I like Seger for the most part, but I think 'Old Time Rock and Roll' was/is overplayed.

It was overplayed when it became a hit, but whenever I hear Seger on the radio now it's never OTRAR.

True, but not only was it overplayed. Tom Fuckin' Cruise ruined the song by prancing to it in his underwear in Risky Business.
