As I have just completed a ten day tour of British Columbia and Alberta, I am thinking of things Canadian while on the bus.

I actually got to see the Canadian Rockies and the land that Wolverine (lately of Avengers fame) and Heather and Mac Hudson were positioned in.
I can't see how anyone would expect to find DBCooper in those woods, let alone the Wendego or Sasquatch!

I drove past a comic book shop in Vancouver and another in Edmonton but had no chance to stop.

I was amused to find that the sound effect for Nightcrawler (BAMF) was a variation of the Alberta ski town Banff! How much I have wanted to come see what it was like after learning of it!

And, of course, former Xmen/Avengers scribe/artist/auteur John Byrne is Canadian, so I can't be too suprised by any of this. Does anyone know who came up with Nightcrawler's sound? Was it Dave Cockrum or Chris Claremont or JB?

Just curious, eh?

aw, spoil sport.
OK, madman, let's convert this to your question...
HAS there ever been another Canadian Avenger?
Major Mapleleaf?

No?
OK then... back to my original question.
Does anyone know who came up with Wolverine's buddy Kurt Wagner's sound effect? It's only a matter of time before he shows up in New Avengers if Wolverine is hanging out at Tony's Tower... (There! I tied it into Avenges!)

Yes, Canadian beer was available, but I didn't sample any. I was there in a Vancouver sports bar for dinner Monday night, while they played Monday night football from Seattle on their wide screens. But I don't drink.

I did sample some canadian maple candies...
What is a Tougues? A ski cap? No, it was 75 degrees, except on the glacier where it was 57 degrees and the water was 32.7 F or 0.02 C degrees!

I did learn that the figure on the top of Parlament bldg in Victoria was NOT Wolverine nor a sports figure... but the first prime minister. They are VERY proud of their history and heritage. I learned more about first nation people than I cared to... but never heard a single reference to Michael TwoYoungMan! Nor his daughter!

A touque is a touque. I don't think that there is a word in the American vernaqular that describes it. It's the thing you wear on your head so that you don't lose your ears in the winter
:D

As for Canadian Avengers connections, the only one is Wolverine really, but maybe some other characters could join, like Sasquatch or something. Yeah, Sasquatch as an Avenger, that would be awesome, awesome indeed.

Goodness.... which body would Sasquatch have? Male? Female? (Isn't he dead, yet?)

As for the touque.... pronouced "touk" if I recall my Great White North/SCTV episodes with Doug and Bob, we called them knit hats or ski caps when I was young in the 1960s... I've also heard them called tobogans... not to be confused with the sleding device for which they are required clothing! :D

Nope, he's still alive, he was in the newest Alpha Flight book, and Walt was a man again. I think the whole being a woman period is just being forgotten and Marvel chooses to ignore it (and why wouldn't they). Still he would make a great Avenger on the simple ground that saying Sasquatch is fun, try saying sasquatch and not smile, it's damn near impossible!

It's Doug and BOB MacKenzie!

LOL

Canada is a great place. I'm not a much of a drinkler either... but have sampled American beer which tasts more like water with a beer flavour... give Canadian beer a taste next time!

I think they should replace the statue of John A MacDonald (our first Prime Minister) with one of Wayne Gretzky.

The Canadian influence on rock music...

Rush
Neil Young
The Guess Who
Saga

(purposely omitting Bryan Adams, Celine Dion, and Glass Tiger ;) )

So tying tangentally into the Avengers... are there any comic book (Avengers characters specifically) references to say Rush or Neil Young? I know there is one in DC's Green Lantern a few years back, where Flash is describing Rush as 'math rock', and he likes them because when you're a speedster, 4/4 time is too boring (I am paraphrasing of course).

What about Bob & Doug (or SCTV) references? Don't tell me Spidey has never called Hydroman a "Hoser" or something along these lines. With the knowledgebase around here, I'm sure there are lots of CanEhdian references y'all can provide. Maybe there is a Captain Canada in The Ultimates?

Ya HAD to get me going...

POCKLINGTON SOLD WAYNE... Wayne did pick LA... but Pocklington wouldn't have sent him to a contender!

And whenever he's been called upon to play for Canada he has not said no... neither has he not helped in a managerial capacity whenever he's been asked. At the Salt Lake games he took one on the chin for Canada allowing the players to focus on the games while he took heat... and they won the Gold!

ONLY player to score 200 points... and he did it 4 times. Lead Edmonton to 4 Stanley Cups in 5 years... 9 Hart and 10 Art Ross Trophies... statistically the most dominant athlete in North American team sports. Whats not to like?

Saga I'm impressed that you remember Saga; hadn't realised they'd made any impression in the US, though I know they had a pretty good following in Europe in the early 80's.

Aldo Nova
Loverboy
Red Rider

...and Bob & Doug McKenzie (with Geddy Lee!) "Take Off, to the Great White North!"

Saga was pretty much a one hit wonder in the U.S. that I recall. I'm a bit of a prog rock guy, so even if I didn't listen to them (much like Marillion) I was aware of them because of their influence on some of the artists I do listen to. I am sure there are others I missed, but wanted to draw attention to some acts some us probably heard of yet never knew were Canadian.
I still wouldn't mind some posts regarding some Canadian Pop Culture references in Marvel Comics, some of you must be aware of some... I'm not crazy, there has got to be some good ones out there!

Anyway, I found some interesting sites...

http://www.collectionscanada.ca/superheroes/index-e.html

Captain Canuck! No way!

http://www.collectionscanada.ca/superheroes/t3-210.04-e.html

(There is a 'Saga' reference here, but I expect this one is purely coincidence!)

and one other site re: Canadian heroes...
http://www.internationalhero.co.uk/c/canada.htm

So for Marvel Candian superheroes we got Alpha Flight & Wolverine. Any others?

Beauty, eh?

Yes, the most memorable mention of Neal Young came in Avengers #93, when Antman made his journey into the body of the Vision to repair him during the story titled "Three Cows Shot Me Down". The three ants that Antman took with him, as I recall, were named Neal, Nash, and Crosby, or, said another way, that complete escaped me at the time.... Crosby, Stills and Nash...
Look it up and tell me if I am right.
There may have been an earlier mention of one or both of the ants that die in Avengers #93 to save Antman in, say, Avengers #51 or 52...The Man inside the Anthill, where Whirlwind attacks Jan and Hank, and drops Hank into the anthill... it's almost curtains for Hank, until he stumbles upon his cybernetic helmet and is able to call off the attacking ants. Don't know if he is able to call the ants by name then, but it seems like a long lost reunion, as I recall. I think both of these stories show up in Essential Avengers Volume #2 and #4... not to mention in the Kree Skrull War tbp "Three Cows Shot Me Down".
Check it out, will you???

I never got into the Avengers back when I was reading comics in my youth, but now that I am back reading again, I was considering picking up a volume of a classic storyline. The Kree-Skrull War was one of them, so at the very least, I will look it over the next time I am at my local store. Depending on the price, I may buy it as well. So yes, I will definitely check it out. Nice tip.

Oh Yeah, I found the Green Lantern reference I was talking about...

Green Lantern #170, by DC Comics, Dec. 2003
This is the first known instance of a simple Rush reference in a comic book (the Rush inspired Defenders #45 listed on the Rush Inspired Literature and Film page notwithstanding). This comic book opens with this conversation between the Green Lantern (who is reading a book) and the Flash:

Here is the image...
http://www.2112.net/powerwindows/references/GreenLanternComic170pg1.jpg

"Sep. 13, 2004. As the author of GREEN LANTERN #170, and a diehard Rush fan for the past 23 years, I was more than psyched to see that scene between GL & the Flash make your list of pop culture references! Thanks for including it! Stay tuned for more Rush references in the future...Great job on your website, by the way! Keep it up! Best, Ben Raab. www.benraab.com"

From this incedible Rush website! (http://www.2112.net/powerwindows/)

This page has the Defenders #45, as well as a few other comics with homages to Rush (including links to the entire comics!). Rush fans, do not pass this up! (http://www.cygnus-x1.net/)
and... The complete Defenders #45! (http://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/rush/comicbook-thedefenders.html)

Not Avengers related, I know but it does tie into the Canadian/Comic book connection of this thread...

and another tangent, Rush was inspired by SCTV! They used to play a video introduction for their song "The Weapon", featuring "Count Floyd" (Joe Flaherty) during a (I forget which) tour years ago. It was filmed specifically for this purpose, I have a audio bootleg of this and it is hilarious...(doesn't hurt to have him do a few wolf howls to get the crowd going with some of their own, either.

Now kinda back on subject, I have several of the old "Marvel Fun and Games" magazines (anyone remember these?), and this thread tripped something in the ol' grey matter. So I went through them, and in #4, on page 26-27, is "Captain Britain's Great Flag Mystery", where 9 other 'Captain's are pictured, in costumes inspired by their native county. The object, of course is to guess who they are. One of these is clearly 'Captain Canada'. In the instructions, it states that these gents (all male) are some of the members of the "World Federation of Superheroes" (I would post a picture if my scanner was working, but it is not right now). My questions are, did such a Federation exist elsewhere in Marvel books, or did they just make this up for this magazine? Was there actually a Marvel character "Captain Canada"?

(and for those wondering, the other 8 are Captain Cuba, Captain Turkey, Captain Sweden, Captain France, Captain Greece, Captain Japan, Captain Switzerland, and Captain Panama)

Thanks for the inspiration KirkG! ;)

Well, we had Nelvana the North Star, Captain Canuck, Super Shamu, Red Raven and Fleur De Lis. All these are/were published by indy publishers.

And as for DC, there is Dolphin, Centrix and Flying Fox

Oh and for Marvel, Sam Buchanan from the Darkhold Redeemers was Canadian, the original WWII Major Maple Leaf who was part of the Invaders and Sedna, Goddess of the sea. Ice Princess is Canadian. Oh, and Harpoon might be Canadian too, but he also might be Alaskan, I'm not sure.

Hi I'm back. I just realized that I forgot to mention some more Canadian heroes at Marvel: Deadpool, Silver Fox, Sabretooth, Daydreamer, Moonstalker

Oh, and someone asked if there had ever been a Canadian Avenger. Sure there was for a second! Marrina, though an alien, was actually born in Newfoundland, Canada, so she is technically Canadian, and she was an Avenger for two seconds!

Yes, good answer on Marina... she sure burned out fast though... poor little innocent mommie...

As for the question about Marvel ever having an International Federation of Superheroes or somesuch...no that I recall.... although the concept of the Uncanny X-men, circa issues 94 through at least 112 was to be an international group of mutants that came together to fly around in the Blackhawk (Blackwing) jet like the DC Blackhawks did...
Look at the composition of the original revised Xmen: Banishee, Irish.
Ororo, Storm: African
Nightcrawler: German/Danish
Colussus: Russian
Cyclops: Original Xmen American
Thunderbird: Native American
Wolverine: Canadian

I think that says it all.

Also, there were several jokes in letterspages and in Wolverine's mouth,a s I recall, about Issue #120-121 when Alpha Flight arrives (and probably near 109 also, for Guardian's appearance) of Major Mapleleaf or Captain Canada.
Don't think it was ever formalized.
Comments anyone??

Yeah I back country hike in the Rockies and it would be tough to find a creature like Wolvie. I also don't think the houses far into the praries like Wolvies in Origin were ever that nice looking in the late 1800s
