okay so I've read all five trades numerous times but just read them all today. so i realize this may sound stupid but who is Dr. M. that Toyota talks to on the phone and how did s/he know about Yorick and the monkey?
It could be Dr. Matsumori, Dr. Mann's mom, who, like her father was a scientist. But Dr Mann seems to have a thing against her father, not mom. How would mom have info on Yorick and the monkey. Maybe Congresswoman Brown sent in a call to Japan to get more than one geneticist a chance. By now, how many living people know of Yorick being alive. And could it be possible that there are other male monkeys alive in the jungles.?

Good questions, all of them. Of course, this being Y the Last Man, we're just going to have to wait a while for the answers. I personally think Dr M is Dr Mann's mom but hey, you never know where BKV is going to take this.

Here's my big prediction.
Dr. M is Dr. Mann's father. Somehow, he had something to do with creating the plague, and as a result, also the antidote to the plague, and therefore survived. Perhaps ampersand was one of his test subjects, and somehow ended up in the care of Yorick, so ampersand contains and can pass on the protection from the plague. Dr. Mann's father is alive somewhere and trying to reclaim Ampersand because he contains vital genetic information.
*shrugs*
Maybe?

My theory: We're meant to believe that Dr. M. is Dr. Mann's father, only to find out that it's actually her mother, playing Mind Games. She knows about Ampersand somehow, and hopes to use his genetic information in order to resuscitate an immobilized male Dr. M.

I would have to guess it's Dr. Mann's father. I mean there are lots of possible, explanations why he's alive. I mean if he happened to be in a very secured, sealed lab when the catastrophe happened. He should be alive. Just like the astronauts were, and how the astonauts child survived. By being in a completely contrained location. Perhaps Dr. Mann (sr) has been kept alive in such a facility. Desperately looking to escape his "bubble boy" life.

I was just rereading the second and third books and Allison mentions that her dad was very close to cloning himself, which is why she then tried to clone herself. Maybe his clone has something to do with... something.

I can't do better than these theories. But I did want to comment on the latest issue, where they are in Australia. Various women are talking about men with that reporter on page 1. On page 2, we see the submarine at the dock, and *wow* does it look incredibly phallic. Too funny.
I can't remember, but did they ever discuss whether a hermaphrodite would be infected?
Aaron King

Supposedly, it's every mammal with a Y chromosome. True hermaphrodites are people with one testicle and one ovary, but I think they can have either XX (female) or XY (male) chromosomes.

I just read the first trade today. Amazing stuff, Vertigo is fast becoming my favourite imprint.
Does anyone know what's happened to submarine crews?

An all-female submarine crew was shown in the recent "Girl on Girl" story arc, so we can assume that all men in submarines were affected as well.

Wouldn't a sub like that be nuclear powered? If so, then why would it need to refuel?

I wanted to get into this series for a while now and grabbed the chance when my lcs had a sale.....40% off with all DC back issues last thursday...........so I raided the Y-the last man box and have all issues now except for 1, 2, 3, 4, 13, 14, 27, 29, 34, 35, 36.......I'm happy, too bad the first 4 issues weren't there. I really want the original issues.....yeah, I'm that kinda guy, but maybe I'll go for the first trade, not sure yet.

I'm enjoying Y The Last Man quite a bit as well.
Does anyone know how many issues this is slated to last? Has Vaughan mentioned a length at all?
Not that I want it to end.

60 issues overall.

The crew isn't nuclear powered, so they would need to restock food periodically.

But they can survive for months at a time underwater though, without having to surface. And the thing is, it'd mean that all sub crews would be effected by such a thing. But I don't buy this, subs are sealed units with the water around them, I can't see how they could've been possibly effected.

They wouldn't have been effected by something airborn unless it had some kind of delayed effect that hit everyone at once. The thing is though it hit everyone in the world at the same time, which means the trigger must have been either mystical (which doesn't seem to fit the style of the comic) or radiation (which includes radio waves). They could easily have been affected by that in a submarine.

But there was all that about the Amulet of Helen (that right?), and about it leaving Jordan, which was a possible reason for the problems. But you're right, seems out of plot.
But with the radiowaves, if it was powerful enough to effect everyone at once, logical it should've been able to effect the Astronauts as well. Thinking about it, that doesn't make that much sense.

Could have been a virus with a lengthy period of dormancy. How long were the astronauts in space? But then how do we explain Yorick?

I'm talking submarine only. The crew was a given.

I doubt it was radio waves, but depending on the source of the radio waves they could still have missed the astronauts. If they came from a satelite, then it's entirely possible that the astronauts were on the safe side of the satelite

Just read Volume 6....
Still very good, but I thought it was the least best out of all the volumes....I say "least best" because it was still very good.....worth every penny still..but I dunno...I gues I got used to seeing the travelers on land all the time....it was a geat exploration to see how the water is being controlled and by whom.....the scene at the Sydney Theatre was horrible, but very understandable.......the last story about Beth was intriguing, but......thought she was going to get axed, but leaves a great cliffhanger.....guess it will be a few months until i read Y again, since im only reading the trades, but the payoff is fanfuckintastic.....

The Swedish built Collins class submarines are diesel/electric powered. I assume this is because of both cost and that Australia is almost entirely non-nuclear. I think they have one experimental reactor but no other operational nuclear sites. There are only four navies in the world with operational nuclear submarines, the US, UK, Russia and France and without exception they are used to carry city-busting SLBMs. Below is a link to the shipbuilders web site showing the HMAS Collins: http://www.kockums.se/News/photostock/photo.html

I never thought I would find something to fill the void Preacher left, and amazingly enough, along came Y.

Cost could be a factor, but it would take a lot for politicians to justify a nucleur sub.
We are non-nucleur, despite all the Uranium we have, and we don't start wars, so a nucleur sub would be a little extravagent.
And after all the troubles with the Collins Class subs, I don't think any politician is willing to by a sub again for a good long while.

The greatest finish? Hell, it had the greatest intro of any comic of the past year. Not since the end of Robin #57 (56? Can't remember) have I been so completely blown away by something that happened in a comic. Surprised BKV didn't save it for the end of an issue, but what an effective story.

I loved the beginning. I laughed for about 30 seconds because Vaughn put something so shocking and interesting at the start of the story.
And I predict that the 'rumors' of immaculate conceptions were neither rumors nor immaculate. Let the sausage-fest begin.

Is it bad that I like stewardess Beth more than Aussie Beth, and kinda hope she ends up with Yorick instead? I know it's not really a fair comparison, but she just seems so much more Yorick's type. Really curious to see where BKV is going with this.
EDIT: had a spoiler in there like a dumbass... sorry, sorry!

I don't know man, Brian's been dropping hints of a 355/Yorick hook-up since Marsville.
AND...
We're on issue 40, with trades of the back issues dropping like bird turds.

Excellent issue that didn't follow Yorick's main group. I love the way BKV changes pace and brings older characters back into play just before you start to miss them. Great issue and love the Hero subplot.
Nothing real constructive to add. Just wanted to say it's great to see this title has so many supporters. I've been grooving on this since I picked up the first four trades a couple years back. I am in love with the writing and am glad to see one creative team carry a run for so long.
Bendis & Bagley are on an 88-issue streak. Are there any other current team streaks longer than Y's 40-issue run?

Longer than Y? Azz and Risso on 100 Bullets is at 66 or something. Usagi Yojimbo's at 90 and Blade of the Immortal is at 109 but both of them are written and drawn by the same person.
