Detective comics would have two batman stories and a Jonn Jonzz story. Superman might have two superman tales and a aquaman.

Batman would have two batman stories and the third a green arrow!

and all for 12 cents.

When did multi stories end? 1984?

I think it would have been around the early 1980's. I remember the Green Arrow backup stories. They were a lot of fun.

Perhaps the DC Implosion of the late-70's had something to do with it. I don't really know for sure, but it may have been that DC decided to cut back on production costs, and reduced the page count of their titles.

Since NML, Detective Comics has had a backup story, though with rare exceptions the stories have been weak. Gotham Knights used to (and may still have) a black and white backup Batman story.

Legion of Superheroes some times have them.

I usually enjoy the ones in Detective Comics. But, I wish they had them in more comics..

I enjoyed the Batman Black & White stories, great stuff.

Also the back ups in LoSH are good, solid stuff. Loved the Karate Kid/Phantom Girl story. Tragic. :(

When I started reading DC comics, all of the Superman and Batman titles usually had three stories. Action Comics had Superman, Tommy Tomorrow and Congo Bill. Adventure Comics had Superboy, Aquaman and Green Arrow. Detective Comics had Batman, Roy Raymond TV Detective and John Jones Manhunter from Mars. Worlds Finest Comics had Superman/Batman, Tomahawk and Green Arrow.

I remember Flash having Dr. Fate and Firestorm backup's in the early 80's. Also, I think Detective had a Slam Bradley backup as recently as a few years ago.

I personally think that ACTION COMICS should bring back this type of format. The book, after all, finally went back to being "Action Comics" as opposed to "SUPERMAN in Action Comics." The stories should not star just one character.

Personally I would rather not have pages taken away from the main story.

I agree, but perhaps more pages could be added.

But then the price goes UP

Does Detective Comic have less pages? Or do they save money by printing it on newsprint instead of the glossy paper?

I'd be willing to sacrifice paper quality in order to get extra pages/stories in more of comics..

When I was last reading it (after NML), Detective Comics had a few more pages and a slightly higher cover price.

I used to love the extra-thick issues that had one or two new stories, and then three or four re-prints, and sometimes included extras like the Cockrum drawn the Lore of the Legion! I think the Legion could really use a couple of pages like that again. I feel like I've no idea who any of them are these days! :p

One thing I like about the silver age books are the back-up or multiple stories in DC. I was reading Hawkman 25 (S.A.)and they had a golden age backup story of Hawkman.

What was cool about it was that the golden age story had drinking, smoking, and sexual undertones to it, while the silver age story was much more tame as far as vices and sex goes.
