It looks clear to me that Steven shut down the thread once the ad hominem attacks began. This is consistent with his recent crackdown on this behavior.

WG's response that this was some kind of plot against him (letting him be attacked before closing the thread) does sound particularly overly sensitive. Funny that he saw it as Steven preventing him from counter-responding, instead of protecting him from further personal attacks.

I shut down the thread for three reasons:

Conversation had once again been reduced to "I'm great, you're scum" (on both sides) and anything resembling real information or informed argument had stopped being passed. (Sorry, Watson (now we can see if he's really gone or not), but "I'm right, I was always right and if I have to tell you why you're not worth my time" isn't an informed argument.)

I should have shut it down immediately since the current policy has been things discussed in the column should be discussed here, and things not discussed in the column should be discussed elsewhere. (I should have shut down the George Perez thread on the same grounds.) But I've been busy with other things and not paying as much attention as I should have.

Reading it bored me.

By the way, I'm shutting down this thread now as well. Sorry if anyone feels persecuted. And, Bart, I'll always be around to make you look like a moderate. (Besides, on many things, you are a moderate.)
