Just curious I noticed the post count was down about 800 messages when I logged on this evening.
Did some threads get deleted today?

Woah, yeah, I'm down over 1000 posts. I guess I get to dedicate another post to MST3000!
200 more and I'd have been able to dedicate another one to Atari.

Holy crap! This morning when I logged on, I'd lost about 5000 posts!
Major pruning of the old threads overnight, it appears.

Yeah Jeffrey, you lost threads and moved way up on the overall list to #4 though.
I lost 8,000 posts this time around.
I guess this is called "The Great Thread Pruning Massacre of 2005."

My only comment would be that it would be great if we could get some advance notice (say 48 hours) of what threads were being removed, so that we could go in and save some stuff to our individuals computers if need be.
Let's say there's a thread with a list of movie recommendations I'd like to keep. That way, I could make sure I get what I need from it before it's deleted.
Would that be a possibility in the future?
What criteria is used when deciding what to delete?
I don't mean to be a pain in the pants, so thanks in advance

The CBR Forum staff has been pruning old threads and threads with large amount of replies to help make the server run smoother.

Right now we are only deleteing threads that have a lot of replies.
Most of the time large reply threads are locked by a mod and left for a couple days so people can save info from the thread.

I lost over half my posts and dropped from the #10 spot to the twenties. You know how many people with high post counts I had to outlast to get that spot?
Oh well. Not that I really deserved anyway.

I don't mean to be a pain in the pants, so thanks in advanceBasically, if there's something you'd like to keep, you should save it to your computer immediately. We can't give advance warning of prunings, sorry. We'll probably be culling posts more this coming week as well, so keep that in mind.

Not that I want you to, but if you delete messages in my TV on DVD Update thread on the TV/Film board, could you leave the thread up at least?

I realize this may be more the mod's doing than yours, but... why does the Off Topic Soap Opera thread on the Rumbles board periodically have posts deleted from it, yet threads of similar length such as Rita's or X-Cresence have none?
Because SO is the busiest (most posts, most accessed) of the various 'chat threads' and thus volunteers itself to be the primary lab rat in regards to my testing of server resources.
It should be noted, however, that I have pruned not only SO but also Ritas and X-Cres to various degrees at various times.

Is there any thought being given into simply getting rid of the post counters? Would that even be possible for vBulletin?
Post counters can easily be disabled but will not, in the least, help solve any sort of problem I am currently looking into.
To put it another way; Think about it like a book. It doesn't matter if the book has page numbers in it or not, because there is still the same number of pages there anyhow.

It may keep some folks from making post count into a competition, though - discouraging them from making a lot of nonsense to get ahead.

While there may be some who view it as a competition, I just looked up the current top 10 posters and at least 5 of them are just very active posters with a crapload of things to say.
