Actually, I’m afraid “Magnetic North” is going to be my last arc on the book for the foreseeable future. I had always planned for this to be my big finale, but when Singer’s run got pushed back a few months, Marvel was nice enough to ask me to stay onboard. Still, after much consideration, I decided that I’d rather go out with a bang than potentially overstay my welcome.
Thankfully, the Ultimate office has hired a much better writer to take my place, someone who I’ve been dying to see write the X-Men for a while now. It’s not my place to say who it, but I can say that he/she will unquestionable kick ass, and will most likely continue to plant more seeds for Bryan Singer’s upcoming story.
So, who do you guys think Marvel got for Ultimate X-Men. As the first issue is less than four months away, I sincerely doubt that reader response is going to change anything, but who would you guys like to writing the book.
Possibilities....
Warren Ellis- Marvel's new go to guy with Ultimate Marvel, and he's done the Ultimate X-Men before in Ultimate Nightmare, and he did a twelve issue filler run of Ultimate Fantastic Four. However I'm not sure he'd be that good (I loved the Ultimate Negative Zone arc, enjoyed Ultimate Nightmare, and thought I paid too much for the Ultimate Doom & Ultimate Secret stories.
Peter David- He may want a fourth high-profile project from Marvel, and would be the most experienced writer to ever work on the books. He's written the X-Men before in X-Factor, and a few guest-appearances, and he's written teenagers often in books like Young Justice, Spyboy, and more.
Jeph Loeb- Popular writer becomes Marvel exclusive. This could be the first of several high profile projects for the man.
Brian Michael Bendis- Maybe he has some leftover ideas from his previous run, although to be honest it doesn't rank with his best work. He can use Spider-Man's girlfriend, and introduce threads of the Ultimate Conspiracy plot.
Mark Millar- See above. He could deal with the ramifications of events in Ultimates 2 on the Ultimates if he so desires.
Brian Michael Bendis/ Mark Millar- Maybe they want to coscript a story again like they did with the first Ultimate F4 arc.
David Mack- He was supposed to follow Bendis on the book, and may have a new opportunity now.
Sean McKeever- Writes teenage heroes well in Sentinel, Gravity, and Mary Jane. This may be his big break.
Allan Heinberg- Popular new writer of popular book about teen heroes. He'd be perfect.
Mike Carey- He's written a well-received "filler" arc of Ultimate Fantastic Four, and Ultimate Elektra, along with his intensely loved run of Lucifer, so this could be a big break for him.
I'm sure I could list more big (or soon to be big) names if I wanted (Priest, Dan Slott, Robert Kirkman, Ed Brubaker, Greg Pak, crap, there's a lot.) Right now, I'd say the one I'd love the most on the book would be Peter David, although I'm sure all the other creators could impress me. What do you guys think?
One last thing I wouldn't mind if Marvel were to do: Release the Ultimate Hulk VS. Wolverine mini-series as an Ultimate X-Men arc. It would help keep the book, and characters from being overexposed.
