The fact that ASH was going to be playing the Master has been speculated on for a few months now over at the Outpost Gallifrey forums. I'm not sure how morphing from Ainley's Master to the ASH meshes with RD's desire to keep the series as free from dependance on the original series' continuity while still using elements from the original series.*
And by the way, The Master was played by Eric ROBERTS in the TV movie. Eric Saward was a script editor on the show during Peter Davidson's tenure, and, IIRC, was the writer of "Earthshock", killing off Adric to the cheers of millions.
*IE- THe Daleks can show up, but no one has to stand there and recap the last five Daleks stories, explain Davros and that whole Hand Of Omega destroying Skaro thing...
