It was 1:34 in the ayem and I'd been working on my comics proposal since I got home at five. I needed a little break, and with the HB film playing behind me, I was inspired to draw this little fifteen minute ditty. I haven't used a brush and markers in a very, very long time...and it shows. Jeff Smith with a brush I am not...:p

Oh well. It is what is and I'd figured I'd share anyways.

I'll try to do a little better next time...

Thanks for the kind words!

I get that all the time, Jakob, haha! I'll post on some boards and I'll get "Are you THE J. Scott?" Maybe I should just go by "Scott" or at least add my last name :D ...I can see all these folks going, "Oooo-a Campbell Hellboy?! I gotta check it out!

And then seeing it's not... :o

More doodling...just to warm up before getting to work. Watching the BoSox game this morning, a thought of young Hellboy playing some ball popped into my head and inspired this quickie. Man, 1940's baseball mitts are a pain to draw.

Just imagine what kind of slider you could throw with the Right Hand of Doom... :D

J. Scott, your drawing are both great but I really like the baseball drawing. Now that you've posted these images can we see more of your work? It doesn't even have to be Hellboy related (But more HB would be awesome). More please. :)

Folks...you are much too kind! :D I certainly appreciate it, very much. It boosts the confidence and I need it. When I'm throwing my desk about the room, my wife always yells at me about my lack of it. :o

Here's a little ditty from an OGN I'm working on, part of a proposal I sending to an editor. I hope Lady J. doesn't get too mad at me for straying from the Hellboy path...

Thanks again!

Wow, great stuff. As already mentioned a dozen times the baseball Hellboy kicks ass! I love how you didn't even add a little bit of color to the uniform, the only color in it is the red from Hellboy (and a little bit of yellow in the eyes). Great sketch for your original graphic novel too. They're all great but I love the baseball drawing. 'Tries' Hellboy isn't a suitable name for this art thread after seeing what you do. Keep 'em coming! :)

Thanks, Cosmos...here's a character that I came up with a couple years back when I wrote a little treatment for a young Hellboy story I was going to pitch. The story became my own thing (that OGN I mentioned before) and this character's still in it. Hope you dig.

Now, I think I actually want to go do Hell-Opus and The Right Flipper of Doom. Now that could be a ton of fun!... :p

Yeah, Kid C...through a whacky series of events, an editor at a publisher we all know and love requested a proposal for the story after seeing a few character designs and notes. I'm hoping to meet the editor in Boston, but at the very least should have a propsal to send to her by month's end. I should have had it to her already, but life's b.s. has gotten in the way.

I can't wait to see my stuff in print either, Stygian! :D Hopefully that'll happen one day, tis all I've ever truly wanted. And as of right now, the pencils would digitally colored. Love to see your take on a Western. I think your style would really work in that genre.

Man, have you been peeking in through my studio window?!

I'm actually working on two Western-inspired projects/proposals (along with the 'Spaulding Brown'/monsters tale). One's a straight up homage/loveletter to the Sergio Leone westerns (the best), and the other is this crazy spaghetti western/fantasy epic that I've been working on for the better part of twelve years, sort of like 'Sergio Leone-Meets-Terry Gilliam. I just want to finish it up so I can go read King's "Dark Tower" series (stayed away from those books-read the first two- just so I wouldn't be influenced by 'em).

Actually, here's a couple images from that 'Leone-Gilliam thing' (which is actually called "Once Upon A Time In The Wildlands"), a colored up character image, and a warm-up doodle/panel thumbnail type thingie of one of the main characters:

And now, Beezley Bubblegut's little brother, Berkely (yes, cheesily named after two of my early heroes, Simon Bisley and Berkely Breathed), part of a huge family of monsters from my tale. A quick little ditty that made me laugh...now I feel like doodlin' 'some Lobster Johnson...

Hi Folks,
Just wanted to share some stuff from my sketchbook. You folks had some nice words and invaluable crits the last time I tried this, so I figured what the heck.
This is a villain from one of my in-progress book proposals. A pumpkin-headed monster assassin, a foil for the young derring-do-gooder in my story. And I swear Jack Skellington wasn't in mind when I noodled this. I was actually thinking of the Child Catcher from Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang, if that makes any sense. Well, this thing is a child catcher in my tale...
Anyway, I hope you dig...thanks for cheking it out!:D

good to see your work again J.Scott!!!!!

I remember some of the artwork for this project a few years ago...(a tortise comes to mind...) If you get a cchance, I'm sure we'd all like to see them again. How is the project coming along?

jscott
08-08-2006, 08:19 AM
Thank you very much, Ruta & Petersen!

Petersen...yes this project has been in the works for quite a bit sad to say. Some people would say that getting a request to pitch a story to an editor from a company we all hold in our hearts is an amazing thing. While it certainly is, it was also a horrific thing: I froze. I got so wrapped up in making this pitch perfect, that my mind just went loopy. It's been a tale set in the 1940's...then an homage to the '80's (the era I grew up in)...wait-okay how about a retro space adventure(the version that gave birth to the turtle character) instead of the prevelant, fantasy all ages thing, try something different...how about a pre-pubescent "Brazil"...and on and on...

Thing was, the original pitch was a series of adventures with my kid hero and his childhood with bullies and first love and fighting monsters and robots and all these tall tales. It was episodic instead of plot-driven. A few friends of mine in the biz talked me out of that, saying it would never fly. Sadly, I listened and the mind loop that I mentioned started. After a year of torturing myself, I've said the hell with it and gotten back to what I loved about the story in the first place. And now I hope to have this proposal up and away by month's end, along with a second that I've just finished putting together.

Sorry about the rambling. Been a tough week.

And by the way: thank you for Mouseguard...:D

morna

Sounds like your first instinct is the best route! There is something to be said for going solely on a gut feeling or desire...it has the most passion and soul.

I am anxious to see any work you share. I loved the stuff you posted before, the cardboard drawing of Spaulding is gorgeous! ever think of doing the book on corrugated?

Thanks, morna! And I have played around with coorugated, Sir Petersen, but I don't my skills up to snuff yet, to really grasp tackling that stuff I'll get there one day.
While going through my loads of prelim and layout stuff to scan, I found these little blasts from the past. I was thrilled and shocked when a couple of fellow Hellboarders actually requested the originals. I was very happy to honor those requests...:D

And I swear Jack Skellington wasn't in mind when I noodled this.
I was thinkin' Jack Pumpkinhead of Oz (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Pumpkinhead_of_Oz) (by L. Frank Baum), although he’s a good guy. But the pumpkin-headed man is a longstanding archetype, from Irving's Headless Horseman to Sandman's Mervyn Pumpkinhead.

"…many a fine gentleman has a pumpkin head, as well as my scarecrow." - Nathaniel Hawthorne, “Feathertop” (http://www.classicreader.com/read.php/sid.6/bookid.284/
)

You have a lovely style, and the addition of twisty horns keeps him fresh mmm fresh pumpkin...pumpkin pie mmm Keep up the good work!

And hey from the sounds of it maybe we should get a ice cream eating club started up!:D

Sounds good, jackups. Now I think we'll need some boundaries for our new club...
The First Rule of Ice Cream Speed-Eating Club: you do not talk about the Ice Cream Speed-Eating Club.
Second Rule of Ice Cream Speed-Eating Club: you do NOT talk about the Ice Cream Speed Eating Club...:D

Mrc1214 & Sparky: Thank you kindly...and Sparky: I had forgotten about the Baum character, which I would've though impossible since I adored those books as a child. Those tales were extremely influential to me growing up.

Tom: Hello, sir, and thanks! About sequentials: I do have a handful for the two proposals mentioned, but unfortuantely unscanned. I draw rather large (17x24 double pagers) and only have a legal sized scanner. I am absolutely inept at piecing scans together. All this means I'll be heading to Staples this weekend to get them scanned and sent to my colorist-the man's going to have a heart attack! I'll have scans of sequentials by next week if that's okay. I'll no doubt be sharing a couple here to get some feedback ( pages scare the hell outta me, ) and over at new blog I'll be setting up.

And now, a goofy little sketch...stupid but fun, and the little wings is a definite rip on a certain Mr. Mignola design element-I love it when he does those:

Sure thing, Tom! By the way, I see that you're from Mass-where abouts? I grew up in Gloucester , or Gloucester-By-Manchester-By-The-Sea, as I like to jest...

Jankenstein...I drew that little piece on a piece of cardboard, whch I believed housed a 42" Vizio plasma so Vizio Art Board I guess.;)

And the two clubs do go hand in hand, the latter being the get together where we all lay about with distended stomachs, ice cream smeared across chins and clothing, moaning, "I can't believe I ate the whole thing", while our sinuses feel like they've been filled with the icy gasses of polar bear farts...

It's always nice to see an artist with a Vizio-n.

And why waste perfectly good ice cream by leaving it on your chin and clothing? :D

Ding-ding-ding!
There's an underworld speakeasy in 'Daring-Do' where Gibbly tickles the invory. Films like Casablanca and all those great gangster & noir films of the 30's and 40's inspired a tremendous portion of the story/stories.

Tom: Ah, I know Lynn quite well. "Lynn, Lynn the city of sin-you never come out the way you went in"...:D

Here's a little character study from my second proposal, a fantasy spaghetti western epic thing YEARS in the making. A "mad scientist" type I guess you could say. That thing sticking out his mouth is a pipe for smoking...magic.

I was just trying to have fun with white pencil. Still a hack with this type style (Struzan I ain't!), but what the hell, right? And yup-I'm ripping on the Mignola tiny wing thing-I make no apologies, even though I'd have a thousand thank-you's for the man! Wing-thing serves a purpose (or plot point) in the story though...hope you dig.

A little fun, pulling a Paul Pope and drawing myself as a lead character, what i somewhat looked like when I was 11. I had to wear that damn uniform for 8 years.

The kid's convinced his teacher, a nun (it is private school after all), is part of a secret holy league of assassins that has existed for centuries, hence the little line that appears in the story.

Maybe you'll dig this one...:o

David...yeah, Bone is amazing. Eve though I find the first half of the complete epic much stronger, both in art and story development, the tale is still groundbreaking in so many ways. Besides Mr. Mignola and Bill Watterson, Jeff Smith is a HUGE nfluence.

And Tad, believe me, since our conversation, I've been chugging! I won't let you down, sir!;)

After re-reading The Hobbit recently, I thought it might be fun to play with some of the characters. That led to doing some layouts based on the comics adaption that was published waaaaaaay back in '88, 89 (I think). Tackled the "goblin cave scene", thumbnailing six double-page spreads with stick figures and the such.

Now I needed to design the characters, how I see them, trying not to be derivative. Here are a couple early takes:

Hehe, thanks G & P! Yeah, she liked it. Now she wants me to do the entire workbook for her! I'm always drawing for her and she returns the favor, which is the best part! I always loved it when when my dear old Pops would draw Superman and Elvis (!) for me when I was my daughter's age. And now I get to get her all jones-up by drawing silly little pigs and Jack Skellington for her...

Well, here's a little morning thingamabob. I've never been high on inking (just not confident), but I do like sketching with pen. Just letting the energy fly, then adding some pencils afterward. Lousy scan, but oh well...
