The only music I can remember offhand from Star Trek 2 is Amazing Grace, but I don't think that's what you're talking about.

Yea I always noticed a similiarity. Especially in the action sequences. It has that "clang...clang" sound effect in background too...

its not just a similarity.

The "space battle" song from STII is everywhere in Aliens.

Geez, really? I need to watch those flicks again...can't get this image of Kirk and Ridley side-by-side out of my mind.

Good ear.
They are very similar, because they were both composed by James Horner during the early eighties.

If you listen to other stuff Horner did around that time, you'll hear similar themes. In Krull and Something Wicked this Way Comes, for instance.
